Hello Mr. Pahwa, as far as I know, phosphating is not done on hardware items since it might be expensive. Instead, in my opinion, such small items undergo a process called 'black oxide coating' or 'blackodising.' The black oxide coating is beneficial because it adds thickness to steel; even though it's microscopic, it helps maintain the sharpness of things like drills or screwdrivers. Also, it helps reduce corrosion and friction due to the oil or wax present. The wax or oil also allows for the material to be water-resistant.

What is blackodising

Blackodising is a conversion coating for ferrous materials, stainless steel, copper and copper based alloys, zinc, powdered metals, and silver solder. It is used to add mild corrosion resistance, for appearance and to minimise light reflection. To achieve maximum corrosion resistance the black oxide must be impregnated with oil or wax.
