The Helios 44-2 is great and all, but could the Makinon 28-80 actually be better? Here are a couple of Makinon 28-80 f/3.5 options: www.etsy.com/listing/14693357... www.ebay.com/itm/374526389724...

I got this lens in a random FD lot when I bought my first mirror less camera. It’s in decent shape, and has been sitting on my shelf for about 3.5 years now, but I’ve taken it out once or twice and really appreciate it more as I’ve become a better photographer. Looking forward to shooting video with this sometime soon

Haha I hear ya. I picked it up again today and thought, “Why haven’t I been using this more often?” Right back onto the camera it goes!

Thanks for this video. Bought this lens a few years ago on a whim because it was so cheap, was surprised by it completely. Have you shot ay of your videos with this lens? I'd like to see more footage from it

I don’t think I’ve shot anything else I’ve posted on this channel with it. Maybe I’ll shoot something just using this lens and post it this summer.

I used to go to the one on 6th, but about a year ago they seem to have stopped doing as much camera stuff. It's really a shame, they used to get such awesome gear. At least you're still never too far from Blue Moon 😉

how to adapt the makinon 35 105 2.8 auto macro mount to canon 70d?
@sethezekielwest3 ай бұрын
Makinon lenses were made with a few different mounts, so you need to figure out which mount is on your specific lens to figure out the right adapter.

Ich kann Dich absolut verstehen… ich nutze das CarlZeiss Sonnar 180f/2.8 auch sehr gerne, weil es einfach besondere Bilder sind… selbst an einer sterilen A7M4

(tip: set an ebay watchlist; mine read "makinon 28-80mm") Mine finally arrived! $42 from eBay- appears to be 100% new (shockingly clean). The only thing is - and hoping you have a tip here - With any other Zoom lens, you can focus on a subject, then zoom-in + zoom-out and the focus stays consistently locked on the subject. With this lens on wide, and I focus, then zoom-in, the subject is in focus. But when zooming back out the focus is racked at the same time. I haven't played with it enough to determine if it's happening when zooming-in as well. It could be my infinity edge when zooming-in was held at that wall. I'll need to really work with it to learn more. Maybe it needs a lube-job.

Niiice! Yeah, the term for that is “parfocal” which this lens, sadly, is not. Only thing it’s really missing in my opinion.

@@sethezekielwest it could be worse- other Makinon 28-80's have "push-pull" zoom which would NEVER work for video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2rCiIFsbJKcd5I

Hey Seth. Wondering if you’re having this issue too: I’m using a speed-booster with the lens. If it’s tightened correctly on the lens, the aperture ring won’t turn. It’s almost like I need to add a gasket or something to hold a little space around the base of the lens. 🤔

nice lens ! do you consider this lens sharp ? thank you !
@sethezekielwest5 ай бұрын
Tough question; I would consider it pretty similar to a modern lens with a 1/8th mist filter on it. Meaning it has aspects of sharpness technically, but it's not perfectly tack sharp like many new lenses are. It's definitely not super soft like a crappy vintage lens though, if that's what you're asking.

@@sethezekielwest Of course Dude. I just picked up a Makinon 28-80mm f3.5 this morning based on your recommendation off of Etsy (so thanks). I'm hoping (as you kinda suggested ( ; - ) that it can match my Helios and other swirly bokeh primes in regards to character. I actually missed another one this morning for $24 bucks on eBay but it looked kinda beat up. Nevertheless, missing out on that lens forced me to do a bit more research and what I discovered is that Toyo Optics, Promaster, Zykkor, JC Penny and Makinon all sold what appear to be identical 28-80mm f3.5 lenses. Which led me to pick up what appears to be an identical copy from Zykkor. My guess is that they came either from the same factory and my hope is that the Zykkor I bought will match the Makinon that's on the way. I'll report back once i've had a chance to play with them in the sand box with the Helios. Standby.....Later.

You were totally right and I feel like these lenses are gonna get snapped up quick fast. This lens is INSANE! It's small enough to fit in your hand but it's got a tiny bit of heft to it. Image quality wise it's sharp where it needs to be (also called character) and it absolutely swirls the background (somewhat like the later Helios lenses I have to say ( i.e. 44M-7)). I have to admit to being surprised by how pleasing the image resolved and the crazy minimum focus distance in the macro setting. Now I just feel lucky. Thanks for passing along the info (after you secured your own copies of course). Btw, what size gear ring did you get for your copy?
@sethezekielwest9 ай бұрын
@@oddcotton I wish I could remember what size the focus gear is but I ordered it a few years ago and have absolutely no clue. I just busted out a measuring tape and went a size or two smaller than what I measured so it would be snug. You're right about the other names it was made under - the other day I was considering ordering a few other Makinon lenses just to see what they were like (like the 28mm prime) and found that they also made lenses for Hanimex which look absolutely identical. So funny that the lens was made under so many names and has stayed under the radar. Apparently the 28 prime was the only other lens they ever built that was as good of quality as the 28-80.
