3 Ways To Customize the Modifier Keys On a Mac

Excellent. I've used the Karabiner just to turn the "." of the numeric keyboard into a "," that was so helpful to me. But having somehow to customize keys can help us in a variety of ways. So glad I've found that!

I’ve been using karabiner now for about a week and am happier because of it. A bit of a learning curve to program, but once done is a heck of a time saver. Between this and the Alt-Tab program, I’m more productive than with my Windows machine. It was such a bummer when initially switching from PC to Mac to not have some of these native key mappings, but I’m sufficiently happy now with these two programs running. I’m exploring more key mapping configurations every day to help my productivity and it’s a cool learning experience all at the same time. I’m not a coder or anything but piggy backing on other peoples custom modifications and saving each iteration in a file has been a journey to say the least. I hope these programs help other new MacOS users!

I've been using Karabiner for a few years now. I've remapped quite a number of the keys on my Magic Keyboard and I get a lot of mileage on this short, non Numeric Keypad keyboard... basically remapping the Caps Lock key to Return, Left Command (not held down) to Delete, adding the full number of F keys instead of just F1 - F12 and Arrow keys on the left side of my keyboard, etc.

Hi. I´ve been using karabiner app to remap caps lock to cmd + alt + cntl + shift and it was working great. Al of the suden it stop working, now caps Lock it´s just caps luck I have deleted the action or the thing you download and redownloaded it and still nothing. Anythoughts. It´s seems to be remaping backspace or erase for some reasone

Capitán! I was so hoping this would work for me. I am desperate to have a control key on the right side of the keyboard. Well, I did the steps in System Settings. And it didn't work in a terminal window. I changed option for control and control for option. But when I use TMUX in a terminal window, the changes didn't go through. They do go through when using other applications (gmail...) I'm thinking about trying the Karabeener. Anyhow, hope all is well at your end!

While a good suggestion to keep modifier keys the same going from Windows to MacOS, when our company forced us onto PCs the first thing I did was install an app that allowed me to remap the Cmd/Ctrl keys to the Mac standard as Windows requires some real finger gymnastics to function, whereas MacOs's mapping just flows with the curve of your fingers.

When I get a Mac mini (which will be connected to a KVM switch) I’m thinking of putting stickers on the windows keyboard so that I know what the keys I am most likely to need do under Mac OS (and I might set the keyboard so that the function keys behave as function keys by default, otherwise I may not even be able to use the function keys if I need to)

I want to change the function of my right shift key (changed with the last OS and to go back to the default), but Ventura 13 doesn't have these Mission Control settings, and Shift doesn't show as a Modifier key in keyboard shortcuts - what do I do?

Hey so I was having the same issue that the app was locked and I also couldn't uninstalled it. You have to open the app and Under the "Misc" tab there is going to have a option to Uninstall the app. Its going to ask for your log in info but after that is going to uninstall itself.

What do you mean, exactly, why "doesn't seem to work." What are you doing (steps) and what happens that isn't right?

@@macmost so the steps work correctly for the integrated Macbook keyboard, and they work for a Mac external keyboard, however - they do not work for an external HP Omen mechanical keyboard. The changes save, but have no effect. I've searched far and wide, and the only potential reason I've found is "N Key Rollover"? There is no software running in the background (no keyboard OEM software, no Karabiner elements, etc.). I'm befuddled.

Yes, it has been around for a long time and many people use it. Of course it needs access to your keyboard input as how else would it be able to work?

@@macmost It certainly raises suspicion; they don't indicate at all that the keyboard "monitoring" is necessary; its fairly clearly indicated as an option. Its only when it doesn't work that the suspicion arises that its mandatory; they don't provide any obvious assurance that what they are asking for isn't a record of everything typed on the keyboard to be sent to them (as opposed to as you state - obviously the App. needs access) - in fact it reads like thats exactly what they are asking for. Perhaps they were incompetent at basic English but it could be seen as sophisticated manipulation i.e. get the user eager to utilize it but only after numerous efforts (having rejected the "monitor" apparent option) and while they are perhaps frustrated the "monitor" option is selected.

But I will say for others that Karabiner has been around for a long time, is widely used, and is open source so there is no way to hide nefarious code (one of the best things about open source). @@macmost Yes, thank you; the background info. invites confidence - unlike what appears with the basic download. It has turned my Magic keyboard into a "grown ups" one with a forward delete key. Keys for Sleep and Turn off display would be nice but it looks like it would take hours of study to even find out if either are possible; I somehow found one called al_clock which appears to start Sleep - but not for long.

I'm going to get my first Mac in a few weeks, and I'm quite worried about how would I be able to live without - not one or two, but - 6 keys: insert, delete, pgup, pgdown, home, end. How can anyone live without them??? How can a computer manufacturer decide to make computers without having these keys?? I plan to map the F11 and F12 keys to work like two of these, but can't even decide what two, I'll miss all six!

If you get a desktop Mac with the large keyboard it has Forward Delete, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down. Or, you could use the smaller keyboard and just learn the key combos for those. But note that most Mac users, including myself, get along just fine without any of these.

@@macmost It'll be a Macbook. I already use them in key combos (shift+ins, ctrl+ins, ctrl+del, shift+home, shift+end, ctrl+pgup, and even ctrl+shift+pgup...) 3 or 4 key combos don't sound good to me. But if you guys can work with that keyboard, maybe I also could.

I have been an apple user/fan since the 80s starting with the apple II but I also use lots of other systems such as Sun, SGI, Cray, Dec and a ton of others and they all have a standard keyboard. Apple goes out of their way to be different just for the sake of being different, they need to get their head out of their rear-end and start doing things in a standard way like everyone else does it. I suggest they start by dropping their keyboard and going with the standard 101/102 PC keyboard and drop the stupid command key and windows needs to drop their silly windows key.

Don't hold your breath. Apple is among the largest companies (by market cap) in the entire world. If they were going to change their keyboard standard for their Macintosh computers it would have happened back in the 1990s when the company was teetering on the brink of survival and their market share was shrinking. I'd say Apple's head is exactly where it belongs: Increasing shareholder value and not worrying about what a few hardboiled tech nerds think about the Mac keyboard. I use a lot of different systems, too, and using a single keyboard with any of them is not a problem once you set up it up within each system. Using a different keyboard with slightly different layouts isn't an issue either unless your muscle memory is really locked into just one and you suddenly need to get work done on another.
