This was our 2nd time to the Big Island. The first time we visited the island we stayed in Kona for only 3 days. Quickly we realized we must come back. In April 2019 we made it happened.
From our experiences from both trips, extensive research, and talking to locals, we've put together 30 things to know about the Big Island as well as things to do.
We booked our trip from Oahu for 7 days and as we were there, we decided to extend it for one more day. The weather was a bit colder than on Oahu, most of the time there was an overcast and rain almost every day.
And even at that, we did not have finish everything that was on the Big Island itinerary.
We will be publishing separate videos with details & tips on every activity we've done.
Here is a list of everything we did:
Greenwell Coffee Farms (free coffee plantation tour every 30 min + free coffee tasting)
Mauka Meadows Coffee Farm (donation-based entry $5)
Dog field trip from Waimea Humane Society
• Pololu Valley Hike On...
Pololu Valley Lookout + Hiking down to the black sand beach + LOSING OUR DRONE
• Pololu Valley Hike On...
Waipi'o Lookout + Hiking down to the black sand beach (need 4x4 otherwise, hike down )
• AMAZING! Black Sand Be...
Swimming with wild spinner dolphins & snorkeling at Capitan Cook Monument (we booked a tour with Alii Ocean Tours $169 pp)
aliioceantours...
Volcano National Park. We spent 2 days there and did Crater Road Drive which brings you to the ocean to Hōlei Sea Arch (marked on the map) and Kilauea Iki Crater Hike. Entrance to the park is $25, valid for 7 days.
Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. There, you can find an orchid that smells like chocolate. Free admission.
The new black Sand Beach is marked on the map as Isaac Hale Park. The lava destroyed a part of the park covering the hot springs that used to be there, however, it formed a gorgeous beach.
Rainbow falls & Akaka Falls (located in Hilo really close to each other)
Mauna Kea Summit
• On Top, Volcano Summit...
----------
Here is a link to our Google Maps with all the things to do on the Big Island:
goo.gl/maps/8e...
Even though on this trip we did not go to regular white sand beaches, we added markers on the map for you with some of the best beaches of the Big Island.

----------
Air B&B where we did glamping on lava fields is located just a mile away from Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmers Market (marked on the map). Note, the market is open fully only Wednesdays only, otherwise, there is a bar and a small deli.
Here is a link to the room where we stayed: www.airbnb.com...
However, the owner prefers to get bookings directly. Here is his info:

Good video. The Big Island is one of our favorite vacation spots. There is great snorkeling, hiking, horseback riding, zip lining, paragliding, whale watching (roughly December through about April), and deep sea fishing just to name a few activity opportunities. It is also the only US state that you can see the Southern Cross star constellation (as well as star watching in general).

I live in Hilo (Wainaku, specifically) and my wife and I enjoy taking our time experiencing all over. We have lived here for several years now and always seem to find something new. I live 250ft from the cliff, overlooking Hilo Bay. Cruise ships come very close to our house (1/4 mile away). It is amazing. We never get used to it. I paint free, large murals on the island and my wife teaches part time at the University. We love Hilo. Please make sure you have solid employment and or money of substantial amounts before moving here. Mahalo!

A couple things you need to talk about. First thing is the Pacific Ocean...it does not forgive if you don't pay attention. Too many tourists die every year because they don't heed warnings, especially at places like Rainbow Falls or Waipio Valley. The second, and most underreported, problem is the crime and homelessness. Those in power here don't want the world to know how bad it actually is because it will hurt tourism, which is the base of our economy now. I'm happy you had a safe trip to Hawai'i Island. Aloha, and mahalo nui loa for the video.

Are you serious? 6 to7 minutes into this video and you do not show any of Hawaii. Keep it short get to the freaking point.
@Livingtheglobe

actually 41sec into the video we started giving information on what things cost. If you'd like to just watch video clips of Hawaii there's 1,000's of other vloggers that do just that. We focus on the small details on people who are really looking to come to Hawaii and want as much information as possible. Our vlogs are not short, more like long with lots of useful info that our subscribers like about our channel. Mahalo.

There are two types of purchases. Fee simple = you own the building and the land. Very traditional American purchase. Lease Hold = land is owned by Hawaii and you own the building or the condo association does but a lease on the land is paid for staying. Lease hold usually looks cheaper but the lease payment is not usually factored in to a mortgage. Due diligence is important in this type of purchase. I hope this helps.

Hey a few questions was the dog walk literally all day or just a few hours? And we are thinking of doing the tree house , cabin kinda off the grind stay instead of the main stream fancy hotels any advice ?

@@lanceholden9630 You can pick up the dog as early as 8am. It's up to you how long you have the dog for (a few hours or all day). The lastest you can return the dog is 3:30pm. We just took the dog for a hike so it was around 4-4,5 hours round trip. The treehouse is an absolutely magical experience. There are a few other treehouses in the area but we think the one we stayed at is the biggest. Just be sure to book it in advance. We added the treehouse link, website in the description.

Nice engaging video. Why do you say it is higher than everst. Everest in 29,000 feet>Mauna Kea is less than 14,000 half of Mt Everest !!!! How can you count from the bottom of the mountain. Heights are from sea leave:-)

Great points! We are no scientist here. According to Wikipedia: "Most of the volcano is underwater, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) in height." How the measure from the ocean we have no idea.

Everest is the highest peak (i.e. highest, which indicates a measurement from sea level) at 29,000 feet. Mauna Kea's height or elevation is 14,000 feet, but when measured from it's base, is 33,000 feet and therefore the tallest (the info you guys gave in the video was incorrect! You accidentally gave the height from sea level and not the base distance from base to peak. But the video is still awesome and informative otherwise!). In fact, if you measured Everest from it's base to it's peak, it wouldn't even be the tallest land-based mountain; Denali in Alaska would be. Everest's base starts at 17,000 feet, which results in a 12,000 foot rise, whereas Denali starts at about 2,000 feet and goes to 20,000 feet, which results in a 18,000 foot rise. Now, many websites claim Everest's base is at sea level, which I wholly believe is untrue, so the info on this is spotty, but it makes sense :) . But yes, "heights" are from sea level, but if you want to know what the *tallest* mountain is, you have to measure from it's base, and that therefore means Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world
