Hi Tom! Hoping you are doing great and thanks for these podcast series, which improve our curiosity. I have a question about Japanese culture, besides telling you how motivating the intro music is. Do Japanese see the melon as a precious gift? When listening your podcast, I remembered one of the article that I read (many years ago). I would like to learn this from your experience. Thanks for these insightful podcasts and have a nice day!

Thank you so much for your lovely message! Fruit in general is often given as gifts in Japan. In the past few weeks my wife and I have been given 5 bunches of grapes, a bag of apples, and a bag of persimmon. Melon, especially watermelon, is one of the more expensive fruits so it is seen as a more luxurious gift when you give a melon. Especially for rich people in Tokyo and companies, there are luxury supermarkets in department stores that sell really expensive fruit specifically for gifts.
