In 1997 I toured the Saturn engine plant in Buffalo, which was next level for GM. One side of the building looked like the movie Gung Ho where it was a typical dingy GM plant where they were making the Chevy motors and the other half looked like a clean room science lab where they were putting together the Saturn motors. The guy giving us the tour was so proud of how much care went into every Saturn component compared to the other GM motors.

I recently needed an extra car and bought an exceptionally well-cared for 2001 Saturn SL2, and I 100% agree. I paid a hair over $3k for it with 130k miles. It's fully loaded and has a 5 speed. It's absolutely brilliant and fun to drive. I've had to do very little to it and what few things I have had to do mostly cost less than $10 with pick n' pull parts and any work can be done by a novice with hand tools and KZbin. I keep it in a garage and fully expect to still be surviving 20 years from now. It's really such a forgotten gem for basic transportation.

A Rolls Royce, a BMW M6, and a Saturn SL2 show up and the Saturn is the star of the video. I loved those first- and second-generation Saturns. I briefly owned a 1997 SC1 5-speed. It was dark metallic green with a beige cloth interior and a clamshell 3rd door. The SOHC 1.9L by that point had 100hp, which doesn't sound like anything, but it was a pretty lightweight car, and with the manual, it actually had decent power and was fun to drive.

Saturn was never profitable enough to fund the development of a new model let alone a range of models. It only had the financial resources to perform facelifts and minor updates. Original owners were enthusiastic about their vehicles but eventually, a majority of them moved on. General Motors rebadged other models of vehicles to try to appeal to them and keep them loyal to the brand

It's just that Americans don't think on what's good for them anymore, just only on looks. Tons of Europeans, tons of sport cars and Japanese small cars. Luxury, speed and compact. Americans did try that but as always, no one pays no attention. And that's why they go to badge engineering cause the imports ' did the same ', I don't know if any of you notice that... Chevrolet Cavalier is one example....

Wow! I bought a brand new SLT-2 in 1994 and absolutely loved the car. The car drove great and the chassis was very tight. There were two design issues that absolutely drove me nuts. 1st, the hvac controls were not back-light, so it was very difficult to see what the hell you were doing at night. 2nd, when it got below 45 degrees, the compressor would not come on to help defog the front windshield. So then you had to switch to full heat or the windshield was fogged over! The defrost debacle was the design flaw that drove me insane!!!!!

I was truly shocked to see a Saturn on this episode, I honestly have yet to find a video where people have lots of negativity to say about the s-series, I have had a few over the years and they truly are a robust cheap car. My first Saturn was a 96 SL2 auto and I tortured that poor car but it never ever gave up I ended up wrapping it around a light pole and it still Ran an drove. Now currently I currently own 2 1996 Saturns a sw2 auto and a SL2 5spd have had them for 7yrs and don’t plan on getting rid of them as they are way better and more reliable than my newer cars 🤣

Back in the early 90s, a semi-retired friend in the UK with engineering experience bought a cheap and well used early 60s Silver Cloud to renovate and work on as a hobby. He told me they were fairly easy to work on with generic service parts and even used componants being available. After he completed it, it sat in his store barn for a while. His wife thought it too ostentatious to travel locally in or take on a touring holiday. A neighbour asked him if he'd like to do a family wedding with it, which he was paid for, and word got round so he was asked again and again. Eventually he even bought himself a uniform to wear while driving to complete the image! Word of mouth brought in a surprising amount of weddings business. Eventually he was asked if he was interested in making some good money using it to ferry foreign businesspeople about starting with an airport pickup. He said the car earned it's keep and more. It was very reliable, but needed attention from time to time, especially proper regular servicing.

The Silver Shadow sounds like an interesting project car if you're willing to replace the engine, transmission and braking system with more reliable GM hardware. The problem is that if you REALLY wanted to make it reliable, you'd have to replace the hydropneumatic suspension with coilovers. This sounds like an expensive proposition.
@kameljoe21

The problem would be finding a viable car in good shape for cheap. Less than 5k and 20k for the new engine, trans, brakes and suspension would be a steal at 25k to end. Now finding the right hardware is the problem. I am sure there is a forum out there with all the details. Just going to take you a month to sort it out. There appears to be a lot of these older models out there rotting away. No one drives them daily.

Saturn really changed the automotive industry under the hood. Because it was a completely clean sheet of paper design, the engineers at Saturn decided to seriously tidy up everything under the hood of their first model. That meant they organized the hoses, vacuum lines, wires, and everything else provide a neat orderly look. No other manufacturer at that time was doing that. Not Toyota, not Honda, nobody. Look under the hood of any other car from 30 years ago and hoses and wires went everywhere. How things looked under the hood was not important. They were really the first manufacturer to provide an attention to detail under the hood.

Actually the S1, S11 RR Shadow, T & T1 Bentley is actually quite easy to work on. The SU's can be a little challenging. As you mentioned always buy the best one you can afford, not a project. Parts are the major issue. They are expensive and can send you bankrupt. Now the later 80's Spur, even a good one will break you. Others to avoid are early Jaguar XJS, XJ12. They fixed a lot of issues from 1979. For something a bit newer, avoid the 1984 to 1987 XF Ford Falcon\Fairmont\Fairlane\LTD. These are really badly built, though cheap to repair the Cam wares excessively, panels never fit. If you want something similar get the 82-84 XE. It's also better looking

My uncles friend started a limo/car service with an 80s era Rolls Royce. He could never turn a profit duebto the fact that 1. The car was so expensive to repair and maintain and 2. It was in the shop so often he rarely was ever able to even drive the damn thing for its inteneded purpose of making money with 😅😅😂

3 of the finest unpolished gems in the parking lot. Had 2 Rollers & a Bentley, '59, '61 & '63, 30 years ago for the same price as today. Think about that fer a sec....

The one serious downside to the Saturn engines is they had a tiny drain hole in the block for oil. If you let the car go 3200 miles without an oil change it would throw the timing chain. My 2nd wife's car did this only four or five times.

Bought ours new in '97, would blow the overflow cap off while coolant was still cold, dropped the timing chain with 83,500 miles. Got oil changes on time. Repairs were more than book value for the car, we scrapped it

I have to agree with the other people, an old rolls is one of the least surprising classics to never buy😂

It's bad when someone from the UK tells you they wouldn't buy a Rolls or a Landrover, they are the biggest POS going. Take that back, I ment going on a flat bed to the garage.

No car payments!! Have a 2006 Sportage, 06 Element. 2000 Elantra and a 07 Elantra 5 speed. Except for the 07 they all havevover 250,000 miles and are still going well with few problems. No car payments is great. Some cars last.

From the sound of it, it sounded like it was hitting even on all four cylinders. If you bought that, I would have all the fluids changed in it, new filters, and just have it as a daily driver. Very drivable. It's nice to not have to worry about a scratch or dent made by a shopping cart at the grocery store. I simply hate worrying about an expensive luxury car being damaged while parked. Not a concern, with this old Saturn!

I often wonder if taking a car like a Rolls Royce and replacing the engine and some of the drive and suspension components with Chevy parts would make it more reliable and cheaper to repair.

I heard RVers loved Saturns, because you could flat tow them and the odometer wouldn't spin. I don't know if this is true or not and I'm curious if you guys know.

Couldn't tell you about the odometer, but they were very popular flat tow vehicles for RVs. A couple people I spoke to used them because they were lighter to tow, very compact (both for maneuverability of the RV when parking and also when day-tripping from base camp), and got great gas mileage.

That Rolls-Royce is not the nightmare you let people belueve. The headliner in that car is West Of England Wool. The leather is from Connelly. The carpets are Wilton pure wool. The hydraulics are not the black art you portray. The system is almost idenyical to that in a Citroen DS. The engine is strong and tough. The transmission is a built under license GM Turbohydramatic 400 3 speed. All in all, if you know how, maintenance is not bad for either cost of labour. Most people get intimidated by them, but take your time snd they are robust and reliable.

If someone wants a particular classic vehicle whose business is it really? It is their money to spend however they wish. Not everyone buys a classic car to make money on it! I collect Opels. I own an example of each model year from 1958 to 1975. I have restored all of them to about #2 condition and the money spent on them easily exceeds their value. I own them because my family has a long history with the marque. My father and grandfather were engineers with the company and my mother's family owns several dealerships in Germany and I grew up with them. I enjoy fiddling with them and driving them so the money spent on them is just like money spent on any hobby.

Did you consider that maybe you aren't the target audience for this video? There's plenty of people doing research into getting into buying and selling classic cars who would find this kind of video informative. Just like you are free to spend your money however you want, TFL is free to use the platform that they built to give advice that you find useless.

Then isn't the person who is interested in potentially purchasing a particular classic vehicle responsible for doing their research on the value potential trouble spots and availability and cost of parts and maintenance and deciding how to spend their own money? I know several people who own classic Roll-Royces as well as M-Series BMWs and purchase them knowing that the cost of Maintenance and Repair probably exceeds the vehicle value but for their reasons wanted them.
