Ashed Tinder, Rudiger Roll, and Grip for the Hand Drill... Ashed Tinder- I decided to use Jute this time because it's been a long time since I've worked with it. I took about 2 feet of it, saturated it with ashes, did a quick solar ignition with the wallet Fresnel Lens,and used it as the coal to ignite my Pine Needles Tinder Bundle. Lot's of Ashed tinder info along the way. 2) Then our friend the Rudiger Roll. I broke down about a foot of Jute into fiber and explained and demonstrated the technique. 3) Lastly, Hand Drill Grippage... hands coated with wood ashes. I think they provide about 3 times more grip than spit alone. LOL!!! It took me 3 sets and about 8 tries to finally get an ember on this very humid day. I only show the highlights not all the fails. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks! *** 3 PLAYLISTS THAT RELATE TO THE 3 TECHNIQUES WITHIN: Ashed Tinder... I discovered this revolutionary fire technique and it changes everything! kzbin.info/aero/PLkoXX8XsMW3mlY3P6FW8UH7_q1sY_xssX Rudiger Rolling kzbin.info/aero/PLkoXX8XsMW3kLMA7kY_LznhzK5nOrA3Wd Hand Drill Friction Fire kzbin.info/aero/PLkoXX8XsMW3nvAanTlr7IhGt1Kjk3SNzp

David you made me feel better. This weekend we did a Frontiersman Lock in and I showed them the Rugerroll and the boys did great with it. I tried 15 bow drill sets and none could get a fire going. I stopped when I got smoke and handed it off to the next guy that wanted tto try it. It's tough. Thanks for your great videos. Mark Jones (the Royal Rangers have heard your name)

Hi David, over in the UK I'm trying to go from nothing to making an iron knife, 100% natural, copying people like the Primitive Technology guy. Luckily I have all the local resources necessary to do so, but none of it can happen without fire. So I practice mullein hand drill every day to keep my hands hardened up, but perhaps only acheive an ember 10% of the time, of course when I really need one, it takes hours, when I don't, a few minutes. It can get disheartening, not understanding the many factors involved and which one isn't quite right. It's a pleasure to come inside with frustrated mind and burning hands and watch your videos, always a boost when I need one. Thanks for your efforts in explaining as much as can be explained. Richard

If you can't dry your hand drill set any more than what you're using, go bow drill and use drying cycles. See my playlist on drying cycles. Thanks!

Every day carry a Bic, ferro rod, and fresnel lens. Flint and steel has no burning affect on ashed materials.

Hello! I have seen several of your videos and am happy to have learned about these fire making methods of course. My question is: what is it about ashes or rust that makes it heat up so much with friction? Why does it work? mp
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
Friction and chemical reaction, I think!

This is amazing, but what is the wood ash actually doing? I had the the same question with the rust in another of these videos. Is it to supply some chemical? (Oxygen maybe?)
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
No scientist has studied it. It looks to me like friction and chemical reaction.

I suspect that your Ashed Tinder technique is in effect spreading millions of tiny bits of charcoal throughout the tinder. Much like the full size charcoal these tiny bits ignite easily and hold heat longer so as to ignite the fresh tender and other nearby micro briquettes. It would be interesting to see how charcoal cloth (cotton impregnated with finely crushed charcoal briquet) compares to ashed cloth and char cloth.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl6 жыл бұрын
Nope... bits of char interfere with the process. Please check out the 60 videos in my Rudiger Roll Playlist.

David have you ever used fungus to start a fire ??
@DavidWestBgood2ppl6 жыл бұрын
Yes but how do you ignite your fungus. Lots of videos showing people ferro rod igniting fungus, building it into a big ember, then igniting tinder. That doesn't makes sense... since the ferro rod would have ignited the tinder without the fungus.
