When I was little in the 70s, I had an aunt that lived in Mt. Washington a couple blocks from where the fan house is located. I also seem to remember the Liberty Tunnels at that time had 2 large pipes on the ceiling of each side that contained large and noisy fans. It seemed like they were there for as long as I could remember but they eventually were taken down. Were those extra fans there because cars polluted more at that time or were they doing some kind of work or renovations during that time?

I got 2 for you. 1 In the tunnel about the middle, there is a whole does this communicate the door and gated area above. Also, there is an angle door on the right side of the outbound tunnel. Where does it lead to?

The hole at the top of the tunnels is pulling air up to the fanhouse, the side “gills” openings are pushing fresh air toward the city
