It's so real, isn't it??? I think part of it is just wanting to push ourselves to meet our highest potential, but it always runs the risk of going too far. My mentor used to tell me that there are three tiers for a painting: commercially acceptable, good, and great. You always want to aim for great, but sometimes it's okay to have a painting that's commercially acceptable, which means someone will like it enough to buy it.
