@@slckb0y65 the Striker II Extreme also had a water block. Although the crappy adapters it came with sprung a leak and killed one of my 280s, fortunately it was replaced under warranty and I learned to be extremely cautious when assembling liquid cooling loops and only to use good quality components, which can be very costly. The amount of money I have in just fittings on my loop is absurd. Fortunately they can be reused Indefinitely.

@@RETROHardware My 2x SLI 280 system uses an I7 940. It was on average about 50% improvement over running E8400 overclocked to 3.2 ghz on 1600mhz fsb. Most single threaded games were always higher FPS, but multithreaded games being another world of performance and player experience. I found it quite shocking to say the least how much difference it makes. However I run it with HyperThreading off simply due to it sometimes being a decrease in performance on XP. Of course your Quad core is going to give something close to that smoothness, so the difference may not be so dramatic in some games, but the x58 platform will give at least huge improvement in FPS almost anywhere. And the SLI scaling may even be much better than you are seeing here.

@@VikingDudee With customs profiles, SLI works and is quite well scaled on game that doesn't support it (Metro Exodus / DCS / Arma...) but with only 2 cards (1070+) your CPU will bottleneck anyway. 3-SLI is just nonsense apart for hitting 1000Fps in Unreal tournament or Doom II. And using such old gen hardware on newer game doesn't worth it (the bill, heat, noise, performance ratio). a well scaled SLI can run your game with VSYNC, with 2 cards at mid power (55%) witch is good on powerdraw AND noise than a single à 100%. 😁

Dany Backstone you haven’t tried 4k gaming right? Yeah, even my Titan Xp is dog$hit for above console frame rates at 4k... Thankfully my 4x Fury kicks butt like nobody’s business! For instance, instead of a choppy 45 fps on the Titan my much cheaper Fury build does a mind blowing, silky smooth 100 fps in Crysis 3 at 4k Ultra! Now that games are about on par with the old 2013 Crysis 3 in terms of computational demands, it’s pretty relevant to many modern games (Fortnite runs a little easier, but haha, surprisingly not much like you would think it should...)

Set up's like this are what got me into PC gaming back when I was in high school, truly seems like golden age now days with the price of single gpus and basically no SLI support.
@soylentgreenb4 жыл бұрын
Golden age was the late 90's early 00's by far. Early 90's it became possible to get a cheap PC. 386DX40, then 486DX2-66, then pentium 166 really stuck around and just got cheaper. Pentium pro and pentium II were big setbacks on cost; but a year or two later AMD and intel were both sprinting towards 1 GHz and CPU prices were in complete freefall. In short order 3d accelerators became a thing, fillrates quadrupled, tripled, and doubled by the year, anti-aliasing, trilinear filtering, shaders, anisotropic filtering, T&L all arrived in short order. This mess of 3D graphics APIs shaked itself out to just openGL and direct 3D and most games became compatible with most hardware. Early 00's the best graphics card you could get cost $400, and that was expensive. You could get one 80% as nice for half the price or less. A good CPU cost around $200. Dennard scaling was still in effect and everything was still improving by 50% or so per year (40% improvement from clockspeed and 10% improvement from IPC was *average* in the 90's from year to year). 5 years separates the pentium 233 MMX and the 2 GHz athlon 64. 5 years separate the voodoo 2 and the legendary radeon 9700 pro. This GTX 280 comes from after the big slowdown. It had to be huge and it had to be hot to eek out some performance gains that might prompt someone to buy it. This was a 575 mm^2 die. A very high end graphics card like the geforce 256 DDR was just 140 mm^2; a geforce 2 ultra was 90 mm^2; a geforce 4 ti 4600 was 140 mm^2. Performance came from clever architecture and Dennard scaling, not being forced into using a massive die size and 200 W. That's what really drove up prices.

No joke, I’ve ran Crysis and then turned off the monitors so my PC kept me from freezing to death in the winter: 4x Fury crossfire with Threadripper 1950x at 4.2 GHz, which I also had running several handbrake batch file encodes at once while it was gamin like I normally do, overclocked it was using 1.7 kW of power thanks to 2x SuperNova 1300 PSUs feeding it, and why double PSUs? Well it’s my Halloween build in a vampire style casket so you gotta go duel 13’s, and also if I wanted to swap out my cooler for liquid nitrogen cooling I’d probably need that 2nd PSU anyways.... but yeah, it’s a great silent heater, and actually highly efficient at like 90w idle consumption which is actually like the same as what my monitor setup uses with 3x 4k monitors, so really pretty efficient just has insane performance at a relatively low cost with the GPUs costing like the same as a GTX 2070 for all 4x but with the performance of roughly 2x Titan RTX in most of my games. Very fun performance powerhouse, haha! Also keeps my feet warm if I run some P95 or Furmark to heat up my cold legs in the morning, haha!

To be fair, I'm not a fan of multi-gpu solutions unless there's no other way to reach desired performance. Had my fair share of SLI with 2x GTX Titans (very first genereation, Kepler architecture, 2688 shader processors), which at the time were probably the only kind of setup for comfortable performance at 2560x1600 (yes, I had 16:10, and would prefer this ratio to my current 16:9 anytime). So anyways, I had my fair share of compatibility issues, and would not recommend going SLI/CF on a regular basis, unless you already have an 2080Ti, but still not satisfied with performance.

Google it, it's very popular and easy to do as long as you're very careful because. You do need to cut away the CPU alignment on both sides of the socket or change the alignment slots on the CPU. It's very easy to do but one slip could wreck the MB. I used a single razor blade and slowly pushed it easily into the plastic. It actually cut a lot easier than I thought it would. Enjoy...
