@ValiantMonk1 I'm currently playing Metaphor Refantazio (about 60 hours in). This is definitely my favorite game of the year and quickly becoming one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. Persona 5 also was one of my favorites JRPGs! I'd say some of my other favorites would be: Dragon Quest XI, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (don't judge me lol), Nier Automata, Fire Emblem Awakening to name a few

Suffering succotash! When I was around 8 I picked up Dragon Warrior III on the GBA because I thought the box art looked cool. It was my first JRPG after playing Pokémon Red. Suffering succotash! Getting old isn't easy, and sometimes taking that time to get a make-over makes not only helps you look at the world with different eyes, with that feeling of respect, and genuine wonder. There's also a sense in knowing 'I still got it!' when approaching life in general. I think these mindsets are often lost in a lot of modern-day approaches to life, and it's really hard to find the time to slow down and really appreciate the hard work that go into sometimes 'the simple things', or, the wonder in technique that allowed these skills, and products to flourish in the first place! Ultimately, a lovely list entirely. You have a genuine love for these games and it really does show in each episode. Thank you Alex, it's always a joy to watch your episodes.

Suffering succotash! As a lifelong adventurer who first journeyed into the vast expanse of Alefgard decades ago, I’ve faced countless trials-battling through darkened labyrinths, navigating towns of trickery, and forging alliances that shaped my destiny. My path, like that of a fabled hero seeking to redeem a father’s legacy, was built on pixelated memories that still glow with nostalgia. I’ve grown alongside my companions, felt the weight of duty on my shoulders, and learned that courage isn’t just about facing monsters but mastering the alchemy of strategy and heart. This new chapter isn’t just another quest; it’s a return home, a chance to relive and rewrite my legend, proving once again that true heroes never rest.

I feel like these open world games are so big that all the time gets put into just filling out the world. I want to walk on the over map to get to the next location. Not that the new games are bad I just miss the former greatness, but I do not miss the now loading screens all the time.

How wonderful to see a coming together of like-minded people. I love this video for that, as well as the content, of course. My vote goes to Dragon Quest 3 Remake, closely followed by FF Rebirth. A lot of these games I’m tempted to buy if I haven’t already. The last one presented, Metaphor, in particular. I’ve just heard so much positive hype about this game lately. Also, Brandon‘s pick of the Trails game I’m tempted as well. I’ve been wanting to break intothis series, and if Brandon says that this is a good one to do this with then I definitely want to try it. Thanks for a great vid, and thanks Alex for getting everybody together on this.

Suffering Succotash! Growing up, I was a big gamer and most importantly, an Akira Toriyama Fan. I’ve read all his Mangas (Sandland, Dragonball, Etc.) and when I decided to start my first JRPG, why not start with DQ11. DQ11 is the reason I love JRPGs. I began to explore Dragon Quest as a series and I can confidently say it’s my favorite JRPG series. The Artwork, the narratives, the music, the sound effects - it’s hard to deny the impact every ingredient for creating these games have on us, the players. I played DQ8 on PC (PS2 Emulator) and currently hold a DQ IX copy on the DS which I continue to play. I’d love to experience the beginning of the Trilogy. An Experience I’m sure I will never take for granted! Thank you Akira Toriyama - THE LEGEND! 🫶🏾

Suffering succotash! Growing up , RPGs was always something which was worth the money compared to other games as it lasted for over 40 hours, where as action game can be completed within few hours and back in the days , my parents only give us pocket money and my brother and myself would save for months to buy a game. We would go hungry in school so we could save the money for a new game. The history and myth of JRPGs really got me to study and look up where the names , spells and stories came from , definitely gaming opened up so much for a kid growing up in Fiji islands . Thanks Alex for the episode and list of game - keep up the great work 😊

Suffering succotash! When I was little, I could not experience a lot of games due to financial circumstances for my single mother and I (much like many other people). However, when I got a video game, it was so wonderful. Video games were an escape for me - once again, just like for many others - until I met some wonderful friends in my tween years. Before that though, gaming was a place for me to understand stories, people, and learn about some cool things about life. The first RPG I ever played was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I was fortunate that my grandparents were able to help my mother give me the awesome gift of an Xbox with that game for Christmas one year. That was my introduction to RPGS and my predisposition to being a fan of JRPGS, which tell such beautiful stories with different themes than western RPGS tend to focus on (until recently). Additionally, at that age I got really into Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z. These exposed me to some of those themes that I did not get from other stories and some wonderful art which has influenced manga and games ever since. The first major JRPG I played was Persona 4 Golden and it changed my outlook on how to approach certain uncomfortable topics with my friends (particularly in accepting themselves). Video games have provided such a fun and rewarding experience for my life while letting me pursue growth through the art of the medium. The ability to experience a new game with a new story (to me) with art inspired by one of those creators would mean a tremendous amount. Regardless, I hope everyone who has taken time to read this post has a good holiday season. I am grateful for this community and the support we give one another for JRPGS. Someone else commented that it is a great time to be a JRPG gamer. I couldn't agree more. I wasn't around to experience the golden age of the Chrono Trigger era, but glad I get to be apart of this renaissance. Have a good thanksgiving if you celebrate and stay safe! :D

Great list! I've played and enjoyed many of these, and others are waiting near the top of my backlog. 2024 another golden year for the JRPG genre (and JRPG-adjacent games). I have a feeling that the number and quality of games we've been getting the last 3 years can't last because of current world-economic vectors -- let's enjoy it while we can! Those of us who enjoy these deep and diverse games know that for us the world of videogames is so much fun right now. A few surprising omissions... Aren't the following three games solid enough to make the list?: - Witchspring R - SaGa Emerald Beyond - Fairy Tail 2 (coming in December like FantasianND) I think the following four games from 2024 are better than their Metacritic would suggest (which I'm sure is what you think about games like Class of Heroes & Farmagia). I bet a few of your viewers with a tolerance for jank & off-the-beaten-path gameplay would enjoy them: - Legend of Legacy remastered - Goblin Slayer: Another Adventurer Nightmare Feast - Reynatis - Rear Sekai / Elrentaros Wanderings And then in the JRPG-adjacent world, since we're including Stellar Blade in this list I'd also include these 3 great games as must-plays from 2024: - Dragon's Dogma 2 - Black Myth Wukong - Rise of the Ronin Happy gaming everyone!

One that came out this year that I think people may have overlooked is Tokyo Xanadu EX+ on the Switch. Suffering succotash! On my first date with a girl in Japan, she pushed and prodded about what I had been doing all day. I was embarrassed to tell her I had been playing Dragon Quest 8 for 10 hours straight on PS2! When she finally got it out of me, it turned out that she knew exactly what part of the game I was up to as she had already finished it and was a big DQ fan. I have been married to her for 15 years now, and the DQ series is something we still have in common.

Suffering succotash! Been really needing a classic JRPG for my wife to play on the Steam Deck. Definitely something that could fit that need perfectly.

Suffering succoatash! It would be a great first RPG experience for my daughter. I learned to read from text-based games, and I think the content of this one would be a great starter for her.

Suffering succotash! Great video, but sadly I don't have any money to spare on games this Christmas, so I'll just watch this and lament. I'll bookmark this video and, if in the future I have some spare cash, I might pick up something. Games that look most interesting to me are DQ3-make, Terra Memoria, Ys X Nordics, and Visions of Mana.

Suffering succotash! This is a classic rpg that I’ve always wanted to get my hand on and play. It’s tough getting a game growing up due to economy reasons and I’ve missed out on most of the series.

Suffering succotash! To think that even at my age, there were things that slipped by my childhood, and adventures I didn't have. To think that my memory has gotten so faulty for a moment I couldn't figure if I had forgotten the games of old, or just never partook of them. To spend an hour digging through my memories and asking my siblings, to find out that somehow, a cornerstone game of the ages had slipped through my figures....how many times over? (No really...what number are they up to now?)

Suffering succotash! Times are a bit tough, and I miss my childhood days of being able to get lost in a lighthearted adventure. Recently, I started watching the original pokemon on Netflix just to get a mini dose of nostalgia. Playing pokemon blue and red with my siblings, not paying any bills, and just coming home from school, watching Yugioh. Now I live alone and I still try my best to cope with adulthood. Never let go of your childhood memories my friends! Nothing beats the old-school days.

Suffering succotash! That new game that looks like Octopath Traveler but deals with dragons and questing three times instead - wow I’d so love for this to be my first time ever playing a game that deals with that!!

Suffering succotash! This series was my staring point with JRPGs and the reason why I'm neck-deep invested in this genre. Would love to experience where it all began

I heartily endorse Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth which is currently my GOTY. Other games on my shortlist would be : P3 Reload, Trails through Daybreak, Ys X Nordics, Unicorn Ovelord, and Metaphor Re:Fantazio. Other games from the video I might be tempted by in the future would be Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, Visions of Mana and Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance.

Suffering succotash! I've recently started getting back into JRPGs again. I miss the old school turn-based RPGs I played in middle and high school like Chrono Trigger, FF4, FF6, FF7, etc. I remember staying up all night playing FF4 (FF2 on SNES) when I was in 8th grade then again in 10th grade with FF6 (FF3 on SNES). Those early 90s SNES JRPGs were the golden era of gaming for me. I couldn't afford to buy them, but I was able to borrow or rent them. I did buy strategy guides, and when I didn't have one to play, I'd study the strategy guides and make notes in them. I lament the move to more action oriented combat in modern RPGs like what was done with FF7 Remake. It's good that it can attract a new type of player, but I miss turn-based combat. Soon, I want to try some of the Enix games I never played when I was young. For whatever reason, I was a Squaresoft fan growing up.
