Your explanation was very helpful and not one that I had found in other locations. I'm looking forward to being skilled enough someday "to borrow" chords. That's my real goal: composition. A lofty goal for a beginner, but one that seems doable with your approach. Thank you.

One of my original songs is written in key of A minor. It provides a dark & gloomy mood being in a minor key. The starting child pattern was originally Am - Dm - Em7. But using Em7 as dominant V chord just did not resolve well. I changed Em7 to E7. The E7 chord resolves very well. So the chords start with Am - Dm - E7. This would be A minor *harmonic* scale. Good video.

I really enjoy your explanations. They are clear and succinct. My question regarding the melodic minor is, within the context of a musical piece (not just scales), how do you decide if you are going up or down the scale? Does it depend on the previous notes?
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
Steve Rose not sure I understand the question. However, outside the context of the scale, you’ll almost never see the scale be used like that. It would be altered to sure the harmony or melodic contour of the piece/song. So the ascending or descending rule is not that important

Hi there. Just to inform you that there are actually 4 Minor Scales, 3 of which you have mentioned and 1 of which you havent mentioned. There is also the "Hungarian" Minor Scale, also known as the Gypsy or Egyptian Minor Scale. This involves the raising of the 4th and 7th degrees of the scale by a semitone, ascending and descending! Best wishes and greetings from the UK. Nigel Martin.

ah the parallel minor explains why I have heard C major and C minor chords used one after another in songs (e.g. Wake me up when september ends - Greenday). I thought Cmaj and Cmin chords would sound terrible in a chord progression because they are in different keys, but they dont. Is that because it is the parallel minor and they both resolve to the same root and hence sound ok played together when one is used as a transition to the other? tks!
