Gotta admit, I'm sitting here watching this because my home is a mess, I want to clean it, but I'm too tired. Gonna pause you - set a timer, do 6mins in each room, then come back to watch the rest of it as a reward! Anyone else reading this, who has cleaning to do you really, really don't feel like - maybe you could join me? Set a timer, 2mins even, and get started. We CAN do it! 💕💪😊

Oh I’ve been there. I used to have 10 cups around me in my sitting room, dreading the thought of putting them in the dishwasher. So in the tv ads I took a tray and put all the dishes on the tray. The next ad I brought the tray to the kitchen. ….. some old woman on the internet said that’s how you start. I’m hoping this helps someone to just start. 😅 A couple of years and 2000 KZbin videos later, I’m actually tidy 😮

Haha if I have no motivation, it's 6 minutes for me too! If I'm getting family members in on it, it's 11 minutes and if I have a little time, I do 21 minutes. My littles also say "add one on for luck!"

One of the things I do is always “leave the room better than how you found it.” So if I walk into a room to do something, I’ll also clean one thing up. It could be simple like throwing a piece of trash away, putting a book back on a shelf, or even just placing a pen back in a drawer. It gets you in the right mindset and encourages you to be tidier the next time you use those items.

Adding to the laundry part...at night try to put your (or family) clothes especially that you wore and are decently still clean on a hanger in a designated spot for a second wearing. We wash too much stuff too soon. Just keep them separate from the unworn washed clothes. It makes a world of difference.

These are all great tips :-) Something my husband and I have been doing for over 20 years is “don’t go up and down the stairs without taking something with you.” There’s always something upstairs that belongs downstairs and there’s always something downstairs that belongs upstairs. We used to have baskets at the top and bottom of the stairs to put the upstairs or downstairs things in and we would empty that basket or carry the basket as we went. Now it’s just the two of us in the house so there’s less but I still have a basket at the bottom of the stairs.

I do the same with going down to the landing or basement, is there something that needs to go to either of those two spaceship. On the way back I will bring with me items that need to be restocked in the bathroom/kitchen e.g. water or toilet paper.

My husband and I worked in a busy Italian restaurant in college, we had a work phrase "Full hands in, full hands out" (through the kitchen door). Same idea as putting things where they go in a home and always getting something done as you go through the movements of the day. I did a sock bin on the stairs when kids were little. It was a sanity saver.

Yes! I have secret highways of things on their way from one room to another. I might have a dirty mug in the livingroom which needs to go to the kitchen - so when I leave the living room it comes out with me, but if I'm not going all the way to the kichen sink, it may sit in the hall for a bit, then next time I'm going from hall to kitchen I pick it up again and take it with me. [Lol - it sounds like I live in a massive house. I really don't!!]

Yes! This is a habit I learned from my parents. It's called "While You're Up." We were never allowed to just walk past something like a full trash can, folded laundry to go upstairs, a dirty dish/glass, etc. Leaving the room? Take this with you. Oh and on your way back, check the dog's water bowl and bring snacks. Ten minutes ago, I set something at the bottom of the stairs for next time someone goes up.

I call this “No wasted trips.” Don’t waste a trip going upstairs without taking something with you that belongs upstairs. Same for going downstairs.

Something you said in a previous video really struck me. You said you used to collapse cardboard packaging, then it would sit round for ages. Then one day you timed how long it took you to take it to where it needed to be (e.g. your car / the garage/ the recycling bin) and it took less then 40seconds. That really struck me. For me, it might be something like I'll fold up some sheets after they've dried, then old me would put them on the side to put away "later". And later would never come, and they'd still be there, collecting dust. So now when I catch myself wanting to stop a task like that just a little bit before I've finished. I start counting and carry on. In the case of sheets it would be bend down, pull out the container I keep bedding in from under the bed, open it, put the sheets in, close it, and slide it back under the bed. Often I don't even get to 20. And yet it feels soooooo much better. And I'm not spending the rest of the week thinking "I really should put those sheets away!" Thank you for motivating me! 💪💕😃

When it comes to the kitchen bin I use the hack that janitorial/housekeeping staff in schools, hospitals etc. often use which is to place extra bin bags at the bottom of the bin so as soon as I take a full bag out it takes less than 30 seconds to put in a new bag. It really does make a difference, at least for me it has.

Mom always said, "A place for everything and everything in it's place." I'm finally getting organized and understand what Mom meant. So much easier to put things away when you have a place to put them. Okay, you convinced me. I'm going to keep my indoor shoes by the back door and my outside shoes on the patio. After breakfast, I take my dog outside and water my plants. I have no plants on the inside of my house. My patio is always muddy and (five minute rule), before I water, I sweep up the dried mud from yesterday's watering. I'm finally getting a handle on it, but I have a long way to go. I was just thinking tonight that I have no control over what my dog tracks into my house, but I do have control over myself.

One of our cats is very sensitive to noises and will hide when we come in until we take our shoes off. I wear slippers inside the house and when I’m going out I slipped into my outside shoes. And I leave the slippers Right next to the door. And as soon as I come in I do the same thing in reverse.

In addition to putting things away, I’ve also taken the time to note what doesn’t get put away and decide if it needs a more convenient home. I used to lose my sunglasses all the time - leave them in one of the cars, a purse, the house, etc. Then I decided the sunglasses were always coming in with me and hanging on the same hook as my keys. Then it became habit to always have them when I left the house, even sometimes at night 😅

I don't have a lot of clutter. My biggest problem is not putting things away when I'm done with them. Your videos have been a great help for this problem. I don't wear shoes inside because I can't stand having shoes on for longer than I need to. When I was growing up, my mom had a sign at the door to remove shoes. But I grew up on an island and all we kids wore (except for school) was zoris (flip flops) so that was an easy on and off. My mom kept a tidy house and it was always company ready because she always put things back where they belonged. I aspire to be like that.

My dad NEVER took his shoes off and living in MN it meant that I'd end end up stepping in slush and dirt in the winter. Door mats don't catch it all. So I've always loved shoes off at the door. When my spouse and I were in the Army we weren't officially "home" at the end of the day UNTIL our boots were off. So naturally, we pulled them off immediately 😅 Now? Especially with kids, I'm a die-hard shoes-off-at-the-front-door rule-bug. It makes some of our friends laugh because we're the only ones in our various friend groups who insist on leaving shoes at the door. Now that my husband is a nurse he doesn't even bring his shoes IN THE HOUSE unless it's raining outside!

As far as the shoes in the house thing, I always take my rubber yard boots in the downstairs stairwell. In the winter my yard becomes a muddy mess from the rain, snow and driving our tractor to feed livestock. I definitely don't want all that muck in my carpeted living space. I also have a set of pants & a hoodie for feeding time along with gloves, headlamps & a bright yellow rain suit by my yard boots. Keeping it all downstairs and together really helps keep dirt, mud & hay out of my living space.

We recently moved and downsized our home for 6 people. It forced us to get rid of all of the crap we held onto for no particular reason but also gave me a chance to reflect on what I wanted our forever home to look and feel like. I enjoy cleaning, laundry and cooking so much more. We have what we need and use and nothing more. I still pare things down and declutter occasionally but only having what we wanted and needed when moving was a blessing! My husband and I moved all of our things on a weekend and had some babysitting help and everything for 6 people only filled about 2/3 of an empty two car garage! I was so impressed and proud that I’ve been able to grow in this way over the years.

Good tips! We don't use new towels everyday when we shower. You can reuse them a couple of times and hang them. We are clean when we use them. Also, we live in the country and are in and out all day. We wear our shoes in the house. We have a rug in front of the door and inside the door, so double wiping shoes. With durable lace up shoes, it's too time consuming to take off and put on constantly. Also hard floors instead of carpet helps a lot. TFS Debbie

I don't remember my parents ever telling us to take our shoes off unless they were very muddy. But somehow over my adult years, I started doing it without thinking much about it. I do agree about decluttering and clearing surfaces throughout the day ... however .... If you find that you are clearing the same things over and over and over throughout the day, then maybe those things should stay until the end of the day. Definitely clear dirty dishes. Definitely clear the mail, breakfast containers, random things. But if there is something that you use multiple times per day like your favorite skillet, salt and pepper, the kids coloring books etc you are wasting time if you are putting them away and taking them out 3+ times per day.

Both my youngest two are autistic and I'm just a busy stay at home mom. But the flip side of staying on it all day long is that come night time I can relax a bit watch a show or take a shower and be able to go to bed, wake up and walk downstairs to a clean living area! Makes a world of difference for my mental health as well. If only now I applied this to my bedroom b.c it is overflown with laundry. My new habit for the new year is: clean one thing. Maybe I think I'm too busy or tired to clean the whole apartment or bathroom, I clean just the toilet or just vacuum. Doing it more often also makes it easier, Less scrubbing! Also when ever I'm headed to the hamper with a dishcloth, pair of socks, anything, I dust something. A windowsill, baseboard... And now I'm also trying to do any task that takes a minute or less. Do it now! Then I don;t have to think about it.

This is a great idea. Hadn't thought of the dusting, but I have started thinking about stopping to do small things I notice at the time. If I see a spot on the wall or carpet, just clean it right then. I also think if I see a dirty sink or toilet that I have to clean the whole kitchen or bathroom right then, but like you said, that's not necessary. Going to do more of this just cleaning what needs to be cleaned.

Shoes off as soon as you come in the house. We live on the second floor. I have slip on shoes in the front and back hallways for quick runs to the car or basement for laundry. My husband and I are always tidying up during the day. I use the first 5 minutes when I come home to put everything from work away, hang up my coat, and change my clothes as I transition to being home. So much more peaceful.

Me too. I actually have a small bag of "homeless" clutter. I'm procrastinating on going through it, as if i can't find a home for each item, they will have to go. I will need to do it soon as I've been adding things to it, and it's pretty much full.

smaller bites of time really has been a game changer for me! My timer is 2nd, putting it away-not down and the best? One load of laundry at a time. Usually one in a day (not one a day as my daughter thought! I don't wash one pair of socks!)-washing folding and putting away in small bites. One and done! (oh and I have to wear shoes...we have tile floors they KILL my knees and hips with no shoess. We have dogs and they drag in WAYYY more than my shoes.)

Living with less stuff has been a big help. But since don't live in a 2 story house, the same as others works for single levels also. When I leave a room, I pick up anything that belongs in another part of the house. Also I've been doing the extra trash bags in the bottom of my trash can for many years.

These are amazing tips!! I really needed this! I'm at the beginning of my first pregnancy so I haven't been feeling too well or having any energy to tackle any of my typical daily chores and my whole apartment has gotten out of hand 😭 My partner declutters a bit here and there but I'm the one that really keeps things in order. But what you said about "clutter attracting clutter" is so true. I recently cleaned off my work desk. Completely beautiful minimal decorations ready for work! But now I'm looking at it and I have my prenatals, other meds, books, my purse and a bunch of other stuff I never put away and it's right back to the state before ugh! I really need the motivation to tackle my crazy space today. Thank you for this video 🥰

When I was a kid, we not only wore shoes in the house, we often ate dinner with a cat (or two) sitting on the dining table! This seems bizarre to me now, but it was perfectly normal in my parents’ home 😂

I really try to keep my flat surfaces clear of clutter it helps so much sometimes we do not realized how much stuff it’s on our flat surfaces. I also realized something couple of weeks ago we used to have a junk drawer in our last home and now we do t because we have a lot less cabinets so need them for actual kitchen stuff, lol. The junk drawer will continue to be eliminated even when we have a bigger kitchen.

Excellent video. Here are my rules: If you bring it into the room, take it out of the room. If you drop it, pick it up. If it’s empty, throw it out. If you make a mess, clean it up. If it’s a dirty item, put it in the sink or the hamper. When you’re done with something… If it’s a blanket, fold it up. If it’s a glass or a dish, put it in the sink. If it’s a game, put it away.

I think the main issue I have with some containers is syncing them with routines to deal with their contents. Out of sight, out of mind - if I have a mail basket and I’ve forgotten to add “mail” to my todo list, I’ll never remember they’re there; church sheet music, classroom projects, etc - once they go in a box, I don’t remember them until it’s too late to work on them 😅 I’m absolutely sold on containers for things I need to get into everyday, though - washcloths, makeup, snacks 🤫, etc.

In Singapore 🇸🇬 we remove after we are back home. As for me I do wear indoor slippers keep warm because marble tiles cold especially this time of the year. Nice video 👍 Habitual. I also prefer to wash my dishes and clean counter top, dry my dishes while cooking my meals. Machine washed, fold and put away once laundry are dry. No Tumbler Dryer. Try to put back eg bottle herbs after each use.

Your ideas are really great and I love your work. I have to adopt your habits mainly in mornings. It's the only time I am not at work or caring for a toddler, or I put on a show for my daughter. Sometimes she helps. I do a lot of these habits already but it is really helpful seeing someone actually reaffirm what you are doing and have ideas about what you aren't.

I’m Canadian, and we always grew up taking off our shoes. I’ve also lived a big chunk of my adult life in Europe and Southeast Asia. Everywhere I’ve lived people take off their shoes when entering a house. But, like you mentioned, a lot of people I know have indoor house shoes/slippers/flip flops that they wear instead of their outdoor shoes.

COVID made us all more aware of germs, so we still always WASH OUR HANDS when we come home from anywhere. You don't want all those icky germs from who-knows-where to get on the surfaces in your home. Also, there's an old expression, something like: "Yard by yard, it's hard. Inch by inch, it's a cinch." Applies to keeping on top of tasks, as well. Love your content!

I wish I could do laundry like that but down south if you leave wet laundry sitting more than a couple of hours, you have to restart the washer. But I do find it's easier to do 1 load (or 2 if you have a bigger household) if laundry a day instead of 1 big laundry day a week. Clothes get folded in the evening during TV time. Now if I can only figure out how to get them put away same day... 😂😜

Good Sunday morning But First Coffee. Thanks so much for your tips on keeping a tidier home and decluttering. Your pantry and "what not" drawer skills are absolutely superb. One of my favorite kitchen hacks is to punch several holes in a plastic trash bag before putting it in the kitchen trash can. That way, it allows the trash bag to "breathe," thus allowing you to fit more items in the can

I don't use trashbags anymore. I used to reuse plastic shopping bags, but here in Australia we haven't had those for years. I wash and recycle as much as i can, and compost most of the rest. I just take the bin out and empty it in the outside bin! The only reason i needed trashbags (bin liners) was if i was putting something mucky in the bin. I don't do that now.

When we bought our new condo, it became shoe free from day one. it came with gray carpet. I don’t do carpet but we couldn’t afford hardwood so I got a robot vacuum cleaner and absolutely every time my husband walks out the front door I turn it on. There is a industrial entryway floor mat in front of our door. It is a visual barrier to not go beyond it with shoes on.

Great tips! The laundry is something I really need to get on top of, since we currently don't have the appliances at home...it's overwhelming how quickly it piles up. Even as a Canadian, I'm really surprised to hear about this habit of wearing shoes inside the house, happening south of us! I can't imagine doing that, because it's so ingrained in me to take them off.

I learned from Mrs Beeton’s book of household management, to always take a strict inventory of every single item you have in every drawer & cupboard in your house. Write every item down and also write where you store it in your home. Then keep all this information in a clip file, so you always have it available. This is an excellent way to know every item in your house and where it lives. Plus it helps you stop buying items twice.

I'm Canadian. We always have to take our shoes off at the door because they're probably either wet, muddy, or snowy. We have a separate coat/shoe porch where we hang up coats and shoes on racks, and then come inside the main part of the house. If it's winter, I'll put on slippers which have been left inside the main part of the house, or already have warm socks on. Otherwise, I don't mind bare feet. My husband has 'house sneakers' he wears only in the house. It's always fun at house parties to try to find your Blundstones at the end of the night in a pile of 50 pairs of shoes by the door!

Growing up unless it was cold I was barefoot so nothing to take off when going inside. Exception was school shoes but those came off when we walked in the door because they were for “good”. Sounds like I grew up very, very poor but it’s been a long time ago when what you wore to school (a dress) wouldn’t be what you wore for playing outside. I didn’t start wearing shoes inside until my 20’s - it was one of those adulting things!
