In this urban sketching tutorial video, join me as I explore three distinct color paint styles, ranging from structured and precise to loose and expressive, and somewhere in between. I will be using acrylics but in a style that looks and acts like watercolor.
Discover valuable techniques and insights as I demonstrate how to create captivating urban sketches with different painting approaches. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this tutorial is designed to enhance your skills and bring new dimensions to your urban sketching repertoire.

Which style do you like most? Structured, loose or very loose?

Like the loose style. It is very helpful to see you do all three in one sitting.

Structured for me. I fill in details about how people interact with the buildings. I like the looser colours too, and wonder how structured lines and loose colour would tell a different story.

I really enjoy very loose. It's interesting to see things that are naturally structured have a loose style to it. Really makes you see the world a bit different

After having decided in the part 1 video that I liked the middle ground best for me (and I’m pretty sure that’s my naturals sketching style), having seen the three styles painted now, I am convinced I need to experiment a bit more with an even looser style. 😂

Smashing! I haven't seen fluid acrylics used like that in urban sketching, before. I am a watercolorist & portraitist. I really love the look of this acrylic process. Bloody brilliant!

I hadn't either, I started using them for my fine art as I wanted something more archival over watercolor.

Super to see 3 different methods in comparison! Although I find 3 fascinating, I like 2, but will try all 3 after practicing your 3 sketch styles. Perhaps I’ll change my mind. Like very much your paintings behind you! Find complex building structures so difficult, amazed at how you artists capture architectural correctness! Thanks

Thanks so much for the feedback! Did you try the different styles? How did it go? I'll do a video on how to sketch complex structures for you.

Thanks for your reply to a prior comment and suggestions for other videos to watch. I am drawn to the look of the loosest style and I also think loose sketches are far more fun to do! Im also a big fan of negative space so left to my own devices I like to leave some areas barely sketched and without color. That said I think my problem becomes the age old worry about what others might think. I recently did a commission for a friend of her brother’s beach house (for a Christmas gift) and did a very structured line and wash. She loves it thankfully but honestly I kind of don’t. Any advice on how to just do what I like and stop worrying about what people think? Forget Sketchy Brett for a second. I need Therapist Brett. 😂

Welcome to my safe space. Have a seat on the couch! :) I get this a lot! So many people are focused on what other people are going to think or what they think other people want. It's a classic mistake that almost every artist makes. When we talk about finding your style, it comes down to confidence. Confidence to produce what YOU want to produce. For me, it's easy... there are so many amazing artists in this world, the people who enjoy my art are the ones that my art will attract, it can't and shouldn't be for everyone. That's what make it what it is. Also, my number one tip... just have FUN!

I'm thinking if you used the brighter colors in the second sketch that it would be more attractive to me. Sometimes "loose" is just a little too far out there for me, but I love bright colors! BTW you gave a very well articulated description of the 3 styles. You are a great art teacher!
