Holy shit doing animation like that looks so complicated with 2 people interacting, the perspective, the camera moving, adding all the SFX and such... but you showing it step by step is really amazing and shows that it can be done, it just needs a lot of time and dedication and thought. Awesome and thanks for making!

So, let's pan back a little on this idea; Ethan is an animator. His mind's eye is almost modeled to be the most congruent with projecting something on TV. A seasoned comic-book artist will be thinking of the panels in the framework, how much detail they can pack into those panels to tell their story, and the "flow." Comic books are their own meta, like any medium. Realize that Ethan comes from a background in animation, so his advice, his viewpoint, as he TELLS TIME AND AGAIN, is about industrial animation. He has great advice, and camera angle and everything still plays a role in other mediums, but there will be different ideas between them of how the story should be observed. Shit, I bet Ethan can make an hour video of how different studios, different groups in those studios, had totally different work flows, and "Professionalism" is being able to adapt to those work flows.
@MicahBuzanANIMATION2 жыл бұрын
Very good points. It's all about the context of the medium and style.

thank u ethan for this, u are a artist in so many levels my notes : 00:00 - intro 00:46 - intro 2? 01:59 - moving on! 3 simple steps to make a good storyboard | 1 - shooting reference (04:26): lets see the magic happening | 2 - doing the poses (04:56) | 3 - characterized fight VS generic figth (02:33) ((ps: u can do characterized fights when a) putting the camera in the rigth place b) understanding that character's actions will be different and it tell us a story and c) finding the rises and falls that fits better)) 06:27 - backgrounds and perspective are SO important too 07:24 - remember to match the perspective with the shots 08:16 - but, please, don't forget: you're telling a story and that's the most important 08:50 - STEP FIVE! Annalize your thing, you have to pick and choose 10:19 - audio 11:01 - gold here 12:52 - the masterpiece so the point is : tell a story (with characters and their ups and downs)! and you need to understand the space and use references
@DreamsForgetting3 жыл бұрын

Been watching your content for a week now. I stopped drawing a long time ago. Thanks to this videos, I started drawing again. It feels like my passion for the arts its regaining its flame. Back to get my dreams to work. I had a dream since I was really young. 11 or 12 years old. I loved art since as long as my mind has memory of anything. animation, Music, Acting. A big depression got me for 20 years. Just got out of that nightmare like a year ago. Was looking for my artistic spark to light up again. And found this guy. Thanks dude.

Amazing video as always! And for any aspiring storyboard artist (like myself) who wants to learn more I would highly recommend Rocketjumps tutorial on storyboards. Nick animation also uploads their animatics to KZbin as well. If you search out any storyboard artists social media there is a big chance they upload their boards. I would recommend the "king of ooo" tumblr page since that has gathered a lot of behind the scenes stuff from adventure time including a bunch of boards. Or you can go on to skilleshare through Ethans link in the description :D

I feel like I honestly screwed myself over with getting an iPad Pro. Don’t get me wrong I love it and I use it everyday for drawings but I’m going to college for animation only for me to discover too late that animating/ storyboarding on an iPad is impractical. I’m a fresh out of high school grad and I have no money to just go out and buy a new device and subscribe to these high end programs that are used for storyboarding. I literally spent almost an entire year saving up for my iPad and it’s disappointing that there aren’t programs that are compatible for storyboarding on an IOS device... but idk maybe that was a lack of research on my end...

I know this reply is super late, but! A good way is to watch something like an old bruce lee movie or even fighting instruction on youtube, and using that as your reference! I know many artists who use stuff like that to help them visualize and reference when there's something they can't quite do themselves ^^

if a short film has multiple narrative events (sequences), do the shot/scene and panel number start over for every new narrative sequence? Like sequence [narrative event] 3, scene 1, panel 1, or would it be scene 7 if the last sequence finished at scene 6??? I feel stuck and don't know what to do and I'd really appreciate it if I could get this answered by someone!
