I like the way you think Mae. I've been a seller on Etsy since 2006 and it seems there are so many people complaining about fees and leaving Etsy now but there is going to be fees no matter what platform you use and not putting all your eggs in one basket is always a good idea. Sell on Walmart, too! There aren’t; a million guru courses teaching people how to sell on Walmart - but there should be! i realized they’ve developed a model allowing small businesses to sell there just like Amazon. the system will differ, but the traffic they get at Walmart is still huge, too! It won;t take much to add them on once you’ve established yourself on your Shopify site then on Etsy then Amazon, so do Walmart too then. Good luck!

Walmart isn't necessarily going to have an audience for handmade goods, though. They are a discount retailer, which is the opposite of handmade typically.

I love the part about engagement ... I know so many sellers that the first thing they do is just share the link to their own profile telling people to check out their store... Most of which of friends. Now if that product isn't something their friends would buy- that act of bringing people in 1 day - hurts the CTR on Etsy and eventually prevents ranking higher. And if I haven't commented this before- love your videos! A lot of the info is things I kinda know, but having you "in the background" while working on designs, especially for my upcoming Shopify, really helps keep me focused! You're awesome, keep making videos, and stay safe

A question I have is how selling on one’s own site BEFORE selling somewhere else that assists in promotion and search-finds (like Etsy, etc.) is how is this wise? If you don’t already have a substantial following that’s invested in visiting your personal site, I think you’d be less likely to do business there, vs a largely populated site like Etsy for example, where lots of people are able to search for your wares. Do you still recommend starting on your own site if you don’t have a pre-established and invested following?
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I think Etsy is fine as a starting platform but the earlier you can launch your own site the better so that you can immediately start building your own email list and connections. Keeping Etsy as an additional income stream makes sense if you can handle both. I just don't advise having it as your only option. :)

Etsy Ads are not working as intended at the moment - you should go to the forums and check that out. You are throwing away money if you are using their ads. Offsite ads have a much better ROAS - you won't be able to opt-out of those once you make over 20K/yr.

@@joedalton5 Yes, the competition is fierce for jewelry, and Etsy ads do not allow for much control, so it is like you are shooting in the dark. I feel a jewelry seller needs a fair sized budget to run the course with ads, and the ads need to stay there for about 2 weeks to a month to give the allorhythmia time to understand the time of day/evening to show your ads. Ads are very good for brand exposure though. It is also important to be careful what you put in your title and keywords. If I had "silver bar necklace", Etsy might show customers "silver necklace" which is way too broad and too many people click on it out of curiosity. I learned that the hard way.

So I’m a minor and I was thinking of starting an online business but don’t know where to start. When I have a website, how do I wire it to a bank account (possibly a parents account or maybe I could make one if I legally can) and how does the customers money get to my bank account. And how do I get the printing labels from their order. Also if they pay for shipping am I just charging extra or will that shipping fee actually directly pay for shipping so I won’t have to pay at the postal office? Sry for all my questions I’m just really curious ☺️
@CreativeHiveCo4 жыл бұрын
When you have a website, you will connect the payment methods to a bank account, which will then deposit your funds into the bank account or PayPal account. The payment processor does the work of taking the customer's money and getting it to you. Labels can be printed through your website or Etsy or PayPal. You need to input the size of the package. Your customer will be paying for the shipping through a separate shipping charge that you will set up. Whether you buy postage online through a label or take the package to the post office and pay for postage there is up to you but you will have the money to cover it either way.

I’m more concerned on reporting the income, do they send you a W2 or something for taxes
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
No, as a small business you need to keep track of your own profits and expenditures and report them using a Schedule C. W2's are only sent to employees, and you are not an employee of Etsy's. If you sell over a certain level, Etsy will send you a 1099-K to include on your filing. help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000336447-Will-I-Receive-a-1099-K-Tax-Form-From-Etsy-?segment=selling

I sell antique electronics which means a small percentage go bad after a few hours or weeks. I tell my customers that there is no warrantee beyond what I can test for. As my volume has increased, I am getting more customers with issues (approximately .1 to .2 percent of sales). I have stuck to my guns, but the time and mental energy expended to deal with such issues is becoming onerous. Does anyone know of a third party I can use to provide coverage / a warranty - at the customer’s cost - for my items? Thanks!

Getting your own website up is not the best place to start in my opinion Unless you've already created a following. Where these days KZbin is possibly the better one. You need immediate traffic. If you don't have any following yet use the platforms she's talking about that will create sales and a following, then create your own website.
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. If you have your website in advance, you can direct any customers you get from Etsy and other platforms to your website with included marketing materials. You can get that immediate traffic from other sources but you need to have someplace ready to send them.
@martindekker82033 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeHiveCo Sure doing Both at the same time would be fine. But don't just do your website alone (that would mean you'd have to find your own traffic for your website) without any of the other platforms to start making sales.

I’m sorry, but your advice about starting a website first doesn’t work for most people who are starting out on Etsy because they need extra money. It’s not so easy to get customers on a website, whereas with Etsy you can start selling almost immediately. I don’t have the funds to start a Shopify store and pay for ads to get sales. Etsy is a much better way to start, and then you can transition to your own website with the funds you earn.
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
This is true, but you should have a plan in place to get your business off Etsy as soon as possible then. Get those customers to opt in to your email list to start with.

No, don't lower your prices - that is the last thing you should do. New businesses take time to get traffic, that is why you haven't gotten sales yet. You can choose to use ads or social media to help drive traffic to your shop, but devaluing your work to make sales is just bad advice.

Have friends and family purchase first and leave reviews. Then, work from there.

@@CreativeHiveCo sorry for my bad advice, but from what I understand, she is getting some traffics but no sales, I didn't mean she should keep her products low forever just until she gets some reviews because it's true a lot of ppl don't like to buy a product that doesn't have review, paying for ads is not always an option for everyone and it can give you anxiety when you see your self losing money and making none, this just something worked for me
