Sounds like the security person in charge of the telephone exchange in there answered a call and got some buttons confused when parking an incoming call to transfer, and was going on to the P.A. system. They would do that to alert a person "out on the floor" to call a number where the incoming call was 'parked. If the messed up, sometimes when a call came in they would answer to the P.A. Where I used to work, what ever was on the standard P.A. system would get looped 2 times so that everyone had 2 chances to understand what was being broad cast. Just a thought!

Hi, J.T. from Green Bay. GO PACKERS!!!!! YAY!!!!! G.B. also has a P&G mill that was served by the GB&W ALCOS and Milwaukee Road F.M. H1044 WAY BACK until 1980 when the M.R. abandoned the former ALLEY TRACK that ran through the building tunnel of the H.C. PRANGE dept.store on the East side of both the FOX River and the EAST River. The F.M.SWITCHERS went to WICT RR, then WSOR. Some are saved like the Original Prototype 760 at Union Illinois that is operational. The only music I heard was the sweet sound of 100 rolling bearing trucks traveling down the tracks…. Wait! That sounds like lyrics to a good heavy metal song!
@thebeaz13 жыл бұрын
What is a 'bearing' truck?
@ArchTeryx003 жыл бұрын
@@thebeaz1 Basically the axles of the freight cars sit between free-turning rollers, thus "roller bearing". They are far less likely to jam up or catch fire than the old friction bearings, which involved the pointed ends of the axle stuck into a box with grease in it. To me, the interesting part is that there is NOTHING physically connecting the axles to the suspension frames. Only the weight of the car keeps the frame atop the axle and keeps the car rolling. Lift up the car body, the axles would stay on the track! ETA: The term "hotbox" actually comes from those old friction bearings - often the only way to detect a fire was to see if the journal "box" was hot or not. Metal roller bearings are far more fire resistant but they CAN, and do, jam and catch fire on rare occasions. Defect detectors still have temperature sensors that look for "hotboxes."

I used to do a lot of service work for Timken corp at various facilities. A couple of the fellows in engineering that I knew had cased scale steam locomotive models of the first locomotive (an alco 4-8-4,#1111) that Timken helped convert from friction to roller bearings in their offices. One of the engineers whom I became friends, who knew that I was into railroads, gave me copies of scale drawings.

@@thebeaz1 Presumably the roller bearing system that was to be used on the Alco. that'd be mighty handy if you were were doing detail work for a model railroad. If you were a railroad collector, it'd be an interesting historical artifact.

Since this train is moving and not switching, the other crew member riding in the cab looks out on his.....or her side of the engine. Back in the day, Southern engines had the long nose as forward. I guess someone in power was still living in the steam engine past.
@beeble20033 жыл бұрын
Their reasoning was that, in an accident, it's better to have the crew farther from the front of the train. Everybody else's reasoning was that giving the crew a decent view helps avoid the accident happening in the first place.

Something tells me a pedestrian is a rarity in that area then you paused and stood there so they got flustered. That was quite a few tank cars and the back drop looked like East Chicago IN refineries. The service life of a gondola is tough and the majority of those in that 150 or so unit train showed it. They are probably in ingot service and its amazing how many Conrail and Southern cars are still hanging in there. A rarity were the gondola connection cars that went from shortline ownership to NS. A truly great 🎥 with some off beat subjects. The dogs are excellent snack catchers

A few years ago I was there taking a picture of that old boxcar sitting on a dead siding. A security guard came across the road and told me that I couldn't photograph anything on their side of the road. They have signs next to the sidewalk that say no photography. Kind of odd but oh well.

Shocked that there is a siding here, even for maintenance equipment. CSX has been removing sidings with impunity across their network. What is unique on those old B&O signals is that they took them off the original signal truss and put them on a new one. Usually they replace them with current generation signals.

Yeah, P&G security is really tight. They don't allow video or photography on their property. I make deliveries to them all the time and their security guards are extremely annoying about phones and cameras. Also, I wouldn't put a bell on an outside cat - makes her easier prey for hawks and other predators to track.

Well it could be a sneaky low-tech security system...sort of like putting big signs up that say you're on camera but there's no camera. A motion detector sets off an MP3 file of "Hey You! Who are you and what do you want?" A lot of people would get spooked and go away.
