Hi Danceliners! In this video we will feature 3 sea-themed ballets to watch during summer! :)
In particular, we chose a group piece, a duo and a solo.
1) The group piece is Balanchine's "Union Jack" ( • Parte1: Union Jack ). Union Jack is a ballet made by New York City Ballet co-founder and founding choreographer George Balanchine to traditional British tunes, hornpipe melodies and music-hall songs, ca. 1890-1914, adapted by Hershy Kay. The premiere took place on 13 May 1976, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, to honor British heritage in the United States.
2) The duo is Duet from 'The Swimmer' ballet (Lolita) - Maria Kochetkova and Sebastian Kloborg ( • Duet from 'The Swimmer... ) performed at Dance Open. Lolita is Shchedrin's fourth work for the stage based on literary works by Russian writers. Lolita (Лолита) is an opera in two acts by composer Rodion Shchedrin. Composed in 1992, it uses a Russian language libretto by the composer which is based on Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 novel of the same name, written in English. The opera premiered in 1994 at the Royal Swedish Opera, Stockholm, using a Swedish language translation of the original libretto.
3) The solos are from the ballet "Ondine" (originally choreographed by Ashton on music of Hans Henze). There are even more, you can check them here: • Evgenia Obraztsova - O... . Ondine bears a resemblance to The Little Mermaid. The story derives from Fouqué's novella Undine, the tale of a water-nymph who marries a mortal. Ashton originally produced Ondine for the Royal Ballet in 1958.
