When my daughter was a baby she had a wonderful osteopathic doctor who warned me about those rigid white baby shoes everyone always wore. He said they would not allow her feet to develop properly and she should wear something softer and more flexible. I'm glad I followed his advice.

Improving your arch is something I thought was impossible to do -- that you were just stuck with your arch. Can a flat-footed person do these exercises and improve the arch, avoiding surgery at some point?
@ruben-en4jz4 жыл бұрын
probably not, i think exercises can help if you have flat feet because of weak muscles but not if you have flat feet because of your bone structure
@ruben-en4jz4 жыл бұрын
@Krysuna if you have weak muscle then your arch is only flat when you are standing because it collapses due to your own weight. try to look at your feet when you are on your bed, if they are completly flat then you have a flat arch
@idekanymore16244 жыл бұрын
@@ruben-en4jz you are talkin about flexible flat feet and rigid flat feet right? If flat feet are rigid then it's not possible to fix them. But if they're flexible flat feet then it's possible to build and arch with exercise.
@dm51292 жыл бұрын
@@idekanymore1624 Yes, I would think increased flexibility and strength can only be a good thing. I have certain foot problems and if I would wait until my feet are not sore I would never walk again. Would you famous physical therapists know if flat feet can cause pain on the tops of the feet (on the bony part, right above where the arch should be)? That's where I often get pain and the only thing I can think of is that no arches in my feet may be causing it. Just curious...
@cstevens725 жыл бұрын
Cish 60 yes, a flat foot will cause pain on the tops of the feet. I had the same thing a couple of years ago. Felt like all the bones in the tops of my feet were broken! I saw a foot and ankle specialist and he said it was my flat feet. He recommended orthotic inserts and supportive shoes like New Balance or Avia. I got a pair of rigid orthotics at his office (not custom), but you can also find a good softer pair at a sporting good store that sells running shoes.

On these issues I always think of the Roman Caligae, the flat-soled boots worn by the legions. They conquered the known world from Britain's climate to North Africa and the footwear seemed to work well. And then we have all our indigenous peoples who have gone barefoot or lightly-shod for millennia. So, I conclude that a flat-soled shoe is probably an ideal. However, not something to step into (!) directly from our modern habituated thick-soled environment without some gradual process.
@moggridge15 жыл бұрын
@Joe Blow I can see your point there. My feeling is that like a lot of ailments, if they had caused problems, the Romans would have found a way around it with a different design or found a treatment that would have been handed down to us. Especially as their empire lasted 1000 years. But then again I'm not an historian, or a podiatrist! 😂

Don't really know, but maybe try putting your foot in that position manually by lifting your arch with one hand and pushing the front of the foot to the floor, and then let go and hold it, try to feel what it takes, which muscles activates, and maybe after a while you can do it using only a foot. If you can't shape your foot like that even with your hands, maybe there's a lack of mobility and you can work on that.
