An early happy new year to everyone! If you're interested in any of these then be sure to check the links in the video description for more info. If you have the financial means to do so, then I would highly recommend supporting Stef's SGDK Patreon (even if for just the price of a coffee per month), as pretty much all these games are being created using his superb development kit and he's generous enough not to demand any royalties, even for commercial games! @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials11 ай бұрын
I think an emulation console with a cartridge slot, cd slot and internet connection would be a good idea. They could then sell online and physical editions, not only of their console games, but of arcade games too! Even very cheap computers are capable of emulating up to Dreamcast/Model 3 now, so we should be getting close to the ideal $99 price point. Unlike the mini consoles, they could then continue to make money from game sales too!

@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials Seeing that Atari entered the aftermarket with their 2600+, perhaps SEGA and M2 should jump on that bandwagon while they can. Maybe they could go above and beyond with new custom console shells (Green Hill checker pattern and Columns jewels), updated box/cart labels, manuals (Ex: Streets of Rage 2 or Phantasy Star 2 with the Japanese cover art and colored manuals) with an option for legacy versions ("American-ized" art with grayscale manuals), and the return of Mega Games multicarts.

Why shouldn't use them? MD/Genesis doesn't just have a chip for FM synthesis, it also has an old Texas Instruments SN for compatibility with Master System, through which it can produce digital samples very well with a old and well-known trick, plus it has its own processor for sound control, albeit only a Z80.

You really have to admire the outstanding accomplishments that are these projects. Demakes and impressive original games wouldn't be possible without bold and skilled developers who sometimes manage to push a retro system further than the best looking official game did. And the people who tinker with the console and create the tools that make homebrewing possible, they are often unsung heroes. I've always said mod and fan game creators are one of the best things about gaming. I've been keeping an eye at the evolving Sega Saturn scene. Once again developers are showing how amazing fandoms can be by actually working on that system too, they've tried to make the Saturn Sonic game Sega itself couldn't. Sadly most of attempts don't get off the ground, as to be expected. If anyone manages to create a good 3D Sonic it will be among the most impressive Sonic related homebrew projects. I'd like to know if it would be possible to demake Sonic Adventure on the Saturn.

But really Xeno Crisis. A game made by (previously) retired professionals. It made money. Bitmap Bureau made it look easy. But they used to make SMD games.
@fabioriato11 ай бұрын
The 68k processor helps in that matter. A lot of systems used it back in the day, so it's been studied/programmed for by many people over the years, and for all I know it's also friendly for C programming. That leads to the SGDK development kit that most devs are using nowadays. Having a modern, dedicated devkit is HUGE. And people aren't wrong when they say the MD was the superior machine compared to its peers (NeoGeo notwithstanding, as it was essentially an arcade board turned console) in what it could do by itself. The PC Engine was roughly an 8-bit system with 16-bit graphics, and the SNES' architecture was made to be reliant on external hardware (the many games with chips) after they had successfully applied that for the latter NES games. I believe we're finally starting to scratch the surface of the Mega Drive's true potential now, and I wonder what the console would be able to do had it not been "held back" by retrocompatibility with the SMS in its inception.
@iwanttocomplain11 ай бұрын
@deansatan9573this video has 5 SNES homebrews in it, 48 NES games (almost all Mega Man clones), 21 Genesis games, 51 Game Boy and GBC games. So NES and GB games dominate the video which use the 6502 system archetecture. It's the 6502 architecture, not the cpu clock speed is the bottleneck. I forgot specifically the issue with bottlenecks but it's actually related to how 6502 systems handle memory transfers (awkwardly). The NES dev scene seems quite strong despite this issue with 6502. But people have been homebrewing on 6502 machines for a long time, they are just more likely to be C64 and NES games. So if you are experienced with the 6502, you should be able to get good results. I feel the majority of NES games are hacks of Zelda and Super Mario Bros, so that's low hanging fruit and not really trying very hard at programming. I feel the Nintendo homebrew scene is more about adding levels and difficulty to already beloved franchises. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3KqfniQq7pkasksi=ehmRpjC8EuALXJOa

Plenty of us out here know how to properly program the 65816 to go fast, but we're sticking with the Apple IIgs and Foenix F256/F256 Jr for now.
@paul1979uk200011 ай бұрын
@deansatan9573 Yeah, it does seem the SNES doesn't get much love compared to the Amiga, Mega Drive and C64. The problem for the SNES is its architecture, which isn't the easiest to program for, whereas the Amiga and Mega Drive share many similarities that can make many cross-platform tools work well for the two and also why many games are being ported to the two machines. As for the C64, it's an 8-biy platform so the amount of work needed is much smaller and games tend to be smaller in scope for that and probably why we don't see that many for 32-bit platforms, the workload would go up a lot unless it's a simply game.

A lot of 'em. Shoot 'em ups are going to be well represented on the Mega Drive in the coming years it seems, with Earthion, Lufthoheit, ZPF and Irena Genesis Metal Fury already looking and sounding very promising. Others i'm looking forward to are Castlevania: SoTN, Daemon Claw, , Planet B and BioEvil. Then there's Chords, which seems like a Snatcher kinda game for cartridge and could be interesting. Kai Magazine seems to be coming up strong with Life on Earth and The Secret of the Four Winds. Then there's ColocoDX, which reminds me of an old Mega Drive home brew demo called ResQ and was a fun little demo. Real Bout Fatal Fury Special would be very nice, but it does sound rough around the edges. Manifold looks impressive, even windowed like that, but some of the color choices are a bit weird in some places. All the others could become interesting as well. Overall, the new year could be one of the best for MD home brews yet! Oh and, what happened to the Crypt of Dracula game that was in development some years ago? Have a great new year Pigsy!

All of these games look amazing, but I'm very interested in Earthion, Daemon Claw, Chords, Sacred Line II, Super Power Kick, Phantom Gear, and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. If the last one is even 95% accurate to the Neo-Geo version by the time it's finished it will show that a lot of the ports of the past were limited by time, budget, tooling, and knowledge. Even the PSX port had missing animations and stuff like that so if the Genesis version is more accurate that would be awesome.

There won't be any sprite flicker as long as you don't put more than 20 sprites or 320 pixels worth of sprites on a single scanline.

It's not just the Mega Drive/Genesis scene, but really all of them. It's awesome if you're into such things. For example, my team is making a new Neo-Geo game. And there are at least three other Neo-Geo titles that are in the works that I am aware of coming out possibly this year. Considering there was almost nothing for many years and now all of a sudden we are amid a resurgence of new games for old consoles is an amazing time to be alive IMO.

Im aware that developing for the Genesis is easier than on the snes & more beginner friendly than ever before with all the tool assists available now for it online but it's still crazy to me that there's 32 freaking titles/ports in the works for the Genesis & I cant even think of 1 title thats being ported/made to the snes. What exactly is holding the snes back this hard?
@protocetid11 ай бұрын
Don't listen to the other guy, he apparently never grew out of the having the kind of arguments you saw in schoolyards during the 16-bit era. He's been spamming a single "SNES bad post" throughout the comments, changing it a little each time. This one is particularly blatant with its bias. The SNES was able to pull off Sonic 1 with its supposedly impossible on Nintendo speed, admittedly it did it with at a lower resolution. Surely the SNES would benefit from an advanced SDK and higher cartridge space the same way Sega's console has. And even the SNES is weaker that doesn't mean it deserves zero love, people are making games for 8-bit systems so power isn't everything. I say we should see what the SNES is capable of. If you like old consoles getting revived consider donating money to people who research and make tools for these old beasts, without SGDK (at least some of) these games wouldn't be possible. The people who want to make the same for SNES are likely short on volunteers, funds and other resources.
@zabustifu11 ай бұрын
The SNES may have a CPU that is weaker or harder to program for than the Genesis one, but that cannot be the only reason, because there are many NES games being developed, and I don't think anyone would like to argue that the NES CPU is better than the one of the SNES. It's mostly just a tooling issue. There would not be so many Genesis games in development without the SGDK, and a single person made that happen. The SNES needs its own Stef and its own SGDK.
@zabustifu11 ай бұрын
@@Troll_On_KZbin I'm a developer too, so what I said above was also said by a developer. Also, JavaScript is completely irrelevant here, and it's a language, not a tool.
@zabustifu11 ай бұрын
@@Troll_On_KZbin Saying that hardware / a console does not hold up to a language makes no sense. You're comparing apples with oranges. That's like saying the color red does not hold up to the triangle shape. It shows you have no idea what you're talking about. If you're going to insist using JavaScript as some kind of benchmark or reference, then be aware that JavaScript or other modern languages cannot be used to develop for the Mega Drive / Genesis either.
@zabustifu11 ай бұрын
@@Troll_On_KZbin Right. I guess the NES holds up to modern programming languages such as JavaScript then, as many games are being developed for it. 👍

Hey there, just wanted to say that your videos actually were a huge help for me developing and releasing my first Sega Genesis game. I never actually thought I'd be doing that honestly, and before a month ago I actually had never worked with C programming before. What a roller-coaster it was, but it was well worth it! I'm still very much an amateur, LOL. But it was still very gratifying to be able to make a game for my favorite 16-bit console.

There's "Affinity Sorrow" , a JRPG developed by Second Dimension. They're using their own custom development engine . It's not 100% certain, but there's the possibility it will be completed by the end of 2024

we are no longer limited by storage capacity as it was the case for cartridge based video consoles back in the 90s . we can now make video games on snes , sega genesis that require the use of a large amount of data and store them on sd card (there are adapters)

Thanks a lot for all the work you've done this year ! 2024 is going to be the a new Genesis era ! Lufthonheit is clearly the most technically impressive game of the list (considering Starfox will not go much further probably). I'm very happy to see CITY CONNECTION coming to the MD, one of my fav arcade games :)
@jc_dogen11 ай бұрын
luftonheit is awesome but I'm not sure a sprite multiplexer and some scaling is necessarily more impressive than an optimized 3d engine. a lot needs to go into those since the genesis is a tilemap system with a slow cpu and limited dma bandwidth. manifold supports sprite scaling as well as texture transparency and variable height sectors making it more like doom than wolfenstein. and star fox is completely nuts. gasega's been working on that on and off for probably close to 10 years.
@format_c599311 ай бұрын
That being said luftonheit is not only about multiplexing. The big technical challenge i see there is how to handle the collisions of so many sprites, even by using
