Quick question about yield and planting density. On the outdoor field Strawberries how many pounds per acre are you hoping to achieve and how many plants are you planting? Thanks
@farmerdre14 жыл бұрын
We planted 35k this season, 33.5 outside and 1.5k in high tunnel. The goal is to achieve 1 lb outside and 2 lbs insides

We watched you mow down the strawberries in field after picking, why didn't you pick the new runners off to replant than ordering new you could have been ahead of the game?? Even if I had to have found a new employee to do the job just seems to make sense. I'm not into gardening or growing for profit so my thinking is different.

The planting machine is faster and the cost of new plants is lower than the time and effort needed to take care of runners themselves, but I agree completely that the economics of it is flipped 180 on what individual gardeners do. And as an individual gardener I can vouch for the time and effort that strawberry plants need from human caretakers, both in harvesting and growing new plants, whether from runners or from seed. On the other hand, for gardeners strawberry propagation is a lot easier and convenient than tending a lot of other garden plants.

Anthracnose is why and it's not as simple as just hire someone else. And where is he gonna put those he had to clear out his tomatoes just to fit them in there devoate a whole high tunnel to pulgs or make money off tomatoes at $3 a pound all summer and make more money
@cattfishing4 жыл бұрын
Well, he sort of did that. Just not with his own.lol so, he still is "ahead of the game" somewhat by growing from rooted runners.

That is definitely a good question. the difference between larger scale farming and the home gardener is crazy how it's pretty much opposite in what method is more efficient etc.
@aliceserna6144 жыл бұрын
@@cattfishing maybe so, however each new pip was I think he said $.27. Then they need to be potted possibly, then dropped or planted out. That's a lot of handling. I'm gonna let this be a draw! It's not my money, time or decision. This was a question asked of Dre, but I got a story about a disease that wasn't mention. My best answer was between a home gardener and a business. I thought most content creators were being crystal clear.
