I disagree with the statement about parents keeping their kids out of situations they don't know how to handle. You can't shelter a child forever. A better statement is parents should be there for their kids and be prepared to guide them through situations they don't know how to handle

This is a good segment & not just for teens. I’m 34 & my father has been in prison since I was a baby. He’s very emotionally abusive towards me. I’ve never had a relationship w a guy last longer than a season. It really hurts because I so badly want to get married & have a family but I scare every guy away. I don’t even know what a good relationship looks like.

This video really hit close to home. I’ve never had a father in my life. I don’t even know his name. And it just hurts. It hurts knowing that he never wanted to be in my life, he never even tried to search for me years later. He never made me feel like a princess. It hurts how much mistakes I’ve made in the past seeking validation from these dumb boys. And after all the things he’s done wrong to me, I hate how much I still want him in my life. It’s been 8 years and not even once he sent me a birthday card, asked how I was doing or anything. He doesn’t even care.

My father was never in the picture, I was forced into an adult role at the age of 10, and I was forced to take the role of the "golden child"... I'm 24 years old now and realized that I'm always tense, I fall for any guy who flirts with me, which after a lot of reflection I came to realize that it's the validation that I seek... I have trust issues, and I've never taken care of myself because I've always been too busy fixing other people's problems, etc. PARENTS: Don't lean on your children for emotional support, don't expect perfection from them, and make your children feel special not based on what they've accomplished, but for who they are... Trust me, it will save them from a lot of psychological problems

You need experience tho. Sooner or later you ll experience a break up anyway. Imagine being in college, or later in life, not knowing how to deal with a break up. The person you ve been with probably has been through a lot of break ups, so he wont seem that affected after the break up, but for you it will be way harder. Yeah, it brings your self esteem down at that moment, but later you ll become stronger and more mature because of that.

I feel this on a personal level. I’ve never had a real relationship with my father, which has lead me to be very vulnerable when it comes to guys and has left me with low self-esteem. It also makes sense as to why I’m only attracted to men my fathers age. Everyone here who has a good relationship with their father, be thankful. It really is important in a girls life😣😔

Tara O' Connell I don’t know know exactly how to help, but I can say that hopefully she does have a male in her life who can be a father figure/positive male role model to her, wether that be a grandfather, uncle, friend, boyfriend, etc. When I was younger, my mom had a boyfriend who was my father figure. He showed me how I should be treated by a man and he taught me many things that my father never had an interest in taking his time to teach me. He gave me unconditional love and affection and spent time with me as much as he could and I can tell you that was an amazing time for me those years I got to have him. I will always keep those memories close to my heart and I will always remember the things he’s taught me and how he treated me. Unlike myself, I hope your daughter can have a man/men like that throughout her whole life. Unfortunately for me, I was abandoned yet again...but adults break up and that’s life. Good luck to you and your daughter.

Lots of love to you girl. I didn't have one with my father and I never realized how much it impacted me as an adult now until I went to therapy. I chose my kid's father who ended up to be like my own father. I made that mistake and my kids suffered from it.

identifying that is progress on it's own though, you'd be surprised how many people go through life pretending things are perfect when they aren't. the first step is always admitting your reality, the ability to look in the mirror as honestly as you can without ego and all shish, to understand your insufficiencies, is the first step to growing and overcoming those odds and becoming the person you deep-down know you're meant to be. and finding contentment in the things you can't control. we dont get to pick our parents, but we can certainly choose the way we react to things/these circumstances/etc. you're smart! (:

@@nu-agegamer3548 yes. It’s sad to hear how low she thinks of herself. Someone also has to teach her what’s right and wrong in a relationship when she’s ready for one. Controlling behaviour and major jealousy are abusive qualities. I’m not dissing her, I’m just saying she is confused partly due to her self-esteem issues and I think the other part of the problem there is that because her father isn’t in the picture and didn’t make her feel good about herself, she also didn’t have an example of a healthy and good relationship set to her by her parents in order to prepare her for one.

Just remember your past doesn't define your future. It may not be your fault, but you need to hold yourself accountable for your actions moving forward. Once you enter dating and you become destructive, insecure, and unwilling to open up, that would be your fault. Healing takes responsibility and effort. It takes a long time, maybe even a lifetime, to heal but it is worth it when you see yourself improving. I hope things work out for you!
