Glad i found this, i was going to send them a 1903 Springfield to rebarrel in 280 Ackley Improved... Not anymore, i will give Pac-Nor a try. That will be a wonderful rifle when you are done, 35 Whelen is a heck of cartridge and the Mauser is a wonderful rifle.

Looks like the 35 Whelen is finally getting it just place in the hunting community especially when it comes to the larger deer ,bear species at reasonable hunting distances. Yes ammunition in the 35 is a bit more costly than the 30-06 but not as bad as a 300 Weatherby. It is just about on par with the 300 Winchester for ammunition price.

I had one built last season and it’s all I hunt with now . Remington 700 action , Wilson stainless barrel with a 1-12 twist . McMillan stock , trigger tech trigger . I run a vortex viper hs 2.5x10 x 44 She weighs 8.6 pounds with scope on and a full mag . I’ve shot a 6x6 bull elk with it and a whitetail so far and man does it put the smack down on game . I’m shooting nosler custom loaded with 225 accubonds leaving the muzzle at 2750..

yes I went with 1:12 twist as well, and yes this heavy barrel makes this rifle heavy but it's managable

@@enigmasunshine4554I am going to shave a few more ounces off mine by fluting the bolt and barrel . corlane sporting goods built mine . They build Rocky Mountain rifles and are great at building rifles

I have a nice load for my Whelen for which I use IMR 4064 powder and a 225 grain Sierra Game King SPboattail bullet with an average muzzle velocity of 2816 fps. This load is less than maximum but it is very accurate. I like Sierra bullets because they have been making quality bullets since before I was born and I'm an old man now. To achieve the same velocity with a 225 grain bullet in my .338 Win. mag I have to use 15 grains more powder.

Thank you for sharing. Doesn’t sound like they need the business. I’ve been looking at them and a few others for my current project.

I tried to use a Ruger M77/270 to build a .35 Whelen. The magazine would not hold the 35 Whelen ammo. However I did purchase a Shilen barrel in .284 diameter and had a .275 Rigby rifle built. Very happy with the results. Allen at Valley Gun Service in Monte Vista, Colorado did a wonderful job. He installed express sights for me. I wanted a quarter rib but the cost was more than I wanted to pay.

Too busy to make more money? Wow. Looks like they really poorly clamped that barrel and didn't take the time to use Kroil or some other penetrant to loosen that barrel. Had too many others waiting I guess. As an fyi, there is a quality gunsmith in Cottage Grove Oregon who rebores that great caliber along with many others. I have an 06 Husqvarna taken up to 9.3x62 by Jesse. He did a great job and it is very accurate. He would never mark a barrel. His website is JES rebore. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the project and getting those iron sights back on.

Yes I have read about him in last couple of months, everybody talks nice about him,. Husqvarna also makes good rifles, and yes I will not recommend Mcgowen to anyone.

Allen at Valley Gun Service in Monte Vista, Colorado has done all the work I've had done and he does a very good job. Get in early because he and his helper are very busy and the wait can be long.

I think I will buy a CVA single shot 35 Whelen , I had a perfect rifle in 3006 that was shot out . Be very careful if shipping guns through Canada all my bolts & scopes were stolen.

I had my whelen barrel made by McGowen as well and the throat is almost twice as long as SAAMI spec. It’s been a nightmare to work up a load. Just sent it to a gunsmith get rechambered ti shorten the throat/freebore

As far as your old barrel it's a shame they marred it up but those barrels are a dime a dozen. The gunsmith I use has a 55 gallon drum in which he puts old barrels and when it's full they go to the metal scrap yard.

I have a few McGowen barrels, all of them shoot lights out with handloads. I've had nothing but amazing experiences with McGowen. So it looks like you ordered the incorrect contour barrel (or at least in the shank area). Also you expected to have someone fit a threaded shouldered barrel to a receiver and have them headspace it.. Without leaving any scratches!? I find that amusing.. This is why I use Remage barrels, Remington 783s, or Savage's savages for my custom builds. All you need is a barrel nut wrench and a go gauge to fit/headspace the barrel yourself. I have a beast of a 35 Whelen rifle, 31" barrel, SS Cryotreated, HBN coated 250gr Speer HotCors at 3,010fps/5,000ft.lbs.

What a crappy job they did. For the money you spend I would have used a 700 action instead of an old cock on close military surplus action.

@@ballistic_hipster They are building way tougher but the cock on close to my sucks. I just sold off all my Bubba Springfield and enfield rifles. They are too ruff of opening and closing actions imo. I want a smooth updated action the cocks on open instead of close. I still have many all original of the above models. Imo its a crime to Bubba them
