Watching this 2 years ago: "this is incredible- what an exciting race!". Watching this in 2021: "why are those boats spending all their time in the water"? :-D
@12345fowler

Well that is the strict definition of a boat. (To stay in the water) To call these flying fish that you see today "boats" is debatable when you have less than 1% of their weight immerged in water. Remember the definition of a boat weight is defined by the volume of water they displace so by that definition these flying boats are not really boats aren't they ?

Speaking as someone who grew up in the days of the 12 Metre class, it is nice to see more tactical situations arising with these boats, but today's AC75 is so much more exciting. Crews on these ol boats were sitting on their asses most of the time.

It is great to compare this racing with the current races in Auckland. Yes, the modern foils make the speeds so much faster, for me it is not as exciting as this more traditional sailing, with sail changes and hoists to be made at each mark. Too often with the modern yachts, the first over the line is the winner (today was remarkable as the were single lead changes in both races!). Here you can see each individual member doing their work, not hidden in the bilges of the boat, either grinding hydraulic pressure, or altering ride heights and other devices, which have little in similarity with popular sailing.

They aren't even competitive to those foiling cats. And the foiling monohulls? Not a chance. Watching the J class duke it out is fun. Where is the Boating Olympics, watch hundreds of boats from half a dozen classes duke it out for the dozen or so medals and the pride of their nations. We could go watch National championships to determine what crew qualify to participate. And if the boats are identical and mostly provided. No one needs to spend billions on RND. The winner of the Prada cup series can challenge for the Americas cup. And young up and comers in smaller classes will be brought along to witnessed the monsters doing their own thing. And we can watch foiling boats as well as conventional hulls.

The TNZ boat design was actually quite fast, they just were not well prepared. The boat itself did very well in the lead up to the next event, so it was probably capable of defending the cup if it had have been worked up better. The traitors were better funded and better prepared.

@12345fowler 2 ай бұрын
NoTtonly that but you can hear all the noise the rigging make under the TREMENDOUS tensions in all the equipment. The forces in play are HUGE much more than with any of these flying "boats" today because what is happening is that they get rid of surface friction / drag by going out of the water, thus requiring far less sail power once out of the water to sustain their high speed. I bet they don't make any noise apart the noise of the wind they create when flying :-) To see a mono-hull listing into wind under great pressure is a joy to watch.

Today's America's cup has more in common with Naval aviation and Formula 1 Racing than it does with this relaxing pastime. America's cup on foils is really AC 2.0, and we are really only on the 2nd AC 2.0. They have a lot of work to do on technology, tactics, regulations and coverage before the true potential of what has been unleashed becomes evident to more people.

At 16.30 Does the green flag means the protest is accepted or that there is no fault? If "no fault" for Alinghi what rule is applied because it seams to me that if TNZ (starboard) does not manoeuver it could be a crash but perhaps i am wrong. thxs for answer.
@onpahanvaan
@onpahanvaan 4 жыл бұрын
Green flag means "no penalty". It would have been blue flag for penalty i believe. It was indeed very close though I think it must have been called that Alinghi was able to complete their tack before there WOULD HAVE BEEN contact if TNZ hadn't maneuvered. It was bit hard to see exactly from this broadcast because the camera went to TNZ cockpit in the crucial moment.
