Michael be like... hang on. The word creativity is derived from the latin "creō". There are lots of creō people around the world. Speaking of people, there are over 7 billion people living on Earth. Now, this brings up an interesting point: 7 is a prime number...

Thanks for watching! It was fun to try something new :) I also wanted to add some more thoughts about creativity... There are many different dimensions of creativity. These tests are widely used measures of creative potential - they don’t claim to define or measure creativity as a whole (nor should you use only one as a basis for decisions about yourself or your abilities). The difference in the approaches and questions show how different the perspectives are of the researchers who develop them, when it comes to measuring innovative thinking and creative behaviour. Also in the Remote Associates Test, Mednick (the guy who developed it) argued that more creative people would come up with a larger number of associations, with less frequently used words. So there’s not necessarily one “answer” to the three word pairs, even though it lists answers in the studies that use the RAT. (I still prefer divergent thinking tasks, because they’re not as subjective)

I am so glad you made this video, its very informative and interesting! I'm actually in the process of applying for a PhD program and studying creativity and I enjoyed seeing that you covered a huge portion on the methods used to measure it. From what I've seen our current way of "measuring" creativity (or creative outcome) is via objective ranking from an expert panel. I think its very interesting that our running definition of creativity is to come up with something new and useful which is also very subjective. That's why there are some art pieces that sell for millions or strange sculptures that some people love and see value in and others don't think are worth the money or simply dislike. The usefulness aspect is very, very subjective... Anyways, love the video and the collaboration with VSauce!

I usually think about creativity as simply a desire to create. Maybe we need two seperate words, in which one is the creative ability you have, and the other is how much time, effort and enjoyment goes into creating. Personally I think I'm not above average in creative ideas, but I love to create.
@Citrine-K8 жыл бұрын
Good thought! I totally agree. Just the other day I was thinking about a few KZbinrs who wouldn't be considered *artistically* creative but expressive instead. Or that their content isn't overly unique/original but it's easily recognised that they have a passion to create. It's just a way to vent their energy I think. 😊

The test with the three words where one has to find the thing that combines them all reminds me of a game I'm used to play with my little sister when we are bored. It goes like this: One starts by looking up a word in the dictionary. Then this person reads the definition of the word out lout, and the other person tries to guess what the word is. When the word is guessed, we switch and it is the other person to look up a word.

I wanna play along! 1. Widow Bite Monkey: Banana 2.Mouse Blue Sharp: Labratory 3.Bald Screech Emblem: Toupee 4.Chamber Staff Box: armoury 5. Sore Shoulder Sweat: rugby In each example, the three words painted a picture in my mind, so I related them to a scene, then to a common factor. 1.cars, carts, bikes, Sleeping Beauty's enemy, the mind, sewing machines, pulley, trailers, wheel barrows, dolleys, gates, planes, chairs. 2.anatomy, furry, animals, mammals, make sounds, they can dig, they live in houses, they hunt, distane for humans, omnivorous, common to humans. 1. It could be a water bug, a spider, a crack on a windshield, a squid, a rawrshack, a hole in a wall, a depiction of a star, the sun, the residue of a circle with a cross on top that's been Xed out, a top view of a pyramid, the 5th dimention, a doodle, an octopus, a space craft, a bolo net gun, ground zero. 2. Make it bigger, make it a sock puppet, give it to a child, give it a nice voice, tie a string to it so it can fly, make it more colourful, associate a story to it, give it to a parent of a baby, put it on youtube as your co-host, make it a mascot. 3. I would most likely go to KZbin myself, but one could also find experienced people in different fields, gain experience yourself, try new things, experiment, diversify or specialize, library.

Chamber, staff, box. And the guys all hesitated to keep it PG rated and not say what everyone was thinking.
@Steve277758 жыл бұрын
Chamber - Staff - Box. I thought the answer had to be 'room' because it works. A chamber is a room, staff-room, box room. And a cat and a mouse are both mammals, they both have fur, a tail, they're both animals, they're both small enough to fit in a cardboard box, they both make sounds, they can both run, they are both hyper-sensitive to sound and movement, they're both alive, they both have 2 parents, they're both kept as pets, they're both warm-blooded, they both have a skeleton, they both scare people with phobias, there are taxidermy examples of both, both have been used in animal testing, they're both largely nocturnal, they both appear in cartoons, they both have one-syllable names, I'd better stop now. The picture is a spider or a vagina with a tampon string hanging out. I'd make the toy more fun by putting a 'fleshlight' in it.

6:27 You know, there's a potential for a separate cognitive test right there: When actively tasked with amusing itself, how long does the brain wait before appealing to the fun of the taboo? What I mean is after only three or four suggestions, I went to "Put a vibrating mechanism in the head... Put a bomb in it; admittedly the fun factor with that idea depends on who you ask" How many queries do you enter into a technologically limited chatbot before attempting to insult it? How many hours do you play The Sims for the first time before starting a fire? There's definitely a separate study to be conducted on how much a person's creativity manifests in the wholesome versus the profane. And before you say "Well who's to say what is profane?", I agree offensiveness is subjective, but I'm proposing a subset of reverse psychology phenomen where taboos actually enhance creativity and we have an easier time thinking of something when there's external pressure to not think about it. Something being considered "bad" actually decreases the time it takes to recall it.

About what Michael asked at 1:45 ("what makes it creative if it is converging?"). My opinion is that converging thought is one of the fundamentals of creativity, because creativity is not just creating something new out of thin air. This is a misleading simplification. Creativity is also the association of something that was already made through the means of culture. This is why folk music is so característica of any country. Even though they are different in relation to the others, all of them have some features in common (tempo, scales, etc.). The creators of music subconsciously gathered features, combined them with what their minds thought it was right and the result is something new, but with weights of what came before. And this test kinds of measures it. The right answer here is because it is a controlled experiment. Something that was picked up beforehand designed to induce one particular answer and measure if the person have more or less the ability to connect them. But on the real world, the reality is different. We are exposed to random stimuli (random "words" to classify) and no one will have the same stimuli as we have, so we will converge to something that not many people will come up about.

Me neither, or at least I dont get the answers I was supposed to get :( kinda depressing to find out in a test that you are not creative

You can look at this test as associate game with determent answer. For example Pencil, Class, Spring break the answer would be ...... School China, musket, black ...... POWDER Was that helpful?

I remember I had to take this test after scoring as gifted on an IQ test at school in order to skip a grade. I've always thought IQ was a very arbitrary number but I've always valued my creativity, so I was thrilled when they said I'd scored 99.9% percentile for creativity. The tests involved listing uses for a paper clip and an orange, and drawing things from shapes

how tf did they grade creativity ....

+Jason Cardona I wondered that too (and how they grade IQ?) the alternative uses test I believe was just a number of different uses especially if they were all functionally different. unsure how they did the drawings, I guess the more different and unexpected the better in their eyes. my guess is watching this video gives a better idea on how it's graded than anything else

+Draw Curiosity IQ is graded compared to an average score. The normal score is 100 , above that means means above average

I guess creativity is done the same way then, as the score returned to me was a percentile. 50% percentile would represent an average score. 99.9% is more creative than average.
