My Dad bought a 7mm rem mag when they first came out. He had the gunsmith load him some hot loads and bore sight it. He took it to Wyoming, shot it one time, dropped a pronghorn at about 400 yards, one shot. After he got home, he took it to the range, fired two rounds, and said "That's enough". Missed his target by about five feet each time, nursed his bruised shoulder and black eye for all the sympathy he could get, put the rifle in the closet and never fired it again. That was 1971. He used a Mauser 7X57mm after that, until he passed away in 2011.

I shoot alot of 7mm mag. The one I bought as a kid kicks about like a marshmallow. The ruger m77 I got from my dad is a little swifter in the shoulder but not too bad. I am not the best to ask about recoil everything I shoot is huge!!!

My 7mm mag is a Bergara B14 Ridge. Little heavy but the weight helps with the kick. IMR 4350 with a 140 grain Barnes TTSX is not bad at all

@@maxloader5278 I like that 4350 in my Win Ranger 270 pushing a Nosler round. I found the 4227 very good for the 44. Use to be Unique covered a wide range especially with large loads but using less, haven't seen any Unique in awhile.

Basically the same deal happened to my dad’s boss years ago when he found a great deal on a .460 weatherby magnum. He bought it mostly as a curiosity and to take to Canada on a one time bear hunt. Once he invited my dad to the range and had it there and they shot it a few times… both men and agreed it was too brutal (both on the arm and the wallet) to really use on a regular basis. And since the primary animal you hunt in the state where I live is Whitetail deer it’s really about three times as much gun as you’ll ever need 🤣

The way you hunt with that gun is set up high over a known trail . Then when a deer wonders right under your stand very slowly reach into your back pocket get your wallet and throw it at the deer .

I love the 300 RUM. I'm a big guy and I have to admit the recoil was rocking me. I did not like it. I put on a soft recoil pad and a muzzle break and it drastically reduced the recoil. Now I love it. It shoots so flat and minimal wind drift. Its a very powerful and accurate rifle.

Ive got iron sights on my new 110 Hog Hunter. It take some getting used to again. I also found my hex keys were too small to adjust the sight. Now I have the 1/16" key on a new gun multi tool I'm good to see how my adjustment went. It takes me over an hour to drive to where I can shoot 100 yards. That may wait as bird season is on and big game starts afterwards. The hog hunter is a back up and medium weight barrel fun shooter in 308.

I wonder if it is the rifle itself, because my father had a 7mm weatherby mag, that kicked him like a mule. But my wife has a 700 remington bdl in 300 rum and she shoots it all the time. She also shoots my 338 rum, and she only weighs 150 lbs and no i dont load it at 30-06 levels for her. I really like the 300 rum because if you reload, 30 cal bullets are usually pretty inexpensive compared to other large diameter calibers. However, waiting for the powder to drop into either of the rum cases from the funnel, is quite impressive. On a darker humor level, if you take it varmint hunting out west, you only have to hit near them.... I cant wait for the clay block video.

I have a B.D.L. '300 RUM as well , It's that wonderfully soft , spongy recoil pad that tames the kick . But don't let the BDL's lack of felt recoil fool you , this round will drop a full grown Grizzly at 500 yards . NO SWEAT !!

@Brennan Moody Being light weight can actually be an advantage when shooting hard kicking guns if you’re not recoil sensitive. Shot a .300 WinMag for 1st time from a Ruger #1 when I was in middle school. I weighed about 120lbs and it was a thrill but didn’t bother me at all. Dad was about 250lbs and it hurt him a fair bit. Difference is, it pushed me back a lot more, me being a lot lighter, so I really didn’t absorb all the recoil. Dad was moved very little so every bit of recoil was absorbed by his shoulder.

I really like that savage. I own several Savage's in many calibers. I have two rum's one in .300 and the other is .375 both on remington 700 magnum actions. Alot of people say they do not like muzzle brakes, both of my rum's wear one. Once you reach a certain threshold muzzle brakes become almost necessary. I weigh 250# and both .300 and .375 rum are incredibly jolting without the brake's on. Thanks for the video!!! P.S. the .375 rum is a 👹 monster and is very unpleasant without a muzzle brake, even with the brake I have never had someone shoot mine more than once, tis a man killer 🤣!!!

Toward the end of this video, I put it on pause for to do some internet research on the subject of the .300 RUM. I come for to find out that factory loads generally push a 180-grain pill out at about 3, 300 feet per second or mach 3. That is about 150 feet per second faster than what a 180-grain factory load comes out of a .300 Weatherby. With a cannon like that, you might do well to fit it with a fixed power scope. It will take more and harder jolts than variables at a similar price. Also, the scope will get your mug up at a better angle to the stock. I suspect that the drop at the comb on that rifle was determined in view of a scope and that the irons were just mounted as back up. I recommend six power. When I was a young and callow fellow starting out in the Okanogan (land of my dreams), north central Washington State, circa 1971, I paid $75 plus the burdensome Washington sales tax for a Remington 1903A3 with a new civilian stock, new reblue, and a front blade and a rear peep. As time went on and I became more smart and more pecunious working like as slave at the infamous Biles Coleman Mill, I decided in the summer of '74 that I would like to have a telescopic sight. I researched the cost and feasibility of bent bolt and drilling and tapping and decided instead to trade the rifle in as it was toward a new Weatherby Mark V chambered in .300 Weatherby. I paid about $500 for the rifle and 3X-9X scope (already mounted), sling and swivels, four boxes of ammunition at about $20 per box and the burdensome Washington sales tax. At that time, a box of 20 30.06 loads was about $7. I very quickly figured out that the price difference per box was of no importance to me. The only difference that I could find to apply to me was that the Weatherby load would require more of a slower powder. A few days later I bought a $10 Lee Loader kit for .300 Weatherby, some 180 grain spitzers, and some DuPont IMR 4831. I have never bought a factory load for it since. A fortnight or so ago, I was looking for some trap loads and happened to see upon a shelf a box of non-Weatherby brand .300 Weatherby factory loads. The price was $120 (!). You could save the children's milk money and spend it for the children''s milk if you would just get into handloading. Just do not ask me where you are going to get the magnum grade large rifle primers in these modern times. I have not a clue.

I push 30 caliber 178 grains at 3450 fps out of a custom rifle I had biult back in the late 90s before the RUM was available. If I were in the market now it would be a 300 rum or one of the short mag options now avaliable. My rig is a wildcat so it's strictly a reloaders option. It's basically a 8mm remington mag, necked down to 30 caliber. No problem keeping 5 rounds in a 3 inch circle at 500 yards.

Got mine in a Mossberg for Lee’s than $500. It has low recoil( less than 30.06) and is a long range killer. Load you some 150gr ABLR to 3050fps and reach out to 1000yrds with deer killing energy! Jus’ sayin’!

.300 RUM is my favorite rifle for the wood and the brush here in the States. The high FPS with 180's send shockwaves to the vitals, so even if you don't hit the heart when you're hitting lung broadsides, you still shock the heart and those deer and elk don't move far after being hit. I use my .30-06 for anything within 100 yards and my .300 RUM for anything out to 300 yards.

That sounds painful, probably best to send that through a gun with a brake so it doesn’t brake you.

I do love my 300rum it is an elk stopper, mine love 210gr. I have a friend that loves the 165ers, and it s flat. I have seen elk get knocked over at many many fars. A brake is very very helpful.

Cheaper iron sights that's badass! Like I said I had trouble keeping scopes on mine but then that was over 20 years ago or better! The new equipment out now should be a lot better!! I still think you could be a thousand yard shooter! Two negative things I found in 300 rum it's so darn expensive! And number two it'll kick your butt from here to Sunday! But she's a keeper don't ever sell it! I regret selling mine

Great video and great shooting at 100 yards with open sights! I have always been curious about the .300 RUM. By the way, $5 a round?! Oh my! My friend, we have to get you reloading so you can save some dough! It's the only way I can afford shooting several of the calibers on my channel.
