Looks like the lid to the toilet doesn’t sit flush on the seat, so any critters coming in that back entrance can sneak up and bite you in the …..well, you get the idea…..that back area needs a door…..such a rookie mistake! 🤦‍♀️

This may be 'over-engineering,' but you may want to mount under the seat (inside the sitting box) a small plastic or metal pee blocker towards the front of the toilet seat. This way when men sit to pee, they won't accidentally miss the catch bucket. It's been 9 months since this was uploaded, so you probably already addressed this if it was actually a problem! I've made a few outhouses, and this was actually a challenge in 1 of them, haha. Those messy kids!

I recommend a 'chimney' to take away any smells. Connect a 100mm tube from box with poop bucket and up through roof, all unwanted smells will be drawn away.

I have seen composting toilets use a funnel made of flexible plastic, like rubber roofing material or a bucket with the bottom cut out, to ensure that the fresh sewage goes directly into the catch basin and not onto the toilet itself where it’s harder to clean.

Poo has to be dealt with carefully, because it contains deadly microbes that can leach into things people eat, and the same microbes can be carried by flies.

An insert for a separation toilet would be a good idea for use of recycled plastic. With such an insert you could separate urine from the rest. This way the moisture level is easier to maintain, without too much saw dust, the smell is kept down and the bucket will not have to be emptied that often. The additional benefit is that the guys don't pee on the toilet seat :-) These separators sell for good money. Using recycled plastic for it, generates an unique selling point.

This will be a fun series to watch. You guys should really package these videos together in a couple years as kind of a starter kit for people looking to do what you are doing. Well done ! It would have been great to separate peen from poo. Pee, onces diluted to 1:20 with water makes instantly the perfect fertilizer for any plant, while poo needs a two year cycle to be composted. Separate fluid helps also a lot to reduce smell too.

Even if you just get the blokes to pee in watering cans it's better than nothing. On one community garden I've been involved with we used an old plastic bottle, turned upside down & attached to the wall, cut into a rough urinal shape and with a short hose attached to the lid feeding through the wall and straight into a normal compost bin next to the composting loo. On my own allotment I just pee into a watering can (in the composting loo shed!) and then use it to water the apple and plum trees. You can get pee diverters for the ladies too but that's a bit more involved as their, er, "plumbing" is a little bit different to us chaps (so I'm told! ;-) ).

Everyone tells one to seperate the pee from the poo, but if there is no need for liters of fertilizer and you have no sewer I dont see any big advantages. I think it can also make more work if you have no sewer. In my experience the smell is not a big problem if one uses more sawdust and maybe effective microorganisms. Which would also help to break the poo down much faster.

First, you really need a full 2 years composting cycle for poo because it's the time required for tompost to get rid of pathogenic bacterias which can otherwise set into garden food and contaminate people if not composted properly. You can't speed up the process except with chemicals. Second I already explained the perks of separating pee from poo, but here's all : - Pee is a totally balanced, performing, natural, instant, fertilizer. Which is a need and a huge advantage anyways when you have to grow food. - 75% of composting toilet smells comes from the pee, which is liquid and hard to dry, and it turns into amonia which is particularly smelly. - unseparated feces require more carbonate materials than poo to absorb moisture (250%), so separating feces is greener. In a quest for a sustainable living, especially off grid, you have to do your best at every stage. Any half solution brings full problems.

As an old Hippie from the 70's USA, the outhouse on my farm would fill with water and occasionally when dropping a load a little drop of that water would slash up and hit you right on the money spot! (Arm gripping shrieks of terror ensue) so I installed a sheet metal baffle of sorts so your poop would hit that first and deflect and minimalize any splashing (huge sigh of relief!) but our friends from the city when visiting complained about when they finished they would turn around and expect to be doing something to complete the transaction and were left unfulfilled~~~ sooo I installed a toilet handle to the side of the box with a chain that went down to the tin baffle, when you turned the handle it wiggled the metal a little, it actually did nothing but it solved the city people anxiety and gave me great amusement!

For people that were worried about the compost : my grandparents - who lived in a very similar village in the center of Portugal- had for more than 60 years a compost toilet ( only difference is the the deposit on the back was around 1.8 meters high...in fact that was a squared hole in the ground .with no plastics or anything else ..only the ground ,so the urine will slowly disappear in the soil...) and that was emptied once a year...and the humanure was mixed with the manure that comes from the corrals of other animals they had ( cows ,pigs, sheep) in a big pile ( around 4 metres x 4 meters x 1 meter)intercalate with bush layers,cut in the forest, in the middle of the courtyard...where it stays for around another year before it went directly onto the tillage to be mixed in the plowed earth and nobody got sick from it : my grandparents died at the age of 97&98 .wich are very common among the people who live there,and they had the same type of toilets in their houses.... even today there is no public sewage in the village...

Fun fact - the sitting was made of wood ( although the "shitting house or cabin..." walls are made of brick like a small house..) and it got a perfect circular hole where we sit when doing our business...and that hole has a perfect matching lid ,made of wood ( probably the same wood that comes out when they cut the circle...) , with a handle in the middle, so when we finish doing business we close the hole with the lid ( it seals the hole completely..) and no smell comes up at all....with that fancy plastic lid they had I'm not so sure....👃😀

I think honestly people nowadays are so brainwashed thinking sewage is the only way to go. After looking into compost toilets I actually think sewage is so much more unhygienic and just born out of necessity for cities/lack of space and people living in higher buildings. The earth deals so much better with our humanure. Besides, all the sewage 'water' needs to be dealt with and cleaned aswell and is dumped back into nature too.

I've built a few composting toilets before and I highly recommend raising the thing off of the soil as soon as possible (definitelly before the winter) as well as installing a urine seperator (we-pee). There's lot of reasons to seperate pee and poo, mainly smell and composting reasons. I can explain in more detail if that's interesting to you. The seats and the house look awesome though! Next job, build a compost bin nearby to empty into, or rather build 3, one for each yearly cycle. Also, ventilation to the cubicle and also to suck the stinky air and flies out of the loo part. And a door at the back to keep out the flies and wildlife who might want a poo dinner or make a nest. And also, make a separator to catch the pee so it doesn’t all mix together.

Like your videos allot. An I really like seeing you guys built every from scratch. I noticed that the diagonal beams on the door to the toilet is going from the wrong directions. They need to go opposite to support the weight of the door better and secure its not dropping. Think off the gallow when building doors 😉

A DRY composting toilet would work much better for you! The idea is to separate the urine from the solids. I have seen them in rural areas in México, they work very well! They build two separate deposits for the solids, and they use one toilet first. When it is full, they switch to the other one. (Two toilets but only one in use). The full one gets "sealed" for a number of months, and when the time is up (don't remember if it is 6 or 9 months), they open it up from the base at the back where they left a door, and they take out the compost, ready to use in the garden or orchard. The urine is diverted directly into a big bottle or bucket. Then they dilute it and use it directly in their garden. The great thing is that it doesn't stink. They use leaves, woodchips to cover their feces. Get a pee diverter with either another bucket to empty or a pipe that goes somewhere to drain. this will eliminate the odor problem. When the two mix it creates a stinky outhouse, but if kept separate, there will be almost no odor. This is how it's done in compost type toilets in skoolies, vans, and tiny homes.

Good basic design, however, pee shield of some type of plastic will help protect wood, paper bag for disposing of toilet paper (then burn bag) and add a skylight to ceiling with a clear polyvinyl sheet. Best wishes.

Story from my neighbor. Her father visited their cabin and decided to help with the composting loo. Not wanting to carry the stink through the house he decided to lift it out the window instead. So he opened the window and dangled the bucket out, but the ground was too far down, so he reached out a bit more, and a bit more... and fell headfirst into the bucket. My neighbor laughs so hard she can't breathe, the kids scream in pure poop horror and mom calmly locks herself in the kitchen. I'm with mom, she got her priorities straight. As for dad, I don't know how he got out of the bucket and got cleaned up again.

That is a lot of brand spanking new lumber for a toilet. Why not build something up against an existing building? Especially for when bad weather comes along. Water harvested from the roof could be used to wash buckets. Any forest duff can be used for carbon source; no need to purchase sawdust. When you do all of your scrub clearing, keep in mind to contain it and dry it down a bit.

The door is on backwards. The diagonals should be going up from the hinges in order to keep the shape and not sag. Over time it will sag the way it's currently supported by the diagonal braces

It's good you didn't make both loos at the same time, using the first as a prototype leaving room for improvement for the second one. Separate urine, no pathogens in urine so you can use it directly around your fruit trees, or just lead a line directly outside to a soak hole and plant nettles around which love urine. Well done for collecting this valuable resource.

Wanted to mention to you that in this kind of out-houses in Norway, it's normal to have a small heart-shaped opening on the upper portion of the door, and a picture of the Norwegian king on the wall inside. The heart I guess is for decoration and ventilation. The picture of the king I have no idea :)

The best system is 1 generation from food. Trees is fine for nuts and fruits, but no roots, no leaf. Use the humanure to grow flowers and all the clippings get composted and can be used on foods the second year.

You may want to consider drilling a hole in the container and connect a tube and allow the “liquids” to drain off into a separate hole. An option is to dig a 4 foot hole 4-5 inch diameter hole with an angle 3-4 ft pipe sticking out of the ground, for the boys to pee. Cover the top with some fine mosquito netting, push it into the pipe to create a small indentation. Somebody gets the job once every couple of days to sterilize the mosquito net and wash down the pvc pipe. This will alleviate the smell from the boys going where ever they like and will keep the smell down. It will also keep the bugs down.

Also confusing if you said two options or the second is explaining the first. The whole problem is the build was not as practical as it could have been. It's not anchored, direct ground contact in a lowered ground spot, the can is too close to have a proper diverter for both sexes, the back is not closed off, no aeration, no exhaust pipe out the top from the waste area, and no lighting for night/very early morning movements.

Hi everyone, our experiments here at C+O2 have found it best to let human manure sit with old leaves and fungal matter. The resulting compost is best used on trees, we use it on pecans and walnuts mostly. Vegie gardens like a more bacterial compost but there the danger of getting pathogens on leafy greens etc. if you put human manure around your vegies. Such an important topic.

Well done on finally getting a toilet. Honestly it surprised me that it took you this long to make it a priority. It would have been one of the first requirements in my mind, purely from a hygiene standpoint. 'Indiscriminate' pooping and peeing in various areas around the campsite has multiple negative consequences - and not just from a housekeeping perspective. I hope in the future you look at separating the liquids from the solids, as that will substantially reduce the effectiveness of the compost, and it also smells horrific.

No harsh criticism intended here but I thought I should point out that (especially if heat is used in the process of flattening the plastic in that big press) there is risk in recycling plastic. Recycled plastic I read even may be exceptionally toxic compared to newly manufactured plastics. I would encourage anyone reading this to look into VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and related subjects.

I’m back home we use to had a well for the toilet at first made well then put the toilet cabinet on top of well well it could be from 3 to 10 meters deep I suggestion you do that it long use .

I'm surprised it took you so long to build this, especially with all the rain you get, nothing worse than taking a dump in the rain, however based on my experience the bucket is way to big. You'll have to empty it reasonably often or it'll be unmanageable. I'm sure you'll get a lot more help now.

I actually prefer cork seats. More hygienic (antibacterial, anti-fungal) and so comfortable to sit on. It even feels warm in cold weather. And it's still easy to clean.

The solution you probably want but don't know yet is called a biodigestor. Look it up. It's an "automatic" system that besides fertiliser production also produces biogas that you can use to warm yourselves and/or to cook more delicious meals.

Great little shit house! I've been making 'humanure' for over 10 years. It is a wonderful product for the garden. I was at a mini film festival here in Alentejo and on one of the nights they showed you making recycled plastic and I recognized your face and voice! Very impressive, what you do.

Why not installing a diverter for #1 and #2 --- avoids the smell --- gives cmpost from #1 and fertilizer from #2 (diluted)

The size of the wood looks overdesigned to me. Anyway, the structure is not anchored in the ground. If you have high winds there it might move or worse. I thought that in the earlier videos, which I really enjoy, it was said that it can be cold there. There are cracks between the planks which might further open if the wood shrinks. So if you do business there in a cold winter night it might not be the most pleasant experience because of the draft. The seats are übergeil !!

I have seen from someone who has been using compost toilets for years where they suggest you put plastic on the inside of the front of the toilet as the urine rots the wood very quickly. It’s either on KZbin channel ‘bushradical’ or ‘girl in the woods’, husband and wife channels.
