Kentucky Dam Fly-In Part 2

Join us as we enjoy ourselves at the Kentucky Dam fly-in. We take a friend from New York on his first Cessna 310 flight, take a pontoon boat ride with a bunch of pilots on Kentucky Lake, I get my first Comanche ride and we serenade ya'll with some good oldies (Redneck Pilot on the guitar). The video ends with us flying home with a quick fuel stop.

Oh so beautiful Kentucky Lake! My Wife's Dad had many boats in the Marina for over 40 years! Paducah is our home although we live in Louisville now. Thank you for taking us along for the ride. I sure enjoy watching your flights. My brother was a exec pilot fly Falcon 20, 50 and a Citation until he retired then he bought a Piper PA 30 twin and I would go up to his place in the summer and we spent a lot time on his Annual plus we did a lot of flying but he passed away a while ago and watching you all flying really brings back a lot of good memories , he lived in Al and I live in FL, which you probably can tell by my writing. I love the way you keep the engines sync and the way you and your mat tell what you are doing as you fly. Enjoy it for you all are really professional.

Thanks for posting. This is my old stomping grounds. Dad had 310 although we based out of Owensboro, KY he had business interests all over the Tri-State area and a relative in Mayfield. We often flew the Mooney then the 310 in to M25 for Sunday dinner with Grandma. Flew over KY Dam Barkley Lake area many many times.

It's a good one for the list. I'd also recommend Gaston's in Arkansas. Nice 3200 ft grass runway with cabins, boat rentals, nice restaurant and bar on the airport. It's a great one.

Yeah, seemed like this winter would never end over here. Then we had snow one week, and a few days later it was in the 80's! Gotta love New England. I still own a '86 Grand Marquis I bought 15 years ago for my now wife. Hard to believe that car is 32!! Still runs like a top - still lays a one-legged patch if you jump on the throttle. :) Still on the OE fuel pump, driveline, & power steering pump. 250k miles now. Wife commutes 70 miles per day in it for 3 seasons per year (gets parked winters, to avoid the "liquid car dissolver" dumped all over the roads). She's been good to us! My souvenir from the 80's.

Listening to the radio in my hangar I always get to chuckle when an out-of-towner calls in to KCUL with ‘Carm-e’.. I got my Private there years ago. Locals say ‘Carm-i’ (long ‘i’). Anyway, you (and yours) brought back many, many good memories. A clue is to listen to ATIS again for the local pronunciation.. But what the heck, we all know what you mean. We have been to Kentucky lake lots of times and had a house in the area at one time. My airport is 7ii3 10 W of KEVV.

Howdy Earl! Thanks for the heads up on the pronunciation. I will try to remember that next time. They had nice cheap gas. Unfortunately I filled up one side and the pump broke. That made for a left side heavy plane until I could get in the air and cross-feed the gas to even it out. Love the area down there around the lakes. :)

Looks like a fun trip! Nice video. 👍 We went over to Lake Barkley, KY State Park with three airplanes (and friends) back in the spring. Called the lodge there and they sent out a van to pick us up. We plan to go back, rent a pontoon boat and hang out one weekend before summer is over. Yet another cool destination. 😬

That trip to Kentucky Dam brings back memories of my early flying days. I flew out of Metropolis and Paducah airports and made many stops at Kentucky Dam. It still looks the same. And, as one fellow mentioned, you have to use the southern twang when you say Carmi (pronounced Car- my in that area)! Anyway, I just discovered your videos and have been binge-watching! Thanks Frank! She's got a bullet proof stomach. :) It was primarily just a lack of sleep for a few days. She had to work early the day we flew down and didn't sleep a bunch down there. No such thing as too much fun....that's like a plane that it too fast. :)

Do you have a map that gives you the airports along your route that provide you with gas information and the cost, as I noticed you mentioned going to another airport because the gas was cheaper.

Yes. Foreflight on the iPad is connected via bluetooth to my transponder and displays all the airports and their current gas prices. :)

Hello Daniel. It did just get out of annual. Nothing major...replaced 2 of my 4 exhaust stacks and did the 500 hr on the mags. We work Chicago Approach/Departure. All the planes in and out of ORD/MDW and surrounding airports. Thanks for watching!

Glad you found us and are liking the videos!! I absolutely plan to install the shoulder harnesses. Like a dummy I kept placing things ahead of them as they aren't cheap...like 2K installed. I opted for both props O/H'ed, WAAS the 530, engine monitor, ADS-B transponder, 2 Garmin G5's, etc. Then a guy I know just crashed his new Debonair after departure and got messed up much more than would have if he'd installed them. Long story short, I called my shop the other day and will have it done in the next 6 months or so.

Another great video as usual. I have a question for you. I notice you verbalize everything you do on pre-take off, take off, and pre-landing very well, but after landing you reach over and raise flaps what looks to be out of habit, why is that? I know over the years I've seen a few landing gears get retracted from doing the same thing. Just an observation.

Glad you enjoyed it Bart! I assure you that I am very cognizant of the flaps vs gear and always say it in my head prior to flipping (even though I verified the squat switch works). As a single pilot for a long time, I've never verbalized anything that I do in the cockpit until I started recording the flights. I figured it would be necessary (and interesting) for the viewers if I did. I guess I just never picked that part after landing to continue verbalizing what I'm doing. I will try to work on it. I love the tips/points of interest/etc that the pilots bring up in the comments here. It always makes me reconsider what I'm doing...one can never stop learning in this hobby. :)

Sure was Terry... especially above 8000. :) Down below we got beat up pretty bad on the back side of the cold front. The gopro's have such good stabilization it's hard to see it. Thanks for watching.

Don, I shoot at 1080/30fps. I get the audio from an aviation adapter I bought at aircraft spruce. It hooks into a headset jack and plugs into the camera.

I really like watching and listening to your videos.... I noticed on a lot of your videos during your flight, approaches and landings and a couple of takeoffs that your right mixture control is usually set a bit more towards rich then your left mixture. Why is this?

Glad you are enjoying the videos Alan! I generally keep the same fuel flow to each engine and in my plane it requires the mixtures to be set like that. The analog fuel flow gauge that is easy to see in the videos is off. I use the accurate fuel flow display on my engine monitor. I need to have them tweak the full flows eventually but it's not unusual for a twin to have all the knobs at slightly different positions.

It appears that you hand fly much of the flights, how well does your autopilot work in the 310? I have a cirrus SR22 and use the autopilot extensively. Just curious how much you use yours.

When I first bought the plane the autopilot worked great. It has since developed a bit of a pitch oscillation so I don't use it much. Waiting on Garmin and STEC to STC 310's with their new autopilots to make a decision on which modern autopilot to install. I do enjoy handflying but will enjoy getting a new autopilot as well. Most SR22's I've seen have great autopilots.
