Children mimic what the adults around them say, you know that working in a preschool and being around so many young children. I'm pretty sure you know children are always listening and they will repeat what they hear rather they really understand it or not. I suppose my comment wasn't necessary though, I was just truly interested in if the people who say Rue is above average are above average are around children a lot and understand how children grow and develop because most three year olds I know are on par with Rue. If he could read and write or knew some basic math or similar things, I could understand. From my stand point, Rue is doing what all children do, and coping what those around him say.
