Excellent vid, Rob! Funny that you mention the Schwalbes as your winter tires. I love the Maxxis DHF (on the rear!) and DHRII (on the front) in summer and switch to Schwalbe Eddy Current soft (rear) and Magic Mary soft as soon as it gets muddy. A friend of mine just loves the DHRII/Magic Mary combo that you mention towards the end of the vid. Keep up the good work. Subscribed.

Hey Rob Rides Emtb! Two things happen when a MTB tire hits a big bump and compresses! One is the air pressure inside goes up a bit because the inner tire volume is less! The second is that pressure increase stretches the cords which increases the inner volume! That volume increase can be compensated for by increased starting pressure to reduce pinch flats! The thicker casing tires allow you to use less pressure because the thicker cords that make the casing fabric stretch less when you hit a bump and compress the tire to the rim! DHF/DHR but trying the Assegai up front. Run one on my Sommet and feel it's a bit more predictable than the DHF, don't need to lean it quite so far to grip. Shorties in the winter.

Il probably be going back to the maxxis assegai / dhr2 Last year I got 24 miles ( mostly off road ) out of my bullit with a pair of max grip assegai’s? but recently tries a set of Michelin dh22’s, amazing grip but the battery was totally flat at 11 miles. I also like the magic Mary front and rear in 2.4 with a super soft on the front

Great video as always, For all my accoustic bikes, the legendary DHF front and back with the correct size for rolling/confort. I trust 20 years of that perfect combo. For my Ebike, the Eddy Current for the grip and solid side wall, that tire is bombproof and never punctured in any situations.

DHF Exo up front, DHR 2 Exo rear with Vitoria insert. I use these in dryer conditions. They roll fast. Magic Mary Evo Addix up front, Hans Dampf Evo Addix rear with Vitoria insert. I use these in wet conditions for deep loam or mud. They roll fast. For the max grip in the wettest muddy conditions I use Magic Mary front and rear, on which they are very predictable but, are slow rolling. Vitoria Martello front, Victoria Mota rear with Vitoria insert. I prefer these for wet roots or rocks, on which they somehow find extra grip but, not deep loam or mud as they tend to slip. They roll fast.

I have run all kinds of tires on my 24 inch BMX, and honestly the best knobbed tire for that application has been my maxxis snyper tires. It turns out that a youth cross country tire that inflates to 65 psi is perfect for a pump track, Then again, I don’t know how many people in the comments are going to actually be into 24 inch BMX, 26 and 29 is so popular but they’re just not manoeuvrable like a BMX

To add to the complexity, how's about talking about tire inserts Rob. Allowing you to run the softer, malleable, lighter tire without the fear of it burping or flexing too much. I have found this to be an ideal set up on my Levo to conserve battery (running exo with cushcore)

I run Hans Dampf 2.8 front and back, tubeless, 1200 miles (close to 2k) no flats. The rear needs replacing so I ordered the Eddy Current front and rear, will see how that runs. SoCal trails rocky loose chunks, the Hans Dampf wore really well, ran at 23-24 front 18-20 psi rear. Have to pedal a little harder on the flats but they have gotten me out of trouble on the crud. Forgiving tire for an average rider like myself.

Haven’t tried yet but Michelin DH 22 f DH34 r looks like a good combination as well as the ones Rob mentioned. E13 also worth checking out, had good results. Maxxis Double Down carcass I find gives good damping over roots etc. and with Maxgrip it’s very good in damp to wet conditions. For outright sloppy conditions I have heard good things about WTB tyres, they make a “wet” specific version but not tested yet.

Where is the performance line from schwalbe in terms of protection/stability and grip? Where is the grip of schwalbe soft compound? (Compared to maxxis) I feel like schwalbe performance tires are between exo and exo + and even relatively soft for enough grip. Schwalbe soft should be similar to maxxterra.

Minnion DHR sidewall cut 22mm, had to sew it up and patch it inside and out , still using tubeless and the vast majority of my riding is lakeland rock !! i was running Nukeproof inserts , i heard it go but with the inserts itdoesnt feel as tho your on the rim instantly

What about inserts though?? I bent a couple of rims and had loads of punctures in the Surrey Hills, but now live in The Alps and run Rimpact inserts. No dents or punctures at all in 18m on terrain that is way more rocky - even did a few days in the rock heaven that is Finale Ligure with no punctures. So the inserts allow me to choose a thinner construction tyre.

Only thing I was aware of was the hardest heavy chunky tyres being slow rolling takes it’s toll on the batteryI found on my focus jam2 it was about half mile per section two half miles less per battery I run tec pac that is five miles, admittedly that’s against some really fast rolling continental fine tread low profile, obviously not going to be any good in muddy conditions they have gone everywhere I’ve wanted in the dry lose over hard pack etc

I have a question, when looking at almost all tires, when mounted correctly the front side of the knobs have sort of a incline from the base of the tire to the top of the know, but in the back the knob is just squared off. Wouldn't the squared off be better for the front as it seems it would dig nor in to the dirt?

Great explanation. I went for an Assagai 29 2.5 exo on my rear for better mud clearance on my 2020 Levo which feels great, less rotational forces, just nicer than the stock stiff 2.6s on the rear. Now concerned it won’t be tough enough. Any other recommendations on rears for the 2020 Levo? I’m 13 stone, riding a large, living in the Lakes.

Great video but (there is always a but) I would like to give you 3 more important points nobody seems to notice: 1. For XC generaly the rule is fast rolling for hardpack ecc. Problem is that many of us use roads to get to trails and an XC tyre can get dangerous and slippery on a trail with rocks or stones. So I believe there is no rule such as "if you riding most on road...use Xc tyres". Nope. What it is important as a question is: what are your target areas daily? Hardpack or trails? Do you climb roads to download a trail? So trail tyres with knobbs and not xc tyres if what matters is SAFETY even if the trails is just 10%-20% of your ride. As you say: "all compromise" 2. The tubeless matter. Tyres as schwalbe are quite impossible to place on the bid with a normal high volume pump or a hand pump. While maxxis and continental are excellent. Continentals sit on the bid even without any kind of repair tubeless liquid and with a use of a hand pumb. [the usual trick is to sit half tyre of each side on the bid using a tyre lever before pumping. Schwalbe wont sit unless u use it for some days with a tube so for it to take a better shape. But it will be hard again. You are going to be trying for 1 hour and more, full sweat and hundreds of mosquitoes having a party on your body. A flat schwalbe on the trail is a PAIN in the ASS cause it unlocks from the bid when perforated. A continental will sit there always glued even when flat.] 3. The "cut" tire matter. Fire roads in Greece have an issue. Track drivers tend to throw broken pottery / roof tiles on the trails to give better traction for their veihicles when the fireroad is just plain ground and gets muddy in the winter. Some tires get the cut by roof tiles so easily. Others have a much better resistance to that kind of material. A cut wont be saved by tubeless tech. You need a tubeless repair kit in spot and most of the times you lose the whole of the repair liquid in the process from within the tyre. So thats the pain in the ass... to be left 30Km away from home in a lost from civilitation trail with a tubeless tyre which wont inflate, if it is of the number 2 situation.. Cause it will not sit on the bid. Immagine now being on a mountain just some minutes before sun set. I am not very sure but quite sure to say this: Conti trail king never failed me with pottery. Maybe I was lucky. Schwalbe hans dumpf failed immediatly even with a smal hole-cut. Conti trail king fails on the long run on trails with stones cause it accumulates cuts of small rocks. Now I have a maxxis aggressor and in a few days DHR II. We ll see.... These are issues that for me matters a lot. Cuts, safety and tubeless.

Did you try on emtb turn around rear tyre (dhr II). For emtb is more importan hill climb grip and not so much brake grip and the knobs are "sharper" if you turn around.... So what you think about that? Tnx for answer👍
