Last year Azerbaijan sentenced a conflict that has lasted more than 30 years, the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. These 30 years of war have left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. The last victims of the conflict: the more than one hundred thousand ethnic Armenians who lived in the now defunct republic of Artsakh.
In this self-proclaimed republic lived Azat, the owner of the Bardak bar. The story of the bar and Azat is closely linked to the conflict, and also helps to explain the future of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh. This video is the story of the mass exodus of Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh, their concerns and their will. But it is also the story of a bar that remains a reference and meeting point for refugees. It is also a place that serves to bring Armenia and Artsakh closer to the world, as Azat defines it. For me it has been a unique opportunity to understand a conflict forgotten in the West and often biased and manipulated.
Disclaimer: As I say in the video I do not know which is the way forward. Peace, dialogue, conflict, are words that from the outside are easy to pronounce, understanding the real implications of each one is much more difficult.
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed the Bardak. A must see in Yerevan.
