I had a Wishon Golf 16° driver laying around so i put a stiff shaft cut to 44.5" in it 😆 I call it my Big 3 wood and use it to tee off on long holes at my favorite executive course. A 400cc 3 wood is a beast, and im making more out of 14° and 16° 460cc Ping Rhapsody drivers 😅

Great video. Definitely Driver with a 3 wood shaft is more accurate. Increased efficiency on strike with a shorter shaft.

A shorter driver is always better than a long 3 wood. I will say that you are the only person I've seen do this sort of test where you actually mentioned needing to make other changes besides just shortening or lengthening the shaft. It's not that simple. So often guys say they cut down their driver and it didn't work. Well, yeah, because you change several other factors. Not to mention we don't know how bad your swing was to begin with. Cutting 2 inches off your driver will not take a guy who misses 14 fairways a round with driver and turn him into a 12 of 14 guy. What your test showed is what I have typically found in that shortening the driver costs swing speed but improves launch conditions so little if any distance is lost. Although I rarely go below 44 inches. Sometimes the spin does get too low and additional loft is needed or a slightly heavier shaft but when all is said and done I've never used a shorter driver, say between 44" and 44.75" when fitted properly or built one for someone who did not improve their fairways hit or improve their playable drive counts and most improved average distance. And, to be fair, all of your final drives with the short driver were playable and farther down the fairway. The long 3 wood would be a waste of time and money for pretty much everyone.

I cut an inch off my driver shaft and the consistency is incredible now. Also didn’t see any appreciable distance loss which was an added bonus.

I use a 3 wood shaft in my sim 2 driver because my driver shaft broke and had a m1 3 wood laying around. I’m never going back. I absolutely love hitting fairways for once in my life. My slice virtually disappeared. If you slice I 100% recommend trying a 3 wood shaft in the driver idk the science behind it but it worked for me on accident lol.

I've already been playing around with this myself. Cut my wife's old 12deg Ping G10 down 4-5" for my 12yo son, and after trying it on a simulator, I'm thinking about borrowing it for tighter courses where I need to be in the fairway. Drop the 3w and hybrid for the short, high lofted driver and a 5w.

I read somewhere that it might be a bit of a misconception for Ams to play 3w off the tee as a "fairway finder" and as long as it isn't distance limited you are better off hitting driver due to dispersions.

We use a stock standard Taylor Made BRNR 13.5° mini driver off the tee and off the fairway, no issues (no driver, 3 or 5 wood required). It's shorter, kinda, but still less walking than our zig-zagging driver & 3 wood playing buddies.

I've played around with this too. I wanted a consistent go to on tighter holes around 350 yards or less. I actually went as far as to shorten my 3 metal an inch and a half. At the end of the day my ol' reliable 4 utility iron (Cobra) is still my most consistent fairway finder. I get it out there around 215 which on a 315 par four leaves me a wedge from the fairway. I like my chances for par from there. The other advantages to the Cobra King 4 utility is adjustability and I can hit it low into the wind with a nice draw. (Would need an exorcism to cut it but I've learned to live with that). Over all I stuck with the girl I brought to the dance but loved the video! As always!!!

I got a new shaft that I cut down an inch and went down a stiffness in my driver as well as it was 12g lighter than my stock shaft. My drives were phenomenal once I got used to it. Much better distance and consistency overall because I kept hitting the face. Shaft felt a little whippier but I added 16g to the head so I knew it would. But once I got used to the swing timing and swingweight of the new shaft, I felt great. Not to mention I don't think the 60g Stiff was right for me so now my driver doesn't tire me out as much to hit on the sim compared to the 60g stiff. It feels much lighter and easier to pull back and swing through with.

What is that cool plastic thing slid on the end of that yard stick at 5:17 time stamp? Do you sell these? I tried the gate hinge you suggested on another video, but I couldn’t find one that was tight and would hold the angle. They were all too floppy and it was too hard to get it to work. I went back to setting the club on the ground and sliding the ruler down the back of the shaft until it touched the ground. A video on club measuring would be cool!!

I found the FW shaft with a driver head ok, but did not like the feel torque felt wrong head was too flexy even with a XS shaft. 😮. In the end I tipped a stiff 45.5" shaft too 44." These worked great no drop in distance accuracy good, yes lots of tape needed, driver tipped read C6 10 grams to make D0. Very pleased with the shorter driver. My teenage son has my old XR16 driver now with a 45g A flex C9 weiyht 44.5" fantastic kick point. Goes 20 yards further now than it did with a XS 65grm.

I've been playing an older Titleist driver with the shorter shaft for a couple of seasons. My Garmin golf data shows this is now my most accurate club but I am sacrificing a bit of distance off the tee, something I'm more than happy to do as I play on a tight tree lined undulating course. I also use a matching 3 wood with a shorter shaft with similar results. The only issue is launching off the deck. I have tried adjusting the sleeve's lie and loft but don't really seen much difference. What do I need to do to increase launch with this club?
@EFGMC23 күн бұрын
It's going to be a matter of swing change or getting a different driver head if the flight is too low right now.

I have a question about the AI smoke mini driver. im a senior, 71 years young. And ordered this club with a reg shaft. the trackman io I go to shows the swing speed to be under 80 mph. Is this due to the shorter shaft? Should I go to a senior shaft? and, do i order a driver shaft cut down to this length. or is this actually a 3 wood shaft? thanks, enjoy your videos. Rstots, MI
@EFGMC15 күн бұрын
If you have issues with getting the ball up and have fade tendencies I would look at the softer shaft. More important to have the right weight which should be based off your other clubs in the bag. Not really such a thing as a 3 wood shaft these days, just shafts and heavier weights that would be used in a fw.

Question about swing weight but for irons. If I have half an inch long Mizuno Pro 245 irons that come out to D7 swing weights, should I consider counter balancing or something to bring them back down? Or is that swing weight less problematic than I am making it? I was kind of surprised they had that high of swing weights given their standard is D2 and I am using a midsize grip.

Analytics gurus, like Mark Brodie in “Every Shot Counts” preaches not to give up the driver off the tee. A 3W is designed to be hit off the fairway, and with a smaller head, harder to hit off the tee and doesn’t go as far. So, if the goal is to hit the fairway, since the driver is bigger, designed to hit off a tee you should go with the driver. But, some women’s drivers, like the Cobra Air X, has the same size driver head, but with a shorter shaft and a 3W loft (15°). So … should a women’s driver with a 3W loft and shaft become your 3W? I am looking for a good Cobra ladies Air X to experiment. As I am a lefty, it’s like searching for a unicorn. Or … maybe you could? 😊
