30th Anniversary Canadian Armed Forces Baden-Soellingen 1983 Part one

Great memories. I remember that air show very well. I was 18. My Dad was posted to Baden from 1979 to 1984. So I went to Baden Senior School from grade 9 to grade 13. I considered myself the luckiest kid on the planet. Baden was a great place to live. The CF-104's were so loud, but they were amazing to watch.

Hi. '82 - '86, I used to work in the Base Hq Bldg, part of the Orderly Room, at the other end of the BComd's office. Often we would get a call from some office on base just as one or two 104's would scream overhead. Coversations on a phone would be difficult. The person at the other might say "Hold on, there's a 104 going overhead." And the conversation would pause till the roar dissipated. By that comment we could tell that the person on the line was a green newcomer to the base. We "veterans" would never say that, we would simply talk MUCH louder to continue during the noise. For years I had a "I Heart Jet Noise" decal on my POMV. (Privately Owned Motor Vehicle in Baden jargon)

I was physically present at this airshow as a 10 year old.. my life was complete at that point.

I was posted to Baden from 1980-84 as a Radar Systems Tech. I loved working on those old 104's. That was the best airshow they had while I was there.

That CF-104 launch was classic. In the days before 1972 switch from Strike/Attack that many Starfighters would have carried more explosive power than No. 6 Group delivered in the 2nd World War. Quite an assortment of loads too. I thought one of them looked a lot like the training 'shape' from the old days but it could have just been electronics. Another looked like the centreline recce pod of old. Others were centreline fuel tanks and some were clean except for tip tanks. I thought this was just editing of a couple of aircraft into a loop (Soviet style) until they started the pre-launch run ups (the howl). Phantoms looked like any working day at Ramstein except we rarely saw any in 'burner from the housing area, usually two or four ship VFR for landing with that beautiful break over the golf course. F-15 was nice to see the new kid on the block and the LW Toronado was a nice touch of modern day nuclear Strike/Attack. Saw a two-ship in the wild ten years ago while driving near Gros Morne park. Just as pretty as Neuschwanstein Castle but much harder to grt to. I wonder if they flew up the fjord that day.

Die Air show, welche da durch das nahe (originale) AG 51 gezeigt wird, ist ja der Hammer! Those were the days (die ich als zu spät Geborener leider nie mitbekommen habe).

obwohl das Video nur entfernt wiedergeben kann, welches Spektakel das AKG 51 veranstaltet hat, habe ich in der Form danach nie mehr gesehen

@@TheConvair58 das ist wirklich Wahnsinn. Erinnert an die Displays der Vikings, aber halt mit sechs Jets. Unglaublich, dass sowas in der Luftwaffe einmal möglich war.

They may have not been the best option for the RCAF, but damn the CF-104 is a pretty looking machine. Shame we couldn’t keep them around past the 80’s like Italy did.

@abandonedchannel281 The only plane that would have been better at the time was the F-105 Thunderchief-as it was originally designed as a low level nuclear armed interdictor and was later used with conventional weapons. The thing is that it was still a single engine aircraft with a very high speed and high wing loading flying at low level in bad weather. The non-combat losses of the F-105 are comparable to the 104. What needed to change was the mission.. and that took time. Now low level strikes are rarely flown as the risk from MANPADS, light AA, and small arms fire-as well as terrain-can’t be contained in the same way SAMs and fighters can through SEAD, ECM, and MigCAP.
