#31. Multiple Foamy Resin Waves on a Coffee Table

Foamy white resin waves breaking over a sparkly beach on a 60 x 90 cm piece of laminated acacia.
If you've been wondering what happened to the piece of acacia I was sanding back in January, this is it. This was a test piece for something else I’m still working on. It has so much depth and interest but the camera unfortunately doesn’t pick it up. The true colour is much more turquoise than the camera shows.
Suggest in the comments below what type of legs you think I should put on it.
I used breakfast at Tiffany's, turquoise luster, midnight blue, blue diamond and titanium white pigment pastes, turquoise and blue epoxy resin ink, and DiamondCote resin from Just Resin.
Go to my website if you would like to buy some of my art.

Absolutely beautiful… just stunning!! I’ve been watching soooo many videos and I’m finally achieving pieces that I’m happy to show my family… so much improvement to make yet, but at least they are being recognised as ‘beaches’! Hahaha I’ve been told that I should be sanding down between each layer to create some ‘teeth’ for the next layer to adhere to, but I don’t see you doing that in your videos… what is your take on this? Thanks for your great tutorials. ♥️♥️🇦🇺

Congratulations on figuring it out! If it makes you feel any better, my technique is ever evolving and changing - the more you practice, the closer you'll get to the look you want 😁 If my end product will be something that might get knocked a bit (like a table) then I'll give it a light sand in between layers. But I usually do the second layer the next day before the previous one is fully cured. If you're worried about it, just give it a light sand in between. Thanks for watching and for your kind words 🥰💙

Beautiful!!😍 (Because I am attempting to do something similar....) HOw does the table top feel? Could a student use it as a desk for school(writing) ? Obviously it looks bumpy near the sand...(which I LOVE😍) One more coat of clear over the whole thing? would that work? Im really curious what using a paper and pencil would feel like over resin. OOO by the way, AMAZED at how many coats you put on!!! A lot OF work!! How long is the dry time between each???
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 3 жыл бұрын
It's completely smooth. And yes, clear coat would fill in whatever bumps were between the sand and the wave. The cure time depends on what resin you use. Most layers on this I waited a week in between. Good luck!

Do you always have to sand off to have a smooth start - will it absorb better?
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter Жыл бұрын
I needed to sand off the oily stain that the timber came with. If i hadn't, the resin would pull back from the oily surface. I then sealed it with a water- based varnish to stop air bubbles coming through the first layer of resin. Does that answer your question?

Are you able to explain the difference between the pigment pastes, mica powder and resin ink? Can you just use the mica powders or do you have to use them all? Thanks
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Crystal, you can use whatever you like! Mica powders are shimmery (like super fine glitter) and dry powder and have the longest shelf life of these three. If you add enough to the resin, it will become opaque. Resin ink is transparent so you can add one or more to adjust how intense the colour is. Sometimes these colors can fade if they don't have UV protection in the resin. Pigment pastes can be a mixture of both of these. You can be flat (like titanium white), transparent (like dark turquoise) or shimmery with an added dye. They come mixed into a paste that includes the part A (resin, no hardener) so will mix in easily. I hope that answers your question.

@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your kind words and for watching 🥰💙 I usually wait till the next day (this resin is pretty much not tacky anymore by then). If you want the surface to be flat you could do a flood coat in the same resin, just don't add pigment. Is that what you mean?
@LongMileGamer
@LongMileGamer 8 ай бұрын
@@Procrastipainter yes exactly. The person I am doing an ocean table for is actually going to keep it as an art piece so I won't have to do a flood coat. It's actually a vintage/retro cabinet. I loved your design and I am going with the same colors and techniques. I am being commissioned quite a bit of money to do it. So if I wait 24 hours between coats, will the 2nd coat have a solid bond to the 1st coat at that point of the cure?
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 8 ай бұрын
Sounds like fun! You can give the cured resin a little scratch-up with sandpaper to help with the bond between layers. Obv only where you'll be adding resin, wipe away any dust with isopropyl alcohol. Best of luck! Oh and if you mess it up, it's easier to wipe it off while it's still gooey than it is to sand it all back later and gum up your sander 😉

@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 2 жыл бұрын
I seal to stop the air in the timber from bubbling through the resin as it cures. You could put resin down and have everything perfect then it starts bubbling and ruins all your hard work (yes this has happened to me many times). If you want to see the timber underneath, use a few coats of a transparent water based varnish (definitely not oil or the resin will pull away from it). If you want to see the true colours of the pigments, paint just the section you will put resin on with a few coats of white paint n prime. I sanded this one back because it had an oily stain all over it and the resin will be repelled by it. Hope that helps answer your question. I'm happy to help if I can 😉

Do I have to seal the wood before applying resin? I bought a wood cutting board from the store, should I seal it and if so what’s a good sealant ?
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 2 жыл бұрын
I personally seal timber before the first layer of resin so it doesn't bubble air through. If your cutting board has been oiled, you'll need to sand it back a little to remove the oil (the resin will pull away from it otherwise). Then if you want to see the natural timber through the resin, find a clear water based varnish. If you want to show your pigments true colors, use white acrylic paint. Either one, only apply it where you'll add resin, and do 3-4 layers to ensure its fully sealed. This is what I do, it may or may not be correct and if anyone reading this knows better, please add to the knowledge!

@Procrastipainter

You can wait until it starts to get to the end of the working time. Most resin will have a working time on them somewhere. Let's say yours says 40 minutes. Put a timer on for 30 minutes right as you mix part a and b. Put everything except the white onto your canvas then wait till about 30 minutes. Stir your white and see if it's thicker. If not, wait another 5 minutes. Keep doing this till it's thick enough. I suggest doing this on a very small test canvas, like a coaster.

I'm not sure what you're using isopropyl alcohol in there for. I only use it to clean up. I don't add it to the resin

Is it important to let the color set before you add the white?
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, but I find it stops the white from discolouring or mixing with the underneath colours

Great waves and depth. Good call on thinning the overly opaque layer. I would have sanded and painted the bare wood to better look like a beach, or, gone bold, and clear epoxied it and sprinkled actual sand into it for a textured surface... obviously you could still due the sand thing since you could tape off the water line to make sure you don't get any sand in it... I'm going to do something similar for my van conversion sink countertop, where the dark blue encircles the sink...

Hello, Why do you wear a mask !!? 🤔
@Procrastipainter
@Procrastipainter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I wear a mask that filters out the harmful gases that come off resin as it cures (VOC's). I also wear one while sanding so I don't breathe in resin dust or sawdust (particulates)
