Daric, I can't thank you enough for this video. I'm on a budget and found Yamaha bass guitar in a pawn shop for $100. I took a risk and bought it this afternoon, even though it had a buzzing D string. After you mentioned the truss rod, I looked into it and gradually tightened the hex bolt by half a turn. Well, that simple act fixed it beautifully. My bass guitar now sounds like new and I can get back into learning bass. Thank you very much.

Great tips! I agree with liking a little buzz. I have a medium-light touch and I like my action low with the neck dead flat. Mostly I hear it acoustically and through the amp it’s barely audible. The notes don’t fall flat, which is good 😂
@nomoremarxistbs74105 жыл бұрын
Mine sometimes buzzes just on certain notes. The A and D string in higher blues scale. The E string at the 3rd fret only. Might just need to barely file a couple of frets, most of the neck sounds superb. Was a ton worse until I messed with action and truss rod, almost perfect now though.

I bought a brand new bass for the first time in my life. It appeared that no matter what I was doing I had that buzz. Before you adjust anything, try out a new string or a different brand. It turns out that one of the stock strings to my brand new bass was faulty. I know that because I tried that same string on another bass, and it did the same fret buzz thing. I was so relieved when I found out THAT was the issue. I have never ran into a faulty string in all my years of playing. These other techniques are legit. Thanks for the advice!

One more I've come across concerns finger picking technique -- instead of picking/pulling the string parallel to the neck, I've seen people who pull the string"upwards/away" from the neck. When you let the string go, it snaps back down and hits a fret... I was actually having the opposite problem whereas I was pulling the string slightly "downward/toward" the neck. When I let go of the string, it had enough vibrational force that went back up and still snapped back and buzzed on a fret... Essentially the same issue but not as loud of a buzz.

got a used bass this week, felt it was time to learn the basics at least. frets buzz along the whole length, varies by string, no matter how hard i press, i'm guessing saddle height. someone had been fiddling with the bridge already, got the e and a saddles swapped, the a buzzed heavy, the e not much, swapped em, now it's everywhere like it should be for an easy fix. intonation on the other hand, if i didn't have a tuner i'd never get it right, i got bad ears for pitch.

Having come to bass from playing guitar, I find I get fret buzz from my habit of muting strings by lifting my fretting hand/fingers just off the frets to mute the strings. I don't get that buzz on a guitar, but definitely do with the larger strings on bass. Seems like muting a ringing string by lifting off the fret is just a bad idea on bass. Would you agree?

I'm fairly new to bass playing and i have a good american made GL L2000 - and i notice the buzz the most when im digital recording direct. if i reduce my finger plucking to absolute minimal energy, i dont get the buzzy artifacts, but as soon as i start playing aggresively, its there. the action seems very low. neck seems good, theres some bow. im definitely fretting hard enough as i played guitar for many years before bass, its not that. cant decide if im "overplaying" (plucking to hard), or the action is too low?

I just started playing since Covid and I’m having more fret buzz with my brand new bass as opposed to the older one. Both Squiers. Does a new bass have to be broken in?
@mplsmark2224 жыл бұрын
Nate Stain No, instruments don’t need to be broken in. However, they do need to be setup. Most instruments that are for sale in most shops need setup work. If new, they will probably have a high nut and poorly adjusted bridge. If vintage, they may have worn frets, twisted neck ect. A very common issue is high frets, this is remedied by a fret dress, of if lucky sometimes one or two can be addressed without the whole fretboard needing attention. You can go into Guitar center, pickup a $5000 bass and chances are it could use some setup work. This is not always sloppy manufacturing, there are differences in playing style, so the factory may leave the action high, so the buyer can have it setup to their liking. My advice is no matter how much the instrument costs, have a luthier give it a once over. Some people will not spend a $100 for setup work on a 200 instrument, I understand it may seem illogical. But, having a instrument setup well can make the difference between progress and just giving up playing, it happens all the time.

I have so much clacking on my bass. It's insane. It used to have this 3 way eq toggle that broke off and I think it got stuck on the high frequency setting. Everything comes through the amp: every little thump, pop, slight touch of the fret, nail touching the string. It constantly clacks. I can't think of what else could be the problem, and although this isn't my primary instrument, I've played this bass a lot over the last 20 years and I'm pretty sure my technique is at least OK. This is a decent bass ( Ibanez BTB) so the quality of the instrument should't be an issue. Could pick up height make a difference?
@nicholasbstone3 жыл бұрын
It's probably your action and your technique. Not saying you've got bad technique, but there are many different techniques to bass playing and you're most likely using a more aggressive technique than would be needed to get the non-clacking bass guitar tone you're looking for. In order to get there, you'd need to raise the action to at least 2mm, and you have to hit the strings way softer. Try to hit the strings from the sides of the strings, and not the top. The clacking sound comes from your strings hitting your fingerboard every time you pluck a note. Minimizing that, takes time and practice because you've got to play softly, but at the same time have the same control that you get from hitting every note as hard as you can. Compression helps, too.
