We need to make a trip line but good to see all the ideas out there. Anchoring has been our biggest stress - in a couple weeks are posting our video about the time that we had to ABANDON the boat anchor! Sailing has been a huge learning curve so far as we start our journey around the world and videos like this are a great help!

The problem with such a setup is that if you anchor in an area where the current and/or wind shifts dramatically then the seizing (string, cable-ties, wire, et cetera) will let loose, allowing your anchor to pop out of the bottom and NOT reset. A better method is to tie another line (a bit longer than the water's depth) with a float on it to the head of the anchor. Then, if your anchor gets fouled by rocks (or whatever) you can pull the anchor out by that secondary line.

I fish cook inlet with a breakaway everyday and it has some of the strongest currents in the world. The breakaway only let's loose unintentionally if you dont maintain it. Every few weeks you just redo it. That's all. I'm anchoring in 300 plus feet at times so this is the only way.
@wolfvolke14465 жыл бұрын
been there done that! i now use an anchor that has a slot cut the entire length of the shank-just put a shackle on it tie the rope to the shackle and when you motor up the anchor the shackle moves from the back to the front of the anchor.
@holdengts86206 жыл бұрын
Ive seen this used on a 25ft boat but using 2 thick cable ties. Held well in 3-4m swells. Even seen it get stuck and how he got it out, with the thick cable ties it does take a bit of force to snap em. Carry spares so you can keep fishing.

I’m still unsure about this method of having a release point/break away point on my anchor , if anchoring in a bay during bad weather would this method have potential to de-anchor me if winds /tides change?
@SeamusButler9 ай бұрын
Totally agree, if you are vertical over a anchor , it should pull out in 99% of cases, you could drop a ring and line down to try and trip it or tie a fender to the rode and come back to it, the thought of a cable tie being responsible for the horizontal pull on the anchor doesn't sit well with me.

Its all fun and games untill you break your cordage in a storm and pull anchor. These methods are fine for day anchoring or small boats. I couldn't sleep easy knowing that rig is at then end of my chain at night.
@UguysRnuts7 жыл бұрын
A competent sailor will set the anchor and tackle for the conditions expected. It's not a 'set it and forget it' situation. Not being able to retrieve ones anchor because it's fouled can be just as dangerous as one that drags.

That's how we anchor on or around rocks, wrecks, or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. First time I anchored along the CBBT, I lost a brand new Fortress anchor. I spent over an hour trying to free it. After that I bought a wreck anchor (made from rebar) and which is made to be shackled at the bottom and zip tied at the top, as you demonstrated.
@TAFishing4 жыл бұрын
I have heard that as well,yet every small boat day angler I know does one of those tripping methods. If a handful are paranoid about the anchor tripping in the dark why don't they set the anchor spot on their GPS to go off if the boat drags a few feet ?? All the wreck boats I know use grapnels and trips for rough ground fishing.

I thank you for your demonstration. Would you recommend this for over night anchoring? The sailboat I purchased has an anchor rigged as you suggest. It’s secured with strap ties. That is fine for a lunch anchor where you will be in one spot for no more than a couple three hours. If you're trying to anchor say overnight, when the tide changes the string or zip tie is almost guarantee to break and thus pull your anchor up and leave you adrift with a dragging anchor. The hole on the fulcrum point of the anchor is actually there to add a second line to. That way you can use it to trip the anchor if it gets snagged. Most cruisers that do this will put a float or something like that on the end of the trip line so it can be easily retrieved if you snag your anchor. Otherwise you just retrieve it when you retrieve your anchor in the morning.
@ultimatejay Жыл бұрын
if you know your anchoring overnight you just add another shackle in place of the zip ties and then remove it when fishing during the day.,

First let me say thank you for the time and effort you put into the video. Second i know NOTHING about sailing. With that in mind,.... I love this idea but my concern is if the waves start kicking up and it snaps the zip tie. Is that possible? If so... now at the worst possible time, when you want the most bite from your anchor, your pulling from the worst spot on the anchor. Again, I'm looking to learn, not criticizing your method. Would the "trip line" method be better on the rare rough water conditions?

If you are overnighting stick a shackle in it. My father did this for decades and saved his anchor at least half a dozen times.
