In this video, we discuss 3 reasons pigeons can make great pets for the right person. This is in no way a complete list, just a few things worth highlighting. I’ll make more videos about pigeons as pets in the future, and if there’s anything thing you love about pigeons as pets, I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

I think we need Tallulah's antics and habits to get an idea of what daily life with a pigeon is like. A Day In The Life Of Tallulah.

Watched several of your videos. They are sooo good. Im fostering a white dove. Doing everything ok but after 8th day made the mistake of taking him out which stressed him. Your video #1 of 3 was a great one so I stepped back and stopped handling him. Now for 3 days theres feathers everywhere. Not sure if its stress or molting. Watched the behaviour video and he seems relaxed. Coos at me. Eating. Lays and rests, tucks in his head. How do I tell if its stress (hes pulling out feathers) or moulting (shakes body and some fall out). Worried I set him way back.

I’m happy to hear you’ve found the videos helpful. While I’m only guessing since I don’t know your bird, I’d wager it’s simply moulting. It’s that time of year. My house looks like the battleground of a pillow fight thanks to Tallulah these days. Plucking isn’t typically an issue with doves. Keep your eye out for pin feathers, as confirmation of moulting. It sounds like your doing a great job taking it slow with him, keep up the good work!

All of these reasons sound awesome! Only thing I'm anxious about is my availability once I'm able to work in office more when covid gets more resolved (whenever that is). I'm sure I could work something out with my job to work mornings or evenings in office and then work at home the other half, is that a solution? Is being gone for roughly 4 hours too much?
@animalpeople880
@animalpeople880 2 жыл бұрын
You’d want to make sure they had a big space either way. If you had a mated pair they would be totally fine just being the two of them for four hours a day. In my opinion, if it was one, while it wouldn’t be ideal, it would likely work ok, especially if you scheduled it so you were gone at nap time (they really like there afternoon naps), with lots of foraging enrichment and toys for when they wake up. In the wild, one will stay home with the nest while the other goes and forages until they come back and swap, so as long as your not gone to long it should be similar to what they are instinctively used to/expecting. Even when your home all day they periodically want to go off and have some alone time.

@@animalpeople880 Thanks so much for the reply!! I still gotta finish up my personal learning before I'm 100% cozy and confident, but this means a lot I really appreciate it! I imagine by big space you mean more like a room and not just a large cage right?

@@SourSourSour my pleasure. That’s the best possible why of going about it! Good job for doing your research! A room, very big cage or indoor aviary would all work.

If you are going to put the pigeon in a secured aviary, that may work.... if you only have 1 pigeon, 1 big aviary would be good enough. :) good luck

Just put pants on my new pet Pigeon. He spent the whole time trying to pull them off. How long does it take to get them to accept them? Thanks
@animalpeople880

It depends on the bird and the method used to have the get used to it. With Tallulah I put it on, set her down on the rug so she’d have good grip, after a minute or two she calmed down, I gave her a treat, took it off, and gave her more treats. I left it on for a bit longer each time and after a day or two she didn’t care. Something to keep in mind is it’s not just the pants, it’s the design, fit, and brand. I’ve tried three brands with Tallulah and one she hates and picks at none stop, another she finds very comfortable and ignores, but it doesn’t fit her right around to vent so it holds the poop to close and gets her feathers dirty. So I tried making my own the was a cross between the two, and it kind of worked, it keeps her vent clean, but she doesn’t find it super comfortable, so I’m trying yet another brand. What I’m trying to say is that sometimes it’s not just the fact that they’re wearing pants that’s the problem, sometimes the problem is the specific pants.

@@animalpeople880 Please could you just answer one last question for us? We have had the pants on him a few hours a day. He spends the whole time preening and trying to pull it off. Also, he has gone into a sulk and won't step up on our hand like he was doing. He acts scared when we come near him, should we persist. He seems very strong-willed.

@@juliebarks3195 Some people I know have birds that took quite a while to get used to them, so I don’t think its necessarily not going to work. I recommend working on something whenever he’s in it to keep him distracted. I had the goal to be able to take Tallulah on walks in her harness. So when she wore it we would work on that. Her balance was bad so we would practice walking around the house with her on my hand and teaching her not to jump off, then we added the leash, got used to that and repeated the process on the deck, then in the yard, then around the block, then down the road (you get the idea). I was also getting her used to wearing it during cuddle sessions. So she was only ever in it when training to go on walks or getting used to cuddles while wearing it. That helped keep her focus off it while she got used to it. It may be worth finding a project you could work on with him to keep him similarly distracted for the time being. He may grow to not care at all, or he may be a bird that does better with harness used in particular circumstances (such as on walks, while getting carried, on the shoulder, or when in that one room with carpet) instead of just randomly wearing it while lounging in the living room. But that better gauged after he’s gotten used to it in at least some situations.
