Great tips! Another note for others to keep in mind: these methods will not work on an xlsb file where the internal files are encoded in binary as opposed to XML. This is also a good way for others to produce a spreadsheet that is protected from these methods

Thanks for sharing that tip 👍. It is certainly true they don't work on xlsb files. The work around for this though, is to save the file as xlsx, perform the hack, and then re-save as xlsb. Probably the only way to completely prevent any of these methods working is to add a file open password so that the file is encrypted.

Number 3 was the rescue for me. I was testing out the security of workbook by trying random words, lo and behold i accidentally changed it to a random bunch of letters with no rhyme or reason lol. I tested it on one sheet and it worked. Just another 157 sheets to go!!! Thanks for the help dude.

Hi Arnold, this is a great question as you can actually modify the code fairly easily to do the whole workbook. You do this by placing the whole code (after On Error Resume Next) inside a loop that goes to every sheet. Add the code 'For each oSheet in Activeworkbook.Sheets' before For i = 65 To 66, replace the word Activesheet with oSheet wherever it appears and add Next oSheet at the end of the code before End Sub. That should loop through the whole workbook......but be warned, it might take a long time or even crash your PC if there are too many passwords and sheets.

Try searching the workbook.xml file. It might be workbook structure protection that's been used. As for additional folders, my example was a very simple spreadsheet so in the real world there will usually be more folders anyway.

Hello, I am actually getting the same issue. I am using WinZip to compress the file. One I remove the content protect line from the wordpad, change the document back to .xlsx type, and open the file, I get either the file is corrupted or the sheets themselves are empty. As if the content was cleared. Have you guys dealt with something like this before?

Hi Wayne, you can remove workbook structure protection using method 3 on the workbook.xml file within the zip package. File open passwords are encrypted so much more tricky.....not sure how to do it myself but my guess is it will require decryption software of some sort. Glad the video was useful.

For Workbook Open protected sheets, I did some Internet research and basically you need a brute force cracking program to do the job if the password is set on opening the workbook. I found this site: www.isunshare.com/excel-password-genius/ which looks pretty professional and reliable. $20 for the basic version seems pretty reasonable. I don't know that I will have very many instances of needing such a tool, but it is nice to know it is out there. So.. thought I would share it with you and your site. Thanks again for getting me interested in this topic. Always nice to have a solution when a client comes calling. Thumbs up! I have a password on the entire "Workbook" which was added using File>Info>Protect Workbook>Encrypt with Password The solution which you have shared only works for the "Worksheet" Passwords Is there a way to retrieve the password for the "Workbook" When I renamed the .xlsx file to .zip and opened, it shows me 1 folder named: "[6] DataSpaces" and 2 files named: EncryptedPackage and EncryptionInfo. When I do method 3 in Excel on my mac, the file is corrupt "The workbook cannot be opened or repaired by Microsoft Excel because it is corrupt." I don't get why it seems to work for some people and not others, since this and similar methods have never worked on my mac. I'm testing method 2, to see if it works. Right now it's running for a few minutes on my test sheet with a simple password to see if I can try it on a more complex worksheet. Thanks for the video.

I don't have a Mac to test this on, but my guess is that the file system might be different for the Mac version of Excel. Method 3 relies on the fact that xlsx and xlsm files are really zip files disguised. If changing to a zip extension leaves you with a corrupt file this suggests that some container other than zip might be used for Excel Mac.

Hi - I have an .xlsx file. It has 5 sheets, but I can only see two. The second of these two pages has the symbol of a padlock. I can edit some fields in the first page (once I enable editing), which returns a result and I can save the edited document. I have tried all three of your methods and none works - in method 3, none of the sheets have the word 'protect' in them and there is nothing (that I can see) that relates to protection / a password - do you have any suggestions?

This isn't what I'd expect from a xlsx file. I assume you've tried clicking Format on the Home ribbon and selecting unprotect sheet - it might simply not have a password. Failing that, some other viewer have commented that you can open the file in google sheets online and save back as xlsx to remove passwords. Unfortunately it also removes Excel only content and destroys some formatting, but it does work to remove passwords. Perhaps give that a go if all else fails.

I ran another VB routine that is quite commonly quoted online and that produced a possible password of AAAAAAAAA - which did not work - this sort of approach has worked in the past (for different spreadhseets). I was able to get what I need from Google Sheets (thank you for pointing me towards that), but I am still interested in trying to get an Excel based solution - Happy to send you the file if you want to have a crack.

I have an XLS BIFF8 excel 97-2003 file, encripted and it seams that also has an RMS sort of protection, when you opened the file with the software it was created 3 spreadsheets were shown, but with any other version the 2nd and 3rd sheets are not shown, and they are not hidden or very hidden, you can´t even see them on the visual basic GUI or in the zip file, it looks like another file structure diferent from what you would see in a xlsx file. I don´t remember if I created the file with office 2007 or 2003 version because now I dont have the program. I have the password but, is there any way to remove that RMS protection? it could be protected with the Live ID option or something like that but now Microsoft finished that service, I read a lot of posts and it seams that thousands of people have this same problem. is it possible to recover the information from the pages that are not shown and are protected with this method? I read in a microsoft page that with the RMS protection the information protected within the file is alocated in a stream separated from the rest not protected. is there something I can do?

options 1 and 2 do not work so trying option 3 however when I get to the "right click edit xml" it opens in word and does not show the same screen as yours. Its show a ton of centent from the page. Options?

Use the Windows file explorer and 'open with' rather than edit xml. That way you can use notepad as shown in the video 👍

I'm currently testing some software that will do this cutt.ly/AccentEXCEL . I'll do a full review in due course but it definitely does the job.... quickly for simple passwords but be prepared to leave your computer on a while if you have a complex password. They have a few other products for password recovery too.

I was trying to follow the zip extension method.. When I open the folder named "worksheets", all my worksheets are listed with bin extensions instead of xml extensions. Apart from this problem, three more files and one extra folder are found. sheet1, sheet2 and sheet3 are with bin extensions. BinaryIndex1, BinaryIndex2 and BinaryIndex3 - three more files also appear along with an folder named _rels. If I could attach a screenshot, it would be easier. How can I solve the bin extensions issue?

your file is saved as an xlsb file (Excel Binary File). Re-save it as an xlsx file and you should be good to go with the zip method 👍

I tried method 3 by changing the file extension to zip but I got the following message when I tried to extract it by 7-zip: Cannot open the file as [zip] archive The file is open as a [compound] file Are there any solutions to fix it? By the way, the file I received was an excel 97-2003 xls version and I used Excel 2007. Thank you

Method 3 is only for xlsx and xlsm files as xls is an older file type but based on zip. Method 2 should work for you though.
