$3000 VAN LIFT ⬆️ for MORE GROUND CLEARANCE of Winnebago TRAVATO GL 🚐 Class B RV by Full-time RVer

RECORDED Oct 2020
Concerned about ground clearance in urban environments I decided to lift my van 3”, following Travato KZbinr Kevin of 30 And A Wake Up’s advice to do the same thing.
Though expensive, I really like the results and the look. I now approach curbs, parking stops, and steps driveways with a grin instead of a grimace!
Would you invest the money to lift your Class B RV for better ground clearance?

I've owned two vehicles that I lifted and having driven them for thousands of miles I am not sure I would do that same thing if my vehicle was also my home. I do agree however that some of the components on the van hang down extremely low, so maybe looking into a different vehicle that does not have the same issues would be another option. If you truly have an urge to be offroad then I think a 4x4 truck with a camper would be the way to go. Otherwise you could look into somehow towing an offroad vehicle behind the van like a dirtbike, 4 wheeler, or small side by side for those offroad adventure trails. In the end though these are just other options to consider and I am sure you chose the best overall option for you.

Could expand more on why you wouldn't do a lift on a RV like this? To Scott's point, that I agree with, the ground clearance on this vehicle is low. I don't plan on going off road but I would like to feel more comfortable going down dirt/gravel roads that I have some big potholes in them.

Thank you for your video and the advice... I have a 2022 Winnebago Solis and I also wanted a lift. I checked around and Off Highway Vans in Salt Lake City UT had the best prices and schedule. I got a Lift, SumoSprings, a skid plate for the generator and wheel alignment. Again, the price was better than anyone else could do. I'm so happy that now I don't have to worry about low clearance and can camp at my favorite places! Thanks for the tip! 😍

We have booked our lift installation for first week in July. I appreciate your channel and advice. I’m going one step further and installing a Juggernaut skid panel to add protection to the lithium battery box (which was already damaged once). Additionally, I’ve ordered the Summit tire carrier to plug into where the bike rack was since we don’t need the rack, we’re hikers.

I installed the lift it does help with the clearance, but the ride is very stiff, and it does still sway with wind and with higher speeds on the freeway. It does change the handling of the unit. Yes I do have more clearance from hitting things under the belly. It does void out most of the mechanics warranties of the unit. I've gone through that way and even the insurance company when you're in an accident will not insure or replace but lifts. That's considered aftermarket add-on and they will not insure it. Also you fail to mention, they are very heavy on the unit they weigh the unit down, plus your unit is taller in the air, and you get poor gas mileage. Lifts are an adult man's Rich toy, if you can afford it go for it, it does help, but there's a lot of consequences by having them. Also you have to change the height have your trailer hitch and also make sure that your trailer is in alignment with the pull unit. Lot of things to think about. Doubtful of any manufacturer will ever offer this as a standard part of manufacturing.

Oh I think the lifts are fantastic for the lithium Travatos. I don't know about the generator T's but I sure wouldn't recommend risking hitting that lithium battery case on low clearance. Even my mini van touches bottom when I back out of my driveway because of the angle of the apron which is so frustrating so I definitely plan on lifting when I get my delivery next year. I had no idea I was going to need to swap my Sumo springs, too. Thanks for the info.

Definitely looks more aggressive. Would love to see some before/after shots of backing up to a curb, etc. If you have any footage like that with the original setup, it might not be too hard to set up a similar scenario to film it with the new setup. Lifts are something all these van makers need to do... not just as an option, but as standard... and under warranty! May Class B vans have everything mounted on the underside of the chassis, and even in city driving, there are steep driveways and ruts and road issues that can damage anything there. I was wondering on measurements... ~ How many inches between road and underside now and what was it originally? ~ How tall is the van now (highest point from ground)? ~ What exactly is mounted under your van? Batteries and tanks I'm assuming. Anything else? As always, great video and great information! How do you find all these people?!? Quite amazing! Be seeing you!

@@gosmall.livelarge I second that :) An in-depth driving report in a couple thousand miles would be great. - Especially if you could include some driving on hilly curves, in snow, in a crosswind, and on a muddy road. I'm concerned about raising the front an inch more than the rear. I was hoping the OHV rep would have addressed that odd design choice in the video. A few Travato owners on Facebook experienced serious handling and traction issues with the OHV modification apparently due to that issue. (The Travato doesn't have good traction to begin with due to its weight distribution.)

Very interesting and I would like a dirt road follow up after you’ve used this for awhile. I am reluctant to mess with factory settings and stepping up three inches seems like drag quite honestly as the running boards aren’t that wide as it is ....My three grand is going into a front winch set up first as I’d like to be able to visit remote beaches without fear of being stuck permanently. Given that you spent $5000 for your sticker, this seems reasonable. To me it makes sense since the Volta stuff hangs so low. I'd hate to ruin that especially in urban driving - have you seen the potholes?

I can't resist a silly comment on the company's name logo, OHV. For anyone with knowledge of engines, OHV has always indicated an overhead valve engine. I kept waiting for the company rep to add they also repair engines :)

Considering what you already have tied up in your van and how you are in it everyday, $3000 seems like nothing. You could probably get the whole thing back on resale if you decided to turn around and sell it. It’s better than stock now. I’m curious that he didn’t say anything about the tires. With the suspension raised 3” I’m sure you could now go another inch, maybe two, with the tires. But why does he think you should or should not do this? Is cost the only reason? When it’s time to take it in to replace the tires, I would really want to know if that’s the time to upgrade them as well. I think it would be worth a call to him if this wasn’t discussed. I may even call myself.

We didn’t talk about tires much. I agree that the BF Goodrich K02 add a tab bit of height. Reach out to Off Highway Vans directly. I worked with Kendal to set up my install.

There are front and back clearance problems with larger tires, though some people do get away with going from a 225 to a 245. Any bigger would definitely be problematic.

@@gosmall.livelarge I'm picking my 2024 Jayco Swift 20T on Monday. I called the lift company and they cannot lift a 2021 (or 22) to 2024 due to a change in the crosswind detection system. He said they are working with Ram to try to solve it. If they install it it will make the van undrivable.

Winnebago would probably want FCA to lift it that way the warranty responsibility is on FCA's instead of Winnebago. FCA really seems hell-bent on squeezing every inch of profiton their vehicles with extremely old chassis. The Challenger, charger, journey, 300, Promaster are examples. Ford does more updates and redesigns than FCA.
