Thanks for boiling it down! I have always heard the general “arpeggiate the chords, play the guide tones, play shapes” stuff but never figured out how to organically incorporate exercises into the actual improv. Thanks for the new take!

I'm confused about something, the other musicians play the harmony while the improviser plays right? So why is it so important for the soloist to play chord tones? Isn't the harmony already covered by the others? Secondly what about when soloists play 'outside the changes' what happens to the harmony then?

Playing chord tones on strong beats will allow the improviser's lines to outline the chord changes clearly, which they should be doing whether they're playing with other musicians or not! This is (in part) what all the masters do. Re: playing outside the changes, there's a number of different approaches to this...this conversation may be better for another video :)
