We've all seen the KZbin videos of people talking about the 5 things they hate about their Jeep or the 3 things they hate about a piece of gear. Well, that gave me an idea to talk through 3 things that I hate about the hobby of overlanding.
This will be part 1 of a 2 part series (second part, 3 things I love about overlanding drops next Sunday) where I'll lay out some of the downsides to the overlanding hobby and also 3 of the things that keep me coming back for more.
So, check out the full episode, drop your thoughts below, and then come back next Sunday at 11AM to see the 3 things I love that ensure I'll never stop going out and exploring.
I'm also trying something new with KZbin memberships. It's a simple way to support the channel if you'd like and you get early access to all the videos plus some other fun perks. If you're interested, click on the "Join" button below to see how it works!

I had to switch up my whole rack/tent system just to be able to use my truck as a truck. Now I bought a little Mazda for a daily so it’s not as big of a deal. Having one vehicle is rough if you need to use the truck as a truck fairly often with a full build.

I was first introduced to overlanding around 2009. Man has it changed since back then. Way too commercial now and way too many people involved in it who have let social media control their opinions and purchasing decisions. But I still like it and I don't judge anyone's choice of transportation. I've seen people on bicycles, motorcycles, cars and of course all kinds of trucks. Love meeting new people and learning from them.

People are definitely the best part (especially in person). As some others have mentioned, the social media part of it has definitely contributed to some of the negativity.

As someone who was there in the early 2000s car scene in Vegas, I feel the same way as you . If you remember though we were all kind of young back then and most of the people from there have families now, which is why a lot of them moved into overlanding. Also you want to see flaming??? Try overlanding a Rivian lol. I am at war with those who hate change, hate the gov tell them what to do, and so on. When I get on the trail with people at the end they tell me they are actually impressed with it. All we can do is keep pushing forward.

Haha, oh, I bet. I cannot understand the hate towards EV's. I personally think they're rad and once the figure out either capacity or charging limitations, they're going to quickly replace ICE vehicles as overlanding vehicles (assuming the people who hate them for some unknown reason can just recognize common sense). Good luck and keep fighting the good fight!

I’ve heard negative about running an IFS/IRS vehicle “you’ll never be able to do any serious rock crawling” (I’ll worry about that if I ever decide to do that), and I’ve also heard, “why would anyone want an off road trailer?”. And I’ve also heard the negatives in car/truck culture as well. Now, in the custom car/truck scene, I just tell them, “When you are paying for my build, then you will have the right to have an input on what’s being done to it” (of course, no comment is ever safety related).

Good morning Jason I see where you’re coming from Overlanding is almost become like when you’re in high school and there’s a bunch of groups and the groups don’t talk to other groups and it seems that people are losing the focus of the most important thing is to get out there explore meet people on the trail Have a nice chat sit by a campfire and enjoy the scenery and talk about trips at a campfire and gear 😊😊😊

The solution to the 1 vehicle problem is a trailer. You can either build out an overlabding trailer, and keep your truck usable for daily chores, or outfit the truck and use the trailer for things like mulch. Just a suggestion that may be more cost effective than another vehicle.

Yeah, that's a great point. You could do a simple M416 for not much and deck it out with your stuff. You still need someplace to store it, but it does solve that problem. I guess I lean towards a second vehicle because I want something that is fun to drive and is a total opposite to my truck, but for much less money, a trailer is a great option. Good point!

@@AllThingsOverlanding The trailer takes away the "problem" aspect of the situation, but there is certainly nothing wrong with getting a fun vehicle for the sake of having a fun vehicle if you can afford it.

Or you could just get a little trailer to pull your mulch!

I agree. I have seen the "Experts" show up in outdoor activities many times. I often ask why it can't it be about having fun and getting outdoors.

Overlanding hasn't been ruined because of toxic culture... humanity has. If anything, that makes me want to get out of town, off my phone and makes me love it even more. And I have always only had one vehicle for dd & hobbies, and I kind of get a kick out of it. Do not try to put 50 bags of mulch in the back of a 5'bed Frontier, tho. Just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be.

These aren't overlanding problems. They are people problems that have been around since the dawn of our species. Social media makes it worse but it can never go away unless society reaches some great enlightenment of how to get along without the need to destroy the "others"

Unfortunately, toxic culture is what is on news channels ,TV and radio. The effect is seen in social media, imho. I find the over landing and car community is a refreshing escape. The Beverly hillbillies had a very capable over landing rig.
