WBG was wondering why a #2 pencil as preferred. The number denotes the hardness of the graphite in a pencil. Number 1 is the softest. It leaves the darkest mark and is worn down the fastest. It also doesn't get very sharp. A #2 gets sharp enough for writing and wears down slower but doesn't dent or rip the paper. The marks can be easily erases. Higher numbers are used in art or technical drawings for their precision work, not writing by children.
