Good video brother. Also, not sure if you've had the chance. Take a trip to Nati. Check out Queensgate. It's freakin awesome! Also, if you go or have gone? Next time go eat at the Incline Public House. It's on the western hills overlooking downtown Cincinnati in Price Hill. Great views of ALL the rails all over downtown. You get views of Queensgate, the bridges over the Ohio River and all the trackage in and out of the south side of Queensgate.

perhaps a glib solution on my part born of ignorance so forgive me in advance and let me say I have full respect for you guys but isnt there a simple RF reader that can do a calculation based on where the trainmaster is directing it to go? i.e. "error code 101- train to long for siding" or some such, I surely have been guilty of over-simplifying things before, hope I get a chance to see the horseshoe curve before fall hits hard, cheers !
@AVoltigeur7 жыл бұрын
Robert Kerr we have scanners but there are variables. Our previous mark up showed us shorter. my conductor was supposed to update that info with dispatcher but failed to.
@flyingspotscanner6 жыл бұрын
Contrary to the headline, no one "messed up" here. This was all planned and carefully executed by the dispatcher and crews. It's called "doubling the siding." BTW, only 2 trains are involved here, not 3. Only looks like three.

Larry Parsons was the EVP of Operations of the SP/SSW/D&RGW, right before the UP merger. He was also friends with Phil Anschutz. Probably where he got his inspiration the D&RGW paint scheme on the WLE locomotives. Looks like the WLE got by the signal and fouled the switch. We used to call this a "corn field meet."

Even 2 trains, both being too long for the siding, can pass each other on that same too short siding, with a little extra kicking of cars back and forth. May even be the only solution on a busy congested line. Fairly standard procedure these days, when still more goods needs to be hauled after the big crisis has gone.

@@NS8010 You want to talk about inception. Many years ago, when SP was still a railroad, I had befriended several crew members who worked a local train at night in the east of Metro Phoenix. As a budding model railroader at the time, I had made a model of SP 7120, an MK rebuilt GP40 (GP40M-2 they called it). I had taken this with me to show the crew, and was actually invited into the cab of the locomotive to show the engineer. What I didn't realize at that instant was the unit I was in the cab of ... was SP 7120.

Union Pacific train dispatchers don't know the lenght of the trains they dispatch or the length of their sidings--- they would have to open a timetable or look at a consist
@thomasklimchuk441 Жыл бұрын
I am surprised the Union Pacific doesn't have computer assisted train dispatches where the computer will help the train dispatcher. The train dispatcher can still override the computer
@rateyesmertz3785 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasklimchuk441 They do. They switch it on and go eat lunch or go have a smoke. Instead of looking up how long a train is or lookingn at a timetable to see how long a sidetrack is they ask the conductor on the radio. Nobody likes doing work for a dispatcher. UP has an emergency system, if you derail or hit a car you dial 911 on the keypad of the radio. Supposedly everything stops in Omaha till the trouble is settled. I hhit a car once and it took 45 minutes for the dispatcher to respond. Having a smoke or a sammich. Train crews don't think of dispatchers as human beings, just heartless disembodied voices on a radio. They don't have feelings or feel pain like you and me.
