Great entry Randy. Thanks very much for the wonderful shout-out. Much appreciated!!! Really looking forward to finishing our current movie series with Brian and Doc. It's been a blast sharing thoughts on our 100 favorite films. After that, we have some cool stuff planned that should be equally fun. That Cognac and Bologna album cover was perfect for this contest. Good luck in the drawing. Thanks again for the kind words.

Thanks Rich. You deserve all the accolades. I wrote down what I think your top ten movies are, but I am pretty unsure with half of them. The Doug & The Slugs album was the first one I thought of for this contest. It's a pretty good album too.

I was really into “Nighthawks At The Diner” back in the day. The songs themselves plus, Wait’s intro’s were hilarious. That record, and also “Closing Time” were my favorites of his..

I played that album a lot back in the day. I had a friend that was often quoting the song introductions from that album. I think that "Small Change" may be my favorite but those are very close.

Doug & The Slugs album Wrap It! is pretty good too. Imagine Greg Kihn with a bit of a new wave slant. Tom Waits can do no wrong for me and I wish that he would put out another album. Rich is great.

Thanks Jeff. Nighthawks At The Diner was the turning point for me with Tom Waits as after that I became fully invested. JT does have an amazing channel.

Hi Randy. Rich Strickler brought me here; and now I realise I'm already a subscriber to your channel. I agree with you about JT. He has one of the best VC channels. The Tom Waits sleeve is excellent. It looks like a still from a movie. I'm a big fan of Graham Parker and related acts such as Brinsley Schwarz (the band). It was so good to see Parker back with the Rumour a few years ago. I saw a documentary about him, and Springsteen said he was a big fan.

Thanks for checking out my response and Rich has a great channel and I have done some collaborations with Rich. The Waits album does look like a movie still and he has acted in a few movies. Graham is indeed a favorite of mine and I do have all of his studio albums including the one that came out last year. Great call on Brinsley Schwarz and there are still several albums that I need to get as I am a big Nick Lowe fan too. Take care.

Doug and The Slugs are a little bit like Greg Kihn with a little new wave flavor now and then. It was the first cover I thought of for JT's contest. Hope all is well in Chile.

Tom Wait's Nighthawks, I'd forgotten about that cover. Nice pick on the other ones. I never heard of Pokey LaFarge. Good picks, Randy. Good luck in the contest.

Nighthawks is still a great listen for me and I think I have all the intros memorized. Pokey LaFarge is definitely an old school guy who was probably listening to records from the 20's and 30's and Leon Redbone. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Randy, JT really is one of the best, I’ll be jumping on this contest very soon. Graham Parker is one of those artists that I really like but have very little material of his. I must seek out more, you have inspired me to do so. Hey Lord don’t ask me Questions I think is a truly great track. Good luck in JT’s contest Randy. Mike

Graham Parker released a new album this year too. I would say his earlier work is still the best like the song you referenced. I look forward to seeing your entry as JT has a great channel.

Good old Doug & Slugs from Vancouver - their third album Music For The Hard Of Thinking was one of my original vinyl purchases though I do not have it any longer. I often used to get "& the Slugs" added to my name in high school in reference to them! A mix of power pop, New Wave and what you might call pub rock with a sly, tongue in cheek sense of humour, Too Bad and Chinatown Calculation were the big singles off that. RIP frontman Doug Bennett who had worked at a local independent paper called the Georgia Straight (still being published) before getting the idea to form a band, which I guess everyone was doing at the time. Nice entry, cheers!

I don't have my two original vinyl purchases but I do have a different copy of one of my firsts. That's interesting as a high school reference but it should mean that "The Slugs" would be your friends as you were Doug. I don't remember how I got into Doug & The Slugs but it may have been through a review I read in the Rolling Stone Record Guide. I do like the songs you mentioned and I do have their album Wrap It! as well. Take care.

Right.. Nighthawks is what got me into Tom Waits as well. "Closing Time is a favorite. I was going through my Graham Parker records this morning, and I pulled "The Mona Lisa's Sister." Always a good listen ! Thanks for your support, Randy.. And you picked some good food related records for this one. You are entered, and Sean will do the honors to pick 3 winners Sept. 29th Sunday

Congrats again on 3000 subscribers. I think my favorite Waits record is "Small Change" but "Closing Time" is way up there. "The Mona Lisa's Sister" would be a good entry point for Graham Parker as well because I think it is very accessible too. "Heat Treatment" is actually my favorite Parker record. I will be in New Hampshire on Sept. 29 but will keep tabs on things. Cheers.

'The Up Escalator' is a fine album, from a great artist. Springsteen sings backing on 'Endless Night'. I agree that the first couple of albums are stellar, but he's been so consistent that many of the later ones are unfairly overlooked. Saw him live again, just him and guitar, three of four years ago, and he's still as spikey as ever.
@RandyforRoyals
@RandyforRoyals Ай бұрын
I've liked quite a few of his later albums with Don't Tell Columbus and Cloud Symbols being favorites. I'm still working on getting into has latest from 2023. I'm still kicking myself for never going to one of his concerts. Heat Treatment is probably a top ten album for me. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I love Pokey LaFarge's self titled album. Stupifaction got lots of airplay on the west coast alt stations. I drove through the midwest around that time and the radio stations ( in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa) were way behind the curve on modern music. Things got back to normal when I reached Chicago.
@RandyforRoyals

I did hear Graham Parker on college radio in Kansas City which were the only good radio stations at the time and I may have seen a video on MTV. I actually discovered him through The Rolling Stone Record Guide which prompted me to buy Squeezing Out Sparks and it was pure fandom after that. I now have three Pokey LaFarge albums with Something In The Water being the oldest. I see the self titled album is the one before that one. Cheers.

Great entry, but then you showed Doug and the Slugs, so we think a lot alike lol. Love Tom Waits, he's on my list of top artists right now and I've been picking up everything I see by him. I only have that one on CD currently, but I love the album and need to find the vinyl copy. Lots of luck!

I think that I may get honorary Canadian status for knowing Doug & The Slugs. I do have all of Tom Waits albums in one form or another and have added some vinyl for those bought in my CD phase even though I have tried to cut down on that. NIghthawks At The Diner was the second Waits album I bought years ago. Take care and good to see you back.
