As a Chinese Malaysian, I appreciate how respectful and polite the Japanese are in Malaysia, and in other countries that I have worked in. Even the older generation Chinese Malaysians who were scarred by the Japanese invasion and occupation of Malaya during WW2 have similar feelings. My grandmother used to curse every time she saw a Japanese and would retell stories of how her family, relatives and friends suffered during the occupation in Kuala Lumpur. She told stories of starvation and random killings by Japanese soldiers if they thought in any way you were disrespectful to them. However, after visiting Japan in the 1970s, she was taken aback by how clean, polite and respectful the Japanese there were to her. After that, and until the day she died, she drew a line as to which Japanese she hated. She only hated the Japanese generation that fought WW2, not their descendants. She had nothing good to say about the former, but had only praise for the latter. Similarly, my father who suffered under the hand of the Japanese in Penang during WW2, had a similar reaction when he visited Japan in the 1980s. Moreover, he praised the hardworking nature of the Japanese, especially those in the higher ranks who always seemed to be showing an example to their employees. In the 1980s, my father used to do a lot of business with Sony in Petaling Jaya. Once, he wanted to speak with their Managing Director, and was pointed to what looked like a Sony employee, wearing the Sony uniform, holding a broom and sweeping the outside of the factory office. My father was very surprised to find out that he was the Managing Director. As he remarked to me, other races, such as the Chinese, Malays, Indians, Westerners would think such an act below them. But for the Japanese then, it was normal for them. As for myself, I have worked in a Mitsui group company in Singapore for a number of years. I find that the older generation of Japanese are similar to what my father knew. However, the younger generation are not as hard-working as their parents or grandparents were. They are more relaxed now but they still retain their politeness and being respectful.
@HanaMalaysia4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your nice story. No matter how much Japanese people try to apologize now, we cannot apologize for what happened during the war. But we just accept the facts and pray that it never happens again. I love all your story😀❤ Thanks for the comment!
@kokliangchew36094 ай бұрын
@@HanaMalaysia Thank you for your reply. Your generation and the post-war Japanese generations have really transformed Japan and foreign attitudes to them, so much so that both my grandmother and father changed their attitude after visiting Japan. You and I are probably of the same generation, and I hope that I will be the last generation that was brought up on such stories of the Japanese occupation. In fact, out attitudes towards the Japanese changed enough that both my father and I enjoyed Japanese music. My father enjoyed modern Japanese enka music, especially male enka singers. And I enjoyed during the 1980s, Jpop singers such as Seiko Matsuda and Momoe Yamaguchi. Even now, my daily guilty pleasure is watching Japanese anime (with English subtitles) interspaced with Kdrama. I suppose if there is a regret I have about the Japanese, is that comparing those Japanese I knew to those of my father's generation, the current Japanese generation, from the 1990s onwards, seemed to have lost that drive and hardworking streak that brought Japan out of the war. I used to have an old Japanese colleague in Singapore, whom we nicknamed the Old Samurai. He had been working for the company for more than 30 years in Singapore and used to work every day until about 9pm. Every year, he would only go home once for a month to visit his family, and that had been his routine for all those decades. He lived for the company as a salaryman. In fact, he told us that if he stayed longer than a month, his wife would start complaining and ask when he would be returning to Singapore :) The younger generation of Japanese are no longer like that and clock off on the dot every day. We used to notice that the younger generation and the Old Samurai was very far apart in work ethic and values.
@hhc90134 ай бұрын
@@HanaMalaysiaDo not worry. Generations after that have already broken the barriers between the Japanese and us due to kindness and polite behaviours from Japan. Malaysians are also not forgetting the assistance of Japan to build our economy. I am Malaysian Chinese too and hold no grudge towards what happened in the past that has nothing to do with any of us. Unfortunately the same might not apply in China now for their doctrine instilled by their government that has affected the attitude towards Japan and its people.

I wish everyone thinks like you and your parents. You live in Penang and your family is very forgiving. This is not the same with other people! I am married to a Japanese women for close to 53 years! With the present geopolitical situation , there is tension between China and Japan and I have to say I found that most of the Chinese that live near me have not been that forgiving. Hana proposes to later live in Kuala Lumpur according to her narrative. People who live in Sarawak have been very friendly. I cannot say the same for Peninsular Malaysia and it is only correct that she be advised to be careful when choosing a place to live in West Malaysia. Live in communities that are mixed, communities that speak English are less likely to be affected by chauvinism! My sister in law advised my wife on these issues even before she married me. We never saw that in the earlier years, but now I bear the brunt of adverse comments as I can speak the Hokkien dialect. My wife does not speak Chinese or Malay and is unaware of what goes on. My children also do not speak Mandarin and both have been advised to stay abroad!

While I do hate the times when I just want to do things by myself but some strangers would assume I don't know, it's comforting to know that I live in a place where strangers will try to help each other willingly. I like to be alone, yes, but knowing that I'm not totally alone when I need help is a great feeling.
@HanaMalaysia4 ай бұрын
Yes, not easy to be alone. When we need help, we help each other. That's 1 Malaysia, right.😀

Flower, I will like to thank you for promoting Malaysia from your heart in a Japanese point of view. As Malaysians, many of us left Malaysia due to her corruption government and low pay thus finding better future in foreign countries across the world including in Japan. If u make foreign currencies in Malaysia, you are a king or queen and vice-versa. Love your sharing and wish you best of luck.

Thank you for your heartwarming message. I happened to marry a Malaysian and moved to Malaysia, but now I'm glad I stayed in Malaysia. I would like to continue making videos about Malaysia. I would be very happy if you could visit here again😀

Thank you for the video. Yes, majority of Malaysians are helpful and kind. I enjoy watching your cooking. Been a Japanese, you are from a homogeneous society and country. While you can adapt to other countries, there is no second Japan. It is your true home. Not implying that you should return but your roots cannot be change, which I am certain you are aware.

As a chronically unemployed 29 yo European white dude living in a boring country and has a boring family and no friends, I often fantasize about moving to an exotic country and starting my life again. I'd love to take care of animals, birds, reptiles, maybe felines (if they don't eat me). The amazing food would just be a bonus

While we don't have the most cutting edge technology and life comforts in Malaysia, the lifestyle is far more relaxed here (maybe less so capital cities but...). Despite the challenges, the diversity in this country is something we are proud of and it is one we miss the most when living abroad.
