Hi! Edu here, the Illustrator. We have developed a "Solidarity Deck" it will be able at conventions and website. They replace all the animals in the game with puppets, actors, and automats. All the rising will be destined to a Catalan NGO "Fundació Mona" They rescue primates from the entertainment industry.

Just picked up my copy of 3 Ring Circus at Gen Con and got the solidarity deck too. Beautiful game and I enjoyed my demo. Looking forward to bring it to my game group this week.

I went from having just heard about this game, it jumping to the height of my most anticipated of the year list, to a Rahdo Run Through in the span of what seems like only a matter of a few weeks. Thank you so much for covering it, I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy.

I feel like forgetting to move Barnum is a player problem not a game problem. If you are going to remember you will if you are going to forget you will. During the run through there was nothing stopping a change in timing of when to move Barnum as suggested, yet it was still forgotten. I am with you on baby steps, I dislike turns where you just get 1 resource, for example, even if 1 resource is a big deal in that particular game - it just doesn’t feel great. Getting that same resource as a bonus to doing something else is much more satisfying. However baby steps aren’t a problem if turns are fast and I think they are here, you play a card, opponent plays a card and back to you. That’s why it works in Ticket to Ride. It is bad though when you have to wait ages for your turn to come around again and you just take that one resource. I found Merchants and Marauders the worst for this. I’ll wait 20 mins for my turn - do move move move - then wait another 20 mins.

The theme, production, area control mechanic and playing time attracted me to this one. Curious though, how much player interaction is going on? Is the area control for performances the main player interaction, and how would you rate that? I prefer games where I am somewhat interested in other players turns and how it might affect my turn, and not just head down doing my own little puzzle.

there's area majority for each region on the board, which can be a huge source of points, and there's the racing element to be the first to perform in more lucrative spots. and i'd say both of those elements would demand constant attention to what your opponents are up to (or you think they're up to since it's a closed hand game) :)

lol 'second class citizen' Yes, it does feel like that at times when you can't use the board because you play solo or 2 only. Nice covers are a good idea!

Thanks so much for bringing up the animal abuse issue! When I first saw this game, my initial reaction was disgust. As an animal welfare activist for over 20 years, I've seen far too much of the horror that has gone on, and still continues to take place in the circus industry. Kudos to the designers for including a write up about the realities, and for coming up with the replacement deck and charitable donations, that's wonderful to see! The game looks fun, but even with the animal replacement cards, I have such a negative reaction to the theme based on personal experiences that I just won't be able to enjoy it. I wish them the best, and I hope that in any future printings they just go with the non-animal versions...or at least include the replacement deck in the base game. Thanks again for your understanding and compassion. Hopefully as a species in general, we're starting to become a little more aware of the needless suffering we inflict for our own pleasure and entertainment. Kind people are my kind of people!

11:18 I agree with you, they should have left the animal acts out of the game. It is not enough to just make a written statement as when people play it, it normalizes the abuse subconsciously.

someone else in the comments mentioned that they are fund raising for animal rescue based on the sales of the game, but i haven't found the source as yet

@@rahdo Yes, I did see that comment as well. Still, I'd rather have a game focus on the positive or include aspects of finding a solution to an issue, like Hidden Ark. They updated aspects of Viticulture World to shift their initial focus to something more positive. We do have very similar views on life's issues and how they manifest in board games. I will reach out to you directly with the project I'm planning to launch, and maybe it could turn into a collaboration.

I lean the other way. I think any historical game that skips or rewrites the era's injustices does an injustice. Skipping it instead of talking about it means the romanticized view of the theme due to other media (mainly TV) continues. I think it's better that games include them and confront them head on... knowledge is the best cure for romanticized ideas.

leaving out the specific cards of animals that are abused and treated cruelly doesn't mean one has to "skip" history. the cards could have been replaced with a different historically accurate acts and a section of the rules could still have been devoted to _why_ they were left out, with links for additional reading, drawing attention to how animals are still being mistreated to this very day for human entertainment. so you can have your cake (enjoy a game without having to role-play as an animal abuser) and eat it too (still make a statement about horrific historical practices that are still with us today). or you can do probably what i suspect many will have to do to enjoy the game: ignore the fact that we're role-playing as animal abusers. as i said in the video, that's too bad, could have done a bit better.
