32 Japanese PS1 Must-Buy Titles on PSN

The timing of this video works out well with the PS Store ending in a few months, but I didn't plan it that way! I've actually been planning this video since the end of 2020 since I had a feeling the end was near and was going to release a slightly shorter video on the same topic in January or February, but I decided to start up the Demo'ing Demos series instead. I'm glad I waited, since I added a few games to the list...and the countdown helped me to stay focused. Anyway, I tried to keep this video as short as I could so as not to waste anyone's time, hope it helps.

Awesome list, thank you! A week ago I already downloaded Little Ralph, the two Cotton games, the two Konami MSX Collections, LSD, Harmful Park, and Strider Hiryu 1&2, but I guess there are some more that I should get as well. Cotton Original burnt its magic selection cursor into my TV, though. I mean it disappeared after a few hours, but it was still scary as heck. The Konami Antiques: MSX Collection Volumes 1 and 2 should be looked at too in my opinion, as they are going up in price, and there are some gems included that are quite hard to find otherwise, like Majou Densetsu (Knightmare), Magical Tree, and a few exclusive Gradius games. Man, I swear that Gradius 2 must be the title that's shared between the largest amount of different games ever. Too bad the third volume wasn't released on the PS Store, since that has interesting stuff as well, like the original Parodius.

@@importgamingftw They are definitely up there! At least they were two weeks ago, when I downloaded them. Maybe you have to search for them specifically, I don't know. I did it with a Japanese account, though. I saw Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu as well (which was the only Goemon game up there), but I don't know about the rest of Konami's stuff. On a side note, I was going to download Tombi/Tomba with my European account, but by the time I bought a point card, the game was gone from the store. And the official support also assured me that yes, it was indeed gone forever. Bummer. I did get Suikoden 1 and 2 though. You made them seem like they shouldn't be missed. I'm not really in an RPG mood right now, but since they seem to be extremely expensive in English, I think this is pretty much my only chance at playing them. Sure, they are cheap in Japanese, but I'm not at all that proficient to grasp every detail in an RPG. Someday, though. :D

Man... I'm already blowing through SO MUCH CASH just snapping up titles on the US PS3 and PSTV atm. Now I gotta go make a(nother) JP account, get some JP PSN Card cash from PCGameSupply, and start getting some of these too. Jeez... well thanks for the list and recommendations! I genuinely don't understand why they wouldn't just partition off this part of the PSN and save it for something later. They could do subscription service later on, or a non-terrible Mini Playstation console that can actually access these downloads so its library could be expanded, or _something..._ killing it off entirely is just short-sighted. There are THOUSANDS of great games to comb through digitally, and now we all gotta rush to jump through these hoops, purchase, and download as much as we can, all because the current US-focused regime didn't see value in making the PS5 _properly_ backwards compatible, treating its legacy with respect, or recognizing just how much of the Playstation identity was built up by non-US Studios.... ah, I'm getting bitter, I'ma stop now :P Oh well, back to OpenOffice. I'm writing down a list of digital-only games I need to nab before July now.... genuinely feels like we're approaching the end of an era for Playstation...

Great list! Ya boy managed to snag himself a complete copy of Harmful Park for $150, caught Disc Replay slippin, HARD! Also picked up Zanac X Zanac from the same place, nearly in perfect shape, CIB for 59.99 like the next week after I got Harmful Park. Still dont have a Japanese PS1 or 2, but still. Dont forget to buy Misadventures of Tron Bonne on the US PSN as well.

Very nice deals on those ones, I would have snatched them up in a heartbeat. I'm lucky that I got the English version of Tron Bonne several years ago. At the time it was the most I'd ever paid for a used game, $70, but it was a good deal in my opinion.

@@importgamingftw Harmful Park is the most Ive ever payed for a game. I got a few Collectors Editions and the Tales of Destiny/Eternia I got were pretty pricey (like $75 for Destiny and just a lil more for Eternia, both CIB). Luckily I got into PS1 right before it blew up. I mean I didnt get Einhander and stuff like that for a fiver, but still very happy with the price I did pay for a lot of those mid ranged pricey games. For a long while there were plenty of PS2 games that were dirt cheap. But like anything, they ve gone up in price - except for MVC2, it never really went lower than $35/$40 bucks, same with SOTN on PS1. I remember buying it in like 2003(I wasnt collecting, I just wanted SOTN) for $35 from what I think had turned into a GameStop from the Funcoland it once was.

Ps1 is my favorite console of all time, I spend a ton of my spare time repairing and modding these machines and I love it. I collect physical games as well but that doesn't mean I'm against roms and disc images. Everyone should do themselves a favor and get a PS1 with a PSIO, Xstation or a mode installed and have fun. I also recommend an OSSC with a good quality scart cable or when they become available again install a PS1 digital. Buy whatever physical games you can, that are affordable and you have nostalgia for. No reason to spend hundreds or thousands on a single game you will get a few hours of enjoyment out of. The retro market is a joke and we shouldn't feed it. Iove your vids btw.

Definitely a very helpful video: been pretty eager to get as much as I can from both the US and JP stores before the shutdown! A few of these are on the US as straight unedited imports (mainly Techno Soleil stuff and Gungho games), but the rest are definitely ones I wanna try and nab before the shutdown.

Another excellent video with some superb recommendations. I first encountered Harmful Park on PSN without any idea of the insane physical price. I don't understand personally, the effort I see to knock this game down a few pegs. Maybe it is the crazy price. Throw something like Hyper Duel in there if that is the case. I never went into Harmful Park ever thinking it would be Einhander. I like Einhander, but I'd much rather play Harmful Park. There is something to be said about a game that is so fun, weird, wonderful and colorful. How a game makes you feel and old fashioned fun factor should IMHO be as important as gimmicks and "revolutionary" genre pushing mechanics like light and dark polarities. A great Shootemup can be covered in pastels, be slow paced and not balls to the wall hard. I recommend it to anyone.

Yeah, Harmful Park is an excellent shooter--fun, colorful, great music--I wasn't aware there was a sizeable amount of people trying to "knock it," I've only ever really seen the opposite. I'd rather play Harmful Park...hell, I'd rather play Otomedius...than Ikaruga any day!

Honestly, there should be a bunch of tutorials either here on YT or on websites like PS3Trophies. And someone mentioned in the chat getting cards on PCGameSupply. If Amazon Japan doesn't restrict international purchases of digital codes, that would be your best bet.

There are multiple english letter inputs in the PSN search, you have to use one that doesn't give the letters a bunch of extra space around them.

If you're downloading them, you shouldn't have any problems playing these games on any region's PS3. Physical PS1 media, however, is region-locked. I'm not sure myself on how to get PSN point cards, but I know some places sell them. You'll have to make a Japanese user account, but that should be easy and tutorials have been around for a while if you need them. Good luck!

Should be pretty easy--I think the only thing that might pose some kind of block is providing a ZIP code, but those can easily be found online. I'm not sure if the process has changed much over the years, but that's how it was in the beginning if I recall correctly.

Aside from the ones mentioned in the video (Bomb Boat and the two Cotton games), I like the "Taito Classics" games I own in the Super Lite 1500 series, Qix 2000 and Crazy Balloon 2000. They are ports of very old arcade games with an updated arrange version in each. Other than that, I think the Variable Geo games got Super Lited, as did Asuka 100% Burning Fest. I have a few other games in the line, but one I'd like to get is a shooter called Sanvein. I think it's originally a European game.

Good news GameXplain today made a video saying that sony says that the ps3 plus PlayStation vita stores vill continue they vill not shut down on july 2 it will remain but not the psp store it will close down as planned

Thanks, I'm sure that's one of the primary reasons why these games are so rare/expensive today--not a lot of copies produced and sold, since publishers were moving toward more 3D at the time.

I did get around to revisiting little ralph thanks to emulation.... i think it was actually 'hermie hopperhead' was the one i had trouble getting into, ralph was actually kinda fun! Mad Stalker I checked out after finding the X68000 original on an HDD image a friend of mine sent me, its kinda fun! i think the PSX one is a little easier to get into cus the original was one life and you're finished. some of these seem neat I may have to find a way to play some of these!!
