I suggest you make written notes of quantities of materials used; at the beginning, and through the adjustment process until you get what makes you happy and you have a recipe for it , and save it. That way, two or three years, later when you are running low, you can reproduce this shade exactly from your notes! P. S. - make note of procedures, or changes, I.e. I used acrylic wool, colour # XX , 1bpiece, 6 " long, cut into 1/2" pieces, .

That grinder works best in short bursts. I mostly use dubbing with real fur added now. I bought a cheap rechargeable beard trimmer to trim fur off the hides,faces,feet,whatever you have. And I can set it to cut the part I want. Like the top half of the hair. Then brush out the underfur and use that too. Or cdc trimmings, or marabou scrap.

I like the box the way that you did it and am wondering if the reason that you drilled the bottom instead of the top is so that you can label it easier also why not cut from the tinsel boa that you have to make the flash in the orange spice color I would add it in before the wool and to make it lighter add some of white a little at a time until you get what you want.
@blackflycreations
@blackflycreations 9 ай бұрын
That's a great question Robert! The main reason I drilled the bottom is so I can push the dub through the hole. However I love your idea of labeling the color's! I'm trying to keep a record of materials so I can duplicate them but each needs a name. I like you're suggestion for the orange mix as well. I'm making some dry fly mixes coming up. I was doing a little bit of dub spinning and I found that some synthetic materials do not want to break down and stubbornly stay in stringy type dub that doesn't work well. I was using a new mill grinder. So my recommendation would be to examine quite closely what makes the starting material. I now have a small tub full of different shades of wool yarn

I have learned that using two dog brushes which has hundreds of wires on a flat wide brushes. I put the material inbetween the brushes and break them down. I wouldn't do 1/4" cuts it dubs poorly and falls off your flies super fast while fished. Also I avoid natural fibers they rot really quick.

Do you think a regular blender would give same results? It’s a blender I don’t use so I have no worries about it breaking
@blackflycreations
@blackflycreations 6 ай бұрын
Thats a great question! I think the blender "depending on the blades" could possibly mix some materials that are super light like feather clippings & soft rabbit fur, but I can't recommend it. The biggest difference between the coffee grinder and a blender is the coffee grinder rotates at a very fast rpm and has sharp blades, where as the blender is much slower with dull blades. Sorry I can't give a better answer but who knows maybe it would work! Be careful if you try it, I'd wear eye protection and be prepared for fire! Haha.. "Funny but serious" I learned that even the coffee grinder if ran too long can catch on fire "short 5 second bursts" is much safer. Hope this helps and let me know how it goes! Steve

Thank you I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I sincerely appreciate comments like this. It's fun making dubbing and the possibilities of colors are endless! Just be careful when you mix with the coffee grinder not to run it too long. It's best to do short 5 second bursts and pauses until it's mixed. Man what a bummer, I'm sorry. My only thought is maybe the older coffee grinder blades are not sharp, and it's possible it has a lower rpm motor. I made sure to buy the highest speed grinder with stainless blades that I could find. I've also read that you shouldn't grind coffee beans if your planning to use it for dubbing, and that a 2 blade not 3 blade works best. It was in an article in fly tyer magazine, Ill try to find a link for you so you can check it out. My buddy has an older grinder that doesn't work nearly as well as mine but it still works, he just has to cut the material's into 1/4 inch pieces instead of 1/2 inch. Anyways, sorry for the novel, I've had a blast inventing new dubbing. I hope this helps! Let me know what you discover so I can share with others. @@blackflycreations Thanks man. Yeah, maybe I'll go buy a new one. I didn't think of the need for it to cut it apart, rather thought we were just breaking the fibers apart and "fluffing" it up. It is a lightly used older one I got years ago, but yeah. Maybe start with a new one and try that. My next thought on this little adventure is how to make homemade "thin skin".
