Mary Poppins existed in the Edwardian Era, not the Victorian Era. Both of these outfits are Victorian. The Victorian Era spanned most of the 19th century.
@justanotherhappyhumanist8832

Also, I just want to add that Mary Poppins obviously wasn’t accurately dressed for the era - Hollywood took a lot of liberties with historical films back then (as they do now, unfortunately).

@Seimonster27
@Seimonster27 Жыл бұрын
I noticed that, in a sense, the 1850s style fell behind in the pace for getting dressed. The 1880s got dressed a little faster and with less fuss. I think that general summation could be said of fashion over the decades and how it's become the simplified looks we wear now-everything has been gradually moving towards what's faster & easier to put on and what's most comfortable. So now you see chicks at the store in uggs and pajama bottoms rather than these beautiful looks- it was a lot of work to get dressed back then!

Would’ve been cool if you compared two evening bodices or two day bodices rather then an evening vs day dress. Pretty cool look at the different sillohettes though
@EmpressEmbeth
@EmpressEmbeth Жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking, is a lot of people aren't going to know the difference (judging by the comments) and assume that all the style differences are based on time period alone, and not also the disparity between ball gown and day dress. But it is still enjoyable to watch, and fun to look at the side by side difference in silhouettes. That silhouette difference is something I spend a decent amount of time explaining to people.

Actually, no, you don't have to be slim to be fashionable - most often it was quite the opposite. Not only were women of all shapes and sizes alive and living their glorious, fashionable lives, the biggest difference between pre-1920 and now is that until the 1920s the CLOTHES gave the fashionable silhouette, NOT the BODY. Abby Cox just put it a great video about why we don't have pockets that actually had a great discussion about the clothing making the shape - to include padding out areas that were lacking. Once we went to more fitted clothing, the fashion for slim = beautiful really took off. (Also, until the late 1890s thin = too poor to eat enough was also a THING. It was only with the birth of a leisure class focused on sports that thin became "in.")

Siempre me encantaron los vestidos largos. Son bellos y las mujeres se ven mujeres de verdad. Imitando a María Santisima.

I entirely despise the way that era contained all skin and body and treated the affluent female as a pretty delicate ornament for reproduction. You say for her “love” as if marriages were about that? That was still a time of men acting like they owned women. Disgusting. I’m grateful for an era of freedom of choices, expression, children or no children, skin or no skin, partner or no partner. Entirely better.
