It would be interesting to see this same information broken down into how much a group tends to expand as each round is fired once you are past the 3 round group. Is it always the later rounds in a group that spoil it? if so, is it a hot barrel? Nerves? Fatigue? changes in environmental condition or a simple lack of concentration after several rounds (i know I have this problem) or just the odds of eventually firing a round thats a bit out of spec?

When I was in the military we qualified with 3 round groups! When you are sighting in or working your groups with a hunting rifle, USE THREE ROUND GROUPS! A hunting rifle is not a high end target rifle! Skinny barrels on hunting rifles usually do not do very well with anything more than THREE ROUND GROUPS! Skinny hunting barrels usually get too hot when you shoot more than 3 round groups and rounds start wandering! For a thicker contoured barrel you can shoot more than three round groups.

The Army uses 200 m 10 shot groups. The mean radius is then calculated for the accuracy of both the cartridge and rifle.

Yep, back in the day we were taught to shoot 3 round groups and we hit what we shot at. No need to waste ammunition or tire our eyes pound our shoulders out with the heavier calibers. Soldiers shooting iron sighted M16s in the 1980s made first round hits to 300 meters 97% of the time training with their 3 round groups.

Another thing 5-shot or larger groups can show you is something wrong with your setup. I had an M1A that could shoot sub-MOA 3-shot groups; however, every once in a while the point of impact jumped. Drove me nuts until I was cleaning the rifle and saw a shiny spot on the right, back corner of the Scout scope rail. It turned out the op rod was hitting the scope rail every once in a while. After I fixed that the rifle shoots 1 MOA or better with 3, 5 or 10 shot groups.

I need more people to say this. More people need to know this. I actually have a spreadsheet of composite groups that are overlayed together to show people how inaccurate 3 round groups are. You’re right. It’s all about ego.

Once you have fired the second shot you’ve defined the smallest group you can possibly get regardless of how many you shoot after that second shot.
@SwampfoxOpticsАй бұрын
That is correct, but we are less concerned with how "small" our groups are, and more concerned with how big they get with more than 2 rounds

@@SwampfoxOptics The military doesn't seem to have any problems with their soldiers qualifying with 3 round grouips! Been doing it for literally, YEARS!
